Special problems are presented when analysing supply chains because of the complexity of the relationships. In addressing this problem for a vegetable supply chain in Mindanao a pluralistic methodology is used. A soft systems framework was used to structure and analyse the problem and identify relevant systems. Issues we are addressing are efficiencies along the supply chain (including input supply issues, output marketing, quality control and transport) and relationships between the various participants in the supply chain. Qualitative and quantitative data collection methods have been used. Analysis is being conducted with qualitative data analysis techniques, LP farm household models, transaction cost economics, gap analysis, factor analysis and... |

In the past agriculture has relied on the application of "end-of-pipe" or preventative solutions to environmental problems brought on by the management and production processes that it has adopted. This has led to outcomes and approaches that are single media and process or facility focused. The recent trends in the broader industrial sector have been towards the adoption of eco-efficiency approaches to environmental concerns that have a strong business focus on sustainability, look at multiple media and adopt a lifecycle and systems approach. |

Barriers to trade between countries have reduced through the general Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The nature of trade between businesses is also changing dramatically through developments in Information Technology but also due to adoption of quality assurance and new approaches to supply chain management. The impacts of this "New Economy" vary around the world. This paper considers the implications of these developments for Australian farmers. Whilst these changes can be regarded as generally advantageous to Australian farmers, they may be disadvantaged in some areas because of the relatively small size of the Australian farming sector, its geographical dispersion, the advent of a range of new technologies... |

The Australian desert economy is a $90 billion dollar economy. However currently, there is a reliance on a few industry sectors in delivering its output. About 60% of the gross revenue of the desert comes from only three sectors - mining, manufacturing and agriculture. This can pose a risk in light of climate change, increasing interconnectedness of financial markets and the fact that the resources boom is unlikely to be an on-going phenomenon. How can desert economies mitigate risks associated with over-reliance on a few select sectors and ensure continued growth in the long run? This paper discusses the structure of the desert economy and strategies to mitigate the risks of overdependence on a few industries. Using a regional input-output model, the... |

Semi-arid and arid lands cover approximately two-thirds of Australia. These heartlands are the focus of a 7-year research project (Desert Knowledge Cooperative Research Centre - DK-CRC) that has the vision of developing a sustainable future through the development of thriving desert knowledge communities. The research aims to deliver: Sustainable livelihoods for desert people, based on new natural resource and service enterprise opportunities that are environmentally and socially appropriate. - More viable remote desert communities to support the presence of desert people, as a result of facilitating access to more attractive services that are delivered more efficiently. - Thriving desert knowledge communities that build self-sufficiency and minimise... |
