Azadinium spinosum (Elbrächter and Tillmann), a small marine dinoflagellate, has been recently described as a de novo producer of azaspiracid-1 and -2 (AZA1 and -2) diarrhoeic toxins. A culture of A. spinosum was established in our laboratory and optimised for pilot-scale production of this organism, to evaluate and understand AZA1 and -2 accumulation and biotransformation in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) fed with A. spinosum. Adult mussels were continuously exposed to A. spinosum over 1 week in 160 L cylindrical conical tanks. Three different diets were tested for contamination: 5000, 10 000 cells mL−1 of A. spinosum and a mixture of 5000 cells mL−1 of A. spinosum with 5000 cells mL−1 of Isochrysis aff. galbana (T-Iso, CCAP 927/14). During the subsequent... |

A bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense was observed for the first time in Thau iagoon between November and December 1998. Maximum cell concentrations detected in shellfish farming areas (85 000 Cells/1) were high enough to make mussels and clams unsuitable for human consumption (max. 850 ug. STX eq.100 g'1) while toxic levels in oysters did not exceed, or even reach, the international public health threshold established for PSP toxins. This event, new to French Mediterranean waters, was investigated by both local and national veterinary services and by the Ifremer teams involved in the National Monitoring Network for Phytoplankton and Phycotoxines (Réphy). The chronological and operational description of the event was compared with data... |

The objective of the study was to pinpoint a possible effect of the food on the decontamination speed up of mussels containing DTX toxins. Studying the possible impact of food on the detoxification rate consists in i) following the toxin content over time for both feeding conditions and ii) checking the physiological state of the animals. For this purpose, an experimental protocol has been designed to describe the kinetics and to compare the detoxification rate in fed and non fed toxic mussels. The experimental disposal was available in an experimental oyster farm where the water and food supply qualities were controlled. The food supply consisted in a monospecific culture of the diatom Skeletonema costatum which is widely used in the shellfish... |

The objective of this study was to identify a possible effect of food on the acceleration of decontamination in blue mussels, Mytilus edulis, containing diarrhetic toxins belonging to the okadaic acid (OA) structural group. An experimental protocol was designed to describe and compare the decontamination kinetics and detoxification rates of naturally OA-contaminated mussels that had either received or not received food for three weeks. The protocol was applied in two trials (in June 2006 and June 2007, called Ker06 and Ker07), conducted one year apart on samples of mussels collected in the same area, at the same season. Okadaic acid (OA), the main lipophilic toxin produced by the toxic alga Dinophysis acuminata, was analysed over the course of the... |

Two studies of depuration, one in laboratory conditions and the other one in an oyster's pond were performed using 2 sets of contaminated mussels with diarrhetic toxins at a high and a low level (3 and 1 M.U.). Depuration kinetics were followed both by the adult mouse test and okadaïc acid analysis. Results are - in the pond, high toxic mussels need about 20 days to become eatable (toxicity level : 0.5 M.U.g-1 digestive glands), -this time decreases when the initial toxicity is low but it increases when mussels are underfed, - a good correlation is observed between the total toxicity and okadaïc acid concentration. |

It has been demonstrated that polymeric resins can be used as receiving phase in passive samplers designed for the detection of lipophilic marine toxins at sea and was referred to as solid phase adsorption toxin tracking (SPATT). The present study describes the uptake and desorption behaviour of the lipophilic marine toxins okadaic acid (OA) and dinophysistoxin-1 (DTX1) from Prorocentrum lima cultures by five styrene-divinylbenzene based polymeric resins Sepabeads (R) SP850, Sepabeads (R) SP825L, Amberlite (R) XAD4, Dowex (R) Optipore (R) L-493 and Diaion (R) HP-20. All resins accumulated OA and DTX1 from the P. lima culture with differences in adsorption rate and equilibrium rate. Following statistical evaluation, HP-20, SP850 and SP825L demonstrated... |

As early as 1999, the EUROHAB initiative reported an urgent need for research on phycotoxin accumulation, detoxification and biotransformation rates in exploited shellfish species. It also strongly recommended a second objective of developing commercial systems for the cleansing of shellfish once contaminated with toxin. As a result, EU Framework Programs and regional programs funded a series of R & D projects aiming to consolidate our understanding of contamination/detoxification pathways, together with the development of industrial scale detoxification processes and mechanisms. These studies attempted to accelerate the depuration process, for DSP in blue mussels, PSP in Pacific oysters and Manila clams, and ASP in King Scallops. Bulk culture... |
