The KCNJ11 (potassium inwardly-rectifying channel, subfamily J, member 11) gene is located in BTA15, near a quantitative trait loci for meat tenderness. In this study, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were described in KCNJ11 and associated with Warner ? Bratzler shear force (WBSF) at different aging times: 1 d after slaughter (WBSF0), after 7 d (WBSF7) and 14 d (WBSF14) of aging. Fourteen steers of Nelore breed, characterized as extreme for the distribution of WBSF0 in a half-sib population of 500 progenies from 32 sires, were selected for sequencing. |

Backfat thickness (BFT) and ribeye area (REA) are important production traits but, because they are measured late in the animal's life, they have not been efficiently included in breeding programs. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) mapped to the leptin, PPARGC1A, PSMC1, CRH, and FABP4 genes, which influence BFT and REA in Canchim cattle, a composite beef breed (5/8 Charolais + 3/8 Zebu). BFT and REA phenotypic records were obtained by ultrasound measurements from 18-month-old animals. All SNP markers were genotyped by restriction fragment length polymorphism-polymerase chain reaction. Restricted maximum likelihood analysis revealed that the non-synonymous SNP located in exon 2 of the FABP4 gene has an... |

Background: Beef cattle breeding programs in Brazil have placed greater emphasis on the genomic study of reproductive traits of males and females due to their economic importance. In this study, genome-wide associations were assessed for scrotal circumference at 210 d of age, scrotal circumference at 420 d of age, age at first calving, and age at second calving, in Canchim beef cattle. Data quality control was conducted resulting in 672,778 SNPs and 392 animals. Results: Associated SNPs were observed for scrotal circumference at 420 d of age (435 SNPs), followed by scrotal circumference at 210 d of age (12 SNPs), age at first calving (six SNPs), and age at second calving (four SNPs). We investigated whether significant SNPs were within genic or surrounding... |

Correlation between genetic parameters and factors such as backfat thickness (BFT), rib eye area (REA), and body weight (BW) were estimated for Canchim beef cattle raised in natural pastures of Brazil. Data from 1648 animals were analyzed using multi-trait (BFT, REA, and BW) animal models by the Bayesian approach. This model included the effects of contemporary group, age, and individual heterozygosity as covariates. In addition, direct additive genetic and random residual effects were also analyzed. Heritability estimated for BFT (0.16), REA (0.50), and BW (0.44) indicated their potential for genetic improvements and response to selection processes. Furthermore, genetic correlations between BW and the remaining traits were high (P > 0.50), suggesting... |

Abstract. Studies are being conducted on the applicability of genomic data to improve the accuracy of the selection process in livestock, and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) provide valuable information to enhance the understanding on the genetics of complex traits. The aim of this study was to identify genomic regions and genes that play roles in birth weight (BW), weaning weight adjusted for 210 days of age (WW), and long-yearling weight adjusted for 420 days of age (LYW) in Canchim cattle. GWAS were performed by means of the Generalized Quasi-Likelihood Score (GQLS) method using genotypes from the BovineHD BeadChip and estimated breeding values for BW, WW, and LYW. Data consisted of 285 animals from the Canchim breed and 114 from the MA genetic... |

Background: Meat quality involves many traits, such as marbling, tenderness, juiciness, and backfat thickness, all of which require attention from livestock producers. Backfat thickness improvement by means of traditional selection techniques in Canchim beef cattle has been challenging due to its low heritability, and it is measured late in an animal?s life. Therefore, the implementation of new methodologies for identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) linked to backfat thickness are an important strategy for genetic improvement of carcass and meat quality. Results: The set of SNPs identified by the random forest approach explained as much as 50% of the deregressed estimated breeding value (dEBV) variance associated with backfat thickness,... |

Genome-wide association studies provide valuable information for understanding the genetic control of complex traits in livestock. The goal of this study was to investigate the association of the BovineHD BeadChip SNP genotypes with estimated breeding values for long-yearling scrotal circumference adjusted to 420 days (SC420) in Canchim beef cattle. A total 435 SNPs were significantly associated with SC420 (10% chromosome-wise FDR), of which 30 were located in genes on chromosomes 5, 13, and 14, including HEY1, PLCG1, PAG1, ZFHX4, PEX2, FABP5, FABP12, MED30, and TRHR genes. These genes play a role in biological processes related to reproduction, fat deposition, and hormonal systems development. Future studies targeting these regions and genes could provide... |

Genomic structural variation, in the form of large-scale insertions and deletions, as well as inversions and translocations, are referred to as copy number variations (CNVs). Compared to single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), CNVs have potentially greater effects on gene structure, dosage and regulation, being an important source of phenotypic variation. In humans, CNVs are widespread in the genome and have been shown to be associated with complex traits. In livestock species, the characterization of this genetic variation is an important step toward linking genes or genomic regions with phenotypic traits of economic importance. Studies in cattle have revealed some CNVs associated with differences in host parasite resistance and breed-specific differences... |

Abstract. Background: The development of linkage disequilibrium (LD) maps and the characterization of haplotype block structure at the population level are useful parameters for guiding genome wide association (GWA) studies, and for understanding the nature of non-linear association between phenotypes and genes. The elucidation of haplotype block structure can reduce the information of several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) into the information of a haplotype block, reducing the number of SNPs in a coherent way for consideration in GWA and genomic selection studies. Results: The maximum average LD, measured by r2 varied between 0.33 to 0.40 at a distance of < 2.5 kb, and the minimum average values of r2 varied between 0.05 to 0.07 at distances... |
