Between July 1997 and March 1999 ants of soil and litter were taken evey three months with core samplers (21 cm ø) in a primary rain fores, a secondary forest and two different systems of polycultures in central Amazonia (Manaus-AM-Brasil) and extracted in Berlese funnels. The collected ats were classified to generic level. Most frequent in all areas were ants of the genera Solenopsis (subfam. Myrmicinae) and Hypoponera (subfam. Ponerinae). the predatory species of Hypoponera represented the biggest part of ant biomass in all areas (20% - 33%), whereas the very abundant mostrly tiny species (<2 mm) of Solenopsis made up only 1,4% - 3,9% of the ant biomass. The biology of these species tiny species is poorly known.

Organic matter in termite mounds of an Amazonian rain forest. Repositório Alice
AMELUNG, W.; MARTIUS, C.; GARCIA, M. V.; KUEPER, U.; ULBRICH, D.; ZECH, W..
This study investigates how termites alter the organic matter in rain forests near Manaus, Brazil. Samples were collected from the outer and inner parts of typical termite nests of Nasutitermes, Termes, Embiratermes, Cornitermes, Anoplotermes, and Constrictotermes genera, as well as from the surrounding topsoil (0cm-10cm) and potential wooden food. The termite nests were signficant sinks for organic matter and its associated nutrients. The organic C contents ranged between 100g kg-1 and 500g kg-1 in the nests, compared to 17g kg-1 to 42g kg-1 in the surrounding topsoils. As lignin contents of the mounds were higher than in wood, lignin may be accumulated in preference to other organic compounds. This findings also sugests that the interior part of the...

Origin and Alteration of Organic Matter in Termite Mounds from Different Feeding Guilds of the Amazon Rainforests. Repositório Alice
SIEBERS, N.; MARTIUS, C.; ECKHARDT, K. U.; GARCIA, M. V. B.; LEINWEBER, P.; AMELUNG, W..
The impact of termites on nutrient cycling and tropical soil formation depends on their feeding habits and related material transformation. The identification of food sources, however, is difficult, because they are variable and changed by termite activity and nest construction. Here, we related the sources and alteration of organic matter in nests from seven different termite genera and feeding habits in the Terra Firme rainforests to the properties of potential food sources soil, wood, and microepiphytes.

Soil fauna and litter decomposition in primary and secondary forests and a polyculture system in Amazonia - study design and methodology. Repositório Alice
BECK, L.; HOFER, H.; MARTIUS, C.; GARCIA, M. B.; FRANKLIN, E.; ROMBKE, J..
A comparative study of litter quantity and qulity, decompositon rates, and the abundance, biomass, and respiration of soil-inhabiting microbes, arthropods and oligochaetes has been started in 1997. The three study sites are a primary forest, a 13-year old secondary forest and polyculture plantation system consisting of four commercially used tree species planted in rows between adventitious vegetation. The aim is to evaluate the specific contribution of the soil microflora and of the different functional soil fauna groups to the decomposition of organic matter and the resulting nutrient supply to the plants. A general description of the study design of the project is given and some methodological aspects are discussed. Methods that are standard in soil...
