Maciel,Jonas Fernandes; Krawczak,Felipe da Silva; Oliveira,Caroline Sobotyk de; Moraes-Filho,Jonas; Labruna,Marcelo Bahia; Botton,Sônia de Avila; Vogel,Fernanda Silveira Flores; Sangioni,Luis Antonio.
The goal of this study was to investigate anti-Rickettsia spp. antibodies in sera of domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) of extensive breeding in Cerro Largo county, considered an endemic area for spotted fever in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Three hundred blood samples were collected and anti-Rickettsia spp. antibodies were evaluated by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) in the sera obtained. The occurrence of anti-Rickettsia spp. antibodies detected in this study was 1.33% (4/300), with endpoint titers ranging from 64 to 256 for Rickettsia rickettsiii, R. parkeri and/or R. bellii. The results suggest these domestic chickens do not participate as a reservoir and/or amplifying host in the epidemiology of spotted fever in that...

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to investigate exposure of Baixadeiro horses to Rickettsia spp. and to ticks infected by Rickettsia in the Baixada Maranhense (lowlands) micro-region, state of Maranhão. A total of 258 horses were tested for Rickettsia rickettsii, Rickettsia amblyommatis and Rickettsia bellii using the immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Overall, 58.91% (152/258) of the horses were seroreactive for at least one Rickettsia species, and 85.27% of the horses were infested with one or more species of tick, which were identified as Dermacentor nitens (93.63%), Amblyomma cajennense sensu stricto (4.55%) and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (1.82%). These ticks were subjected to DNA extraction and were tested using the polymerase chain reaction...

Serosurvey of Rickettsia spp. in small mammals from Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil Ciência Rural
Binder,Lina de Campos; Krawczak,Felipe da Silva; Sponchiado,Jonas; Melo,Geruza Leal; Moraes-Filho,Jonas; Bastos,Fernanda Aparecida Nieri; Cáceres,Nilton Carlos; Labruna,Marcelo Bahia.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate exposure of wild small mammals to spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae in Mato Grosso do Sul State, central-western Brazil. Serum samples of 68 small mammals were analyzed by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) against six Rickettsia species from Brazil. Overall, 37.5% (9/24) marsupials and 6.8% (3/44) small rodents were seroreactive to at least one of the Rickettsia species, with end point titres ranging from 64 to 512. These results suggested that wild small mammals were infected by SFG rickettsiae, and could participate in the ecology of rickettsiae in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.
