Biologia e ecologia de Anthodioctes moratoi Urban (Hymenoptera, Megachilidae, Anthidiini) em matas contínuas e fragmentos na Amazônia Central, Brasil Zoologia
Morato,Elder Ferreira.
Anthodioctes moratoi Urban, 1999 was described based on specimens collected in tlhe state of Amazonas during a study of the ecology of trap-nesting bees and wasps. Sampling was done between 1988 and 1990 north of Manaus, in areas of the "Forest Fragment Biological Dynamics Project". Wooden trap-nests were set in different heights inside continuous forests, forest fragments of different sizes, natural gaps inside continuous forest, and in cleared areas between forest fragments. A total of 61 nests were collected from which 33 males and 46 females emerged. The majority of nests was collected in continuous forests, at 15 m height, in holes 4.8 mm in diameter. No nest was collected in cleared areas. There was no correlation, neither between number of nests and...

Description of the immature instars of three species of Podium Fabricius (Hymenoptera, Sphecidae) from Brazil Zoologia
Buys,Sandor Christiano; Morato,Elder Ferreira; Garófalo,Carlos Alberto.
Immature instars of three species of the neotropical cockroach-hunting genus Podium Fabricius, 1804 are described. All larval instars and the cocoon of P. denticulatum Smith, 1856; the last instar and the cocoon of P. aureosericeum Kohl, 1902 and the last instar larva of P. fumigatum (Perty, 1833) were treated. The last larval instar of P. denticulatum is distinct from those of other species by lacking cephalic rugosity and spinning cocoons tapered in the posterior extremity. P. aureosericeum and P. fumigatum are unique in bearing small lamellae between mandibular teeth.

Efeitos da fragmentação florestal sobre vespas e abelhas solitárias na Amazônia Central. II. estratificação vertical Zoologia
Morato,Elder Ferreira.
The effects of forest fragmentation on the patterns of vertical abundance and richness of solitary wasp and bee communities was investigated near Manaus, Amazonas. Wasps and bees were trap-nested at 1,5, 8 and 15 m above the ground in continuous primary forestand isolated forest fragments. In general, the number of nests and species increased with height for both groups. In particular, bee species richness at 15 m was almost twice that at 1,5 mm. However, one species of Trypoxylon Latreille, 1796 (Sphecidae) consistently nested in the understorey. Thus, patterns of abundance and richness distributions indicated stratification. A contingency analysis showed that fragmentation altered stratification of nesting activity of the wasp community in fragments....

Fauna de euglossina (Hymenoptera: Apidae) da Amazônia sul-ocidental, Acre, Brasil Acta Amazonica
Storck-Tonon,Danielle; Morato,Elder Ferreira; Oliveira,Marcio Luiz.

Morato,Elder Ferreira.
This note reports tor the first time the presence of Aglae caerulea Lepeletier & Serville, 1825 in the State of Acre, Western Amazonia. Three male bees were recorded in the "Parque Nacional da Serra do Divisor" with traps baited with methyl cinnamate. A general description of the sampling sites is provided.

Orchid Bees of forest fragments in Southwestern Amazonia Biota Neotropica
Storck-Tonon,Danielle; Morato,Elder Ferreira; Melo,Antonio Willian Flores de; Oliveira,Marcio Luiz de.
Bees of the tribe Euglossini are known as orchid-bees. In general, areas with more vegetation cover have greater abundance and diversity of these bees. This study investigated the effects of forest fragmentation on assemblages of the euglossine bees in the region of Rio Branco municipality, State of Acre, and surrounding areas. Ten forest fragments with varying sizes were selected for the study and were classified as urban or rural. The bees were sampled between December 2005 and August 2006. A total of 3,675 bees in 36 species and 4 genera were collected. In general abundance and richness of bees did not differ statistically between urban and rural fragments. The index of edge in fragments was a predictor of richness and diversity of bees. The...

Partição de recursos florais de espécies de Sida Linnaeus e Malvastrum coromandelianum (Linnaeus) Garcke (Malvaceae) entre Cephalurgus anomalus Moure & Oliveira (Hymenoptera, Andrenidae, Panurginae) e Melissoptila cnecomala (Moure) (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Eucerini) Zoologia
Morato,Elder Ferreira; Campos,Lúcio Antônio de O..
The flowering pattern and the visiting bee species on Sida spp. and Malvastrum coromandelianum (L.) Garcke were studied in a restricted area at the campus of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. There were differences among plant species but not among individuals in relation to the flowering time along the day and the time at which the flowers were visited by bees. Melissoptila cnecomala (Moure, 1944) and Cephalurgus anomalus Moure & Oliveira, 1962 were the most frequent visitors. Both species foraged on flowers for nectar and pollen. C. anomalus visited mainly plants with anthesis in the morning and M. cnecomala plants with anthesis in the afternoon. This fact sugests that those species of bees may be showing contrasting...
