Absence of spatial genetic structure in common dentex (Dentex dentex Linnaeus, 1758) in the Mediterranean Sea as evidenced by nuclear and mitochondrial molecular markers 5
Viret, Alexiane; Tsaparis, Dimitris; Tsigenopoulos, Costas S.; Berrebi, Patrick; Sabatini, Andrea; Arculeo, Marco; Fassatoui, Chiheb; Magoulas, Antonios; Marengo, Michel; Morales-nin, Beatriz; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Durieux, Eric D.h..
The common dentex, Dentex dentex, is a fish species which inhabits marine environments in the Mediterranean and Northeast Atlantic regions. This is an important species from an ecological, economic and conservation perspective, however critical information on its population genetic structure is lacking. Most samples were obtained from the Mediterranean Sea (17 sites) with an emphasis around Corsica (5 sites), plus one Atlantic Ocean site. This provided an opportunity to examine genetic structuring at local and broader scales to provide science based data for the management of fishing stocks in the region. Two mitochondrial regions were examined (D-loop and COI) along with eight microsatellite loci. The COI data was combined with publicly available...

Black scabbardfish, Aphanopus carbo, in the northeast Atlantic: distribution and hypothetical migratory cycle 5
Farias, Ines; Morales-nin, Beatriz; Lorance, Pascal; Figueiredo, Ivone.
The biology, ecology, and dynamics of the deep-sea teleost black scabbardfish in the northeast Atlantic are reviewed. The black scabbardfish is a commercial bathypelagic species found in the NE Atlantic mostly from Iceland to the Canary Islands and Western Sahara, at depths from 800 to 1300 m. The spatial structure of its population is still uncertain, although the existence of one single stock that migrates around the NE Atlantic driven by feeding and reproduction is the most likely hypothesis consistent with available data. This review is based on data from commercial fisheries off the Faroe Islands, Hatton Bank, the west of the British Isles, and Portugal (mainland, Azores, and Madeira) and from Icelandic and Scottish scientific surveys collected...

Gadoids 5
Hussy, Karin; Morales-nin, Beatriz; Pineiro Alvarez, Carmen; De Pontual, Helene; Smith, Joanne; Mahe, Kelig; Krumme, Uwe; Songer, Sally; Walther, Yvonne; Rey, Javier.
This chapter was written during the Workshop on Age Validation of Gadoids (WKAVGS 2013) which was held 6–10 May 2013 at Imedea in Esporles, Mallorca. The terms of reference for the workshop were to: 1. Review information on age estimations, otolith exchanges, workshops, and validation works done so far on the following species: European hake, cod, pollock, saithe, haddock, whiting, and blue whiting; 2. Assemble and compare the results of different validation methods (i.e. marking and recapture, marking the calcified structure, marginal increment analysis, marginal analysis, modal progression analysis, length back-calculation, etc.); 3. Discuss and propose the most appropriate validation methods of age and growth pattern of calcified structures (CS), for...

Marine recreational fishing (MRF) is a high-participation activity with large economic value and social benefits globally, and it impacts on some fish stocks. Although reporting MRF catches is a European Union legislative requirement, estimates are only available for some countries. Here, data on numbers of fishers, participation rates, days fished, expenditures, and catches of two widely targeted species were synthesized to provide European estimates of MRF and placed in the global context. Uncertainty assessment was not possible due to incomplete knowledge of error distributions; instead, a semi-quantitative bias assessment was made. There were an estimated 8.7 million European recreational sea fishers corresponding to a participation rate of 1.6%. An...
