Alternativ kontrol af indvoldsorm hos svin Organic Eprints
Mejer, Helena; Roepstorff, Allan.

Alternatives to Synthetic Chemical Antiparasitic Drugs in Organic Livestock Farming in Europe Organic Eprints
Hoste, Hervé; Sotiraki, Smaragda; Mejer, Helena; Heckendorn, Felix; Maurer, Veronika; Thamsborg, Stig.
Gastrointestinal parasitism with helminths and protozoa remains a major threat in cattle and small ruminant production and has been “rediscovered” in pig and poultry production systems operating under organic farming rules because of the requirement to grant outdoor access to the animals. The control of these parasitic infections is a key issue for the economic viability of farms and for animal welfare. Control solutions aim at (i) providing the agronomical bases for parasite control through rational management of pastures; (ii) stimulating the host immune response through different means; (iii) exploring and evaluating the efficacy of new drugs (i.e., phytotherapy, homeopathy and nutraceuticals); and (iv) developing new concepts of application of chemical...

Ascaris suum infections in pigs born and raised on contaminated paddocks Organic Eprints
Mejer, Helena; Roepstorff, Allan.
The transmission of Ascaris suum was studied in outdoor reared pigs. From May to June, 2001 6 farrowing paddocks were naturally contaminated with A. suum using experimentally infected seeder pigs. Early July, 1 sow farrowed on each paddock. One piglet per litter was slaughtered every second week starting week 3 post partum (p.p.) for registration of liver white spots and recovery of A. suum from the lungs and the small intestine. The last pigs were slaughtered week 19 p.p. Faeces was examined for eggs and blood was analysed for A. suum specific antibodies. Weaning took place week 7 p.p. by removing the sow. Paddock infection levels were estimated by regular examination of soil samples and in late June and late November using parasite naïve tracer pigs....

Chicory roots improves the taste and odour of organic pork Organic Eprints
Roepstorff, Allan; Mejer, Helena; Thomsen, Lisbeth E.; Thamsborg, Stig M.; Byrne, Derek V.; Hansen, Laurits L.; Bach Knudsen, Knud Erik; Møller, Kristian.
The carbohydrate inulin is known to reduce the production of skatole in pigs. This is caused by inulin changing the intestinal flora, so that the bacteria that produce skatole are held in check. This change in intestinal flora also reduces the number of intestinal parasites in the pigs. However the high cost of inulin makes its use in pig feed impractical. Chicory root contains inulin and a series of other carbohydrates and secondary metabolites. Therefore we have examined whether chicory root can replace pure inulin and thereby reduce boar taint, improve the taste of pork and reduce the infection of pigs with pathogenic parasites and bacteria.

Cikorierødder forbedrer smag og lugt i økologisk svinekød Organic Eprints
Roepstorff, Allan; Mejer, Helena; Thomsen, Lisbeth E.; Thamsborg, Stig M.; Byrne, Derek V.; Hansen, Laurits L.; Bach Knudsen, Knud Erik; Møller, Kristian.

Cryptosporidium and Giardia in organic pig farms: a longitudinal study of seasonal- and age-related variation in species, genotypes and excretion levels Organic Eprints
Petersen, Heidi Huus; Jianmin, Wang; Katakam, Kiran Kumar; Mejer, Helena; Ståhl, Marie; Dalsgaard, Anders; Olsen, Annette; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Enemark, Heidi.
Although pigs are commonly infected with Cryptosporidium and Giardia duodenalis, and thus potential reservoirs of zoonotic species (or genotypes), little is known about age-related infection levels, seasonal differences and genetic variation in naturally infected pigs. Thus, to characterise seasonal and age-related variation in prevalence and intensity of infections at farm level, (oo)cyst shedding was monitored at quarterly intervals (September 2011 to June 2012) in piglets (n=152), young pigs (n=234), finishers (n=230) and sows (n=240) from three organic, Danish farms. (Oo)cysts were quantified by immunofluorescence microscopy; and representative Cryptosporidium (n=75) and Giardia (n=67) positive subsamples were characterized by amplification and partial...

Development and survival of Ascaris suum eggs in deep litter of pigs Organic Eprints
Katakam, Kiran Kumar; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Kyvsgaard, Niels Christian; Dalsgaard, Anders; Mejer, Helena.
Indoor transmission of Ascaris suum partly depends on the physico-chemical conditions in bedding material. Temperature,pH, aqueous ammonia, moisture, occurrence and development of A. suum eggs were therefore compared in different areas(resting, intermediate and latrine) of two deep litter pens on an organic farm in four seasons. There was some variation, but mean ammonia levels were generally very low (1·0–2·6mM) and pH levels were moderate (8·04–8·88) in all three areas. Relatively, resting areas were characterized by overall moderate moisture (36%) and moderately high temperature (35·7 °C)levels. The area contained few eggs (50 eggs g−1 DM) of which 17% were viable, and though only 4% were larvated and 0·7% appeared infective, it was more than in the...

Effect of disinfectants on viability of Ascaris suum and Ascaridia galli eggs Organic Eprints
Gautam, Susmita; Petkeviciute, Egle; Takeuchi-Storm, Nao; Thapa, Sundar; Mejer, Helena.
Ascaris suum and Ascaridia galli, the large round worm of pigs and poultry, respectively, persist even in intensive management systems, where a high level of hygiene is practiced. It is necessary to control these helminths to minimize production losses and improve animal welfare. Commercial disinfectants are commonly used to clean pens in conventional pig and poultry farms but their efficacy against the thick-shelled nematode eggs has not been sufficiently documented. However, it might be difficult to control these parasites because of their complex thick-shelled eggs, which can resist harsh environmental conditions. Commonly used disinfectants such as Virkon S®, FL-des GA® typically claim efficacy against viruses, bacteria and some fungi, but very few...

Effect of dried chicory roots on host immune responses against Oesophagostomum dentatum infections in pigs Organic Eprints
Andrasen, Annette; Sengupta, Mita Eva; Skovgaard, Kerstin; Jensen , Bent Borg; Thamsborg, Stig MIlan; Kringel, Helene; Petersen, Heidi Huus; Mejer, Helena.
It has been shown that carbohydrates that are resistant to digestion in the small intestine but fermentable in the caecum and colon (prebiotics) may be adverse to Oesophagostomum detatum establishment in pigs and have a severe negative effect on egg production. However, there is some evidence that O.dentatum may adapt to the presence of chicory in the feed over time, and is Thus very relevant to examine the long-term effect on the parasite.

Evaluation of soil microfungi as biological control agents against ascarid eggs Organic Eprints
Sundar, Thapa; Meyling, Nicolai V.; Katakam, Kiran Kumar; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Mejer, Helena.
Thick-shelled ascarid eggs have been reported to remain infective in the environment for several years, thus posing a prolonged risk of infection to animals and/or humans. The following in vitro study was therefore conducted to evaluate the negative impact of two species of naturally occuring soil microfungi (Pochonia chlamydosporia and Paecilomyces lilacinus), on the viability of Ascaridia galli, Toxocara canis and Ascaris suum eggs. Approximately 150 fresh eggs of individual ascarid species were embryonated on a 2% water agar in Petri dishes with or without a fungus (P. chlamydospria or P. lilacinus). On days 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 post experimental set up (p.s.), the viability of the eggs in each experimental group was evaluated (destructive...

Helminth parasites in pigs: challenges and current research highlights Organic Eprints
Roepstorff, Allan; Mejer, Helena; Nejsum, Peter; Thamsborg, Stig Milan.
Helminths in pigs have generally received little attention from veterinary parasitologists, despite Ascaris suum, Trichuris suis, and Oesophagostomum sp. being common worldwide. The present paper presents challenges and current research highlights connected with these parasites. In Danish swine herds, new indoor production systems may favour helminth transmission and growing knowledge on pasture survival and infectivity of A. suum and T. suis eggs indicates that they may constitute a serious threat to outdoor pig production. Furthermore, it is now evident that A. suum is zoonotic and the same may be true for T. suis. With these ‘new’ challenges and the economic impact of the infections, further research is warranted. Better understanding of...

Ikke-medicinsk kontrol af indvoldsorm i grise Organic Eprints
Mejer, Helena; Roepstorff, Allan.

Prior to a European prevalence survey of intestinal parasites of organic pig herds it was decided to introduce one common technique for faecal egg counts and to compare its execution at all involved laboratories to ensure data compatibility. It was clearly shown that avoid confounding variation it is extremely important not only to use identical techniques but also to implement the technique in exactly the same way.

This report reviews the available information on the welfare of pigs when maintained according to organic standards in Europe. It begins by overviewing the populations of organic pigs in different countries at the time of writing (2007), the organic standards which govern their management and the systems in which they are typically kept. It then reviews for each stage in the production cycle (sows, suckling piglets, weaned pigs and fattening pigs) the available literature on health and welfare problems which might be experienced by the animals and the hazards which might give rise to these problems. Finally the report reviews the methods current available for the measurement of pig health and welfare and the extent to which monitoring systems currently...
