A compiled set of in situ data is important to evaluate the quality of ocean-colour satellite-data records. Here we describe the data compiled for the validation of the ocean-colour products from the ESA Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative (OC-CCI). The data were acquired from several sources (MOBY, BOUSSOLE, AERONET-OC, SeaBASS, NOMAD, MERMAID, AMT, ICES, HOT, GeP&CO), span between 1997 and 2012, and have a global distribution. Observations of the following variables were compiled: spectral remote-sensing reflectances, concentrations of chlorophyll a, spectral inherent optical properties and spectral diffuse attenuation coefficients. A simple empirical band-ratio algorithm to assess suspended particulate matter from remote sensing over coastal and inland waters of Vietnam: application to the VNREDSat-1/NAOMI sensor ArchiMer

VNREDSat-1 is the first Vietnamese satellite enabling the survey of environmental parameters such as vegetation and water coverages, or surface water quality at medium spatial resolution (from 2.5 to 10 meters depending on the considered channel). The NAOMI sensor on board VNREDSat-1 has the required spectral bands to assess the suspended particulate matter concentration, SPM. Increasing our knowledge on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) spatio-temporal distribution in the coastal ocean represents a crucial challenge for better understanding the role of these ecosystems in the global oceanic carbon cycle. The assessment of DOC concentration from the absorption properties of the colored part of the dissolved organic matter (a(cdom)) was investigated from an extensive data set covering a variety of coastal environments. Our results confirmed that variation in the acdom(412) to DOC ratio (a*(cdom)(412)) can be depicted from the CDOM spectral slope in the UV domain (S275-295). Remote sensing of suspended particulate matter, SPM, from space has long been used to assess its spatio-temporal variability in various coastal areas. The associated algorithms were generally site specific or developed over a relatively narrow range of concentration, which make them inappropriate for global applications (or at least over broad SPM range). The impact of the inherent optical properties (IOP) variability on the chlorophyll, Chl, retrieval from ocean color remote sensing algorithms is analyzed from an in situ data set covering a large dynamic range. The effect of the variability of the specific phytoplankton absorption coefficient, a(phy)/Chl, specific particulate backscattering coefficient, b(bp)/Chl, and colored detrital matter absorption to non-water absorption ratio, a(cdm)/a(nw), on the performance of standard operational algorithms is examined. GlobCoast, a new dataset for coastal water OCR ArchiMer

In the frame of GlobCoast project (11/2012-11/2015), funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR), a completely new dataset covering the global coastal waters has been processed. For MERIS period (2002-2012), SPM, Chlorophyl, acdom, DOC, Kd, anw and bbp, are now available at global scale at 1 km resolution. Monthly climatologies (with variation coefficient), eight days and monthly means are available. Results of advanced time series analysis from census-X11 method (trend, seasonal and irregular contribution) are also available. The data, projected on a sinusoidal equal-area grid, have been filtered to only keep the coastal waters. Even with filtering each image has a potential of 64 millions of pixels. Hyperspectral and multispectral ocean color inversions to detect Phaeocystis globosa blooms in coastal waters ArchiMer

Identification of phytoplankton groups from space is essential to map and monitor algal blooms in coastal waters, but remains a challenge due to the presence of suspended sediments and dissolved organic matter which interfere with phytoplankton signal. On the basis of field measurements of remote sensing reflectance (Rrs(λ)), bio-optical parameters, and phytoplankton cells enumerations, we assess the feasibility of using multispectral and hyperspectral approaches for detecting spring blooms of Phaeocystis globosa (P. globosa). Investigation of the optical backscattering to scattering ratio of marine particles in relation to their biogeochemical composition in the eastern English Channel and southern North Sea ArchiMer

The variability of the backscattering to scattering ratio of marine particles, bbp: bp, is examined from in situ measurements performed during the spring and early summer of 2004 in the eastern English Channel and southern North Sea. This area is characterized by a quasi-permanent background of mineral matter from direct inputs, or resuspension effects, and by relatively intense spring phytoplankton blooms (mainly diatoms and the prymnesiophyte Phaeocystis globosa). The b(bp): b(p) surface values range between 0.0024 and 0.0417, with a mean value of 0.0138 +/- 0.0083. Optical proxy for particulate organic nitrogen from BGC-Argo floats ArchiMer

Using biogeochemical-Argo float measurements, we propose, for the first time, an optical proxy for particulate organic nitrogen concentration (PON) in the Western Tropical South Pacific, an area influenced by dinitrogen (N2) fixation. Our results show a significant relationship between the backscattering coefficient at 700 nm (bbp) and PON, especially when the latter is measured using the wet oxidation method (R2=0.87). bbp may be used to estimate PON concentrations (PONopt) between 0.02 and 0.95 ìM, allowing for unprecedented monitoring using autonomous profiling floats.
