Résumé:A partir d’un article accepté pour publication, ce document reporte les résultats d’une étude quia comparé la capacité à échantillonner les communautés de poissons récifaux, aux mêmes endroits, en utilisant deux techniques : le comptage en plongée en point fixe (UVC) et la station vidéo rotative (STAVIRO). Les observations UVC et STAVIRO ont été effectuées sur les mêmes 26 points de la pente récifale d’un récif intermédiaire et d’un récif barrière. Les systèmes STAVIRO étaient toujours déployés 30 min à 1 heure après les UVC et placées exactement au même endroit. Estimating diversity and abundance of fish species is fundamental for understanding community structure and dynamics of coral reefs. When designing a sampling protocol, one crucial step is the choice of the most suitable sampling technique which is a compromise between the questions addressed, the available means and the precision required. The objective of this study is to compare the ability to sample reef fish communities at the same locations using two techniques based on the same stationary point count method: one using Underwater Visual Census (UVC) and the other rotating video (STAVIRO). Diurnal temporal patterns of the diversity and the abundance of reef fishes in a branching coral patch in New Caledonia ArchiMer

Small-scale spatial and temporal variability in animal abundance is an intrinsic characteristic of marine ecosystems but remains largely unknown for most animals, including coral reef fishes. In this study, we used a remote autonomous unbaited video system and recorded reef fish assemblages during daylight hours, 10 times a day for 34 consecutive days in a branching coral patch of the lagoon of New Caledonia. In total, 50 031 fish observations belonging to 114 taxa, 66 genera and 31 families were recorded in 256 recorded videos. Carnivores and herbivore-detritus feeders dominated the trophic structure. This work deals with fish communities and associated habitats, in the context of New Caledonian coral reef ecosystems. It was conducted within the AMBIO project. The study relies on remote unbaited underwater video observations, using the STAVIRO rotating technique. The study takes place in the Bourail area, an area (Western Coastal Area) part of the World Heritage site “New Caledonian lagoons”. It encompasses two Marine Protected Areas, Poé and the Ile Verte. A significant challenge of reef fish monitoring is to determine the influence of temporal factors on fish counts.
