In bird species that have a high movement capacity, dispersal may connect subpopulations over vast geographical regions, with important consequences for the design of conservation management strategies. Here we used a molecular approach to infer the patterns and rates of dispersal among eight Mediterranean subpopulations of the endangered Bonelli's Eagle, based on 245 individuals screened at 17 microsatellite loci. There was moderate genetic differentiation between subpopulations sampled in the western (Iberia and Morocco) and eastern (Cyprus) Mediterranean, whereas differentiation among subpopulations in the former region was weak to moderate and followed a pattern of isolation by distance. Within the western Mediterranean, the small, peripheral and... |

Marine macroalgae represent a valuable natural resource for bioactive phytochemicals with promising applications in therapeutics, although they remain largely under-exploited. In this work, the potential of two marine green macroalgae (Cladophora rupestris and Codium fragile) as a source of bioactive phenolic compounds was explored, and antioxidant, mineralogenic, and osteogenic activities were evaluated. For each species, a crude hydroalcoholic extract (CE) was prepared by solid/liquid extraction and fractionated by liquid/liquid purification into an ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) enriched in phenolic compounds and an aqueous fraction (AF). Antioxidant activity, assessed through radical scavenging activity and reducing power assay, was increased in EAF... |

Nowadays, PCR-based DNA markers allow the study of diversity and differentiation of marine organisms at different stages of their life cycle. Our study of European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) populations has aimed to describe their spatial and temporal dynamics. First, we analyzed adults sampled over the natural range of the species. An Atlantic/Mediterranean differentiation pattern was observed. Results were congruent between allozymes, microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA and support an isolation by distance model. High variability was observed in the breadth of diversity between populations using a mitochondrial marker, this highlights the small effective population sizes in some locations. A 10-fold quantitative difference was observed in Fst... |
