Enzymatic systems involved in D-limonene biooxidation BABT
Menéndez,Pilar; García,Carlos; Rodríguez,Paula; Moyna,Patrick; Heinzen,Horacio.
The biooxidation of limonene by an Aspergillus strain resulted in the production of perillyl alcohol and short chain fatty acids. Addition of ketoconazole, a known inhibitor of cytochrome P450 oxydase, eliminated the production of free acids, but did not affect biotransformation to perillyl alcohol.

Essential oil yield and composition of Lamiaceae species growing in southern Brazil BABT
Agostini,Fabiana; Santos,Ana Cristina Atti dos; Rossato,Marcelo; Pansera,Márcia Regina; Santos,Paula Luciana dos; Serafini,Luciana Atti; Molon,Rosângela; Moyna,Patrick.
The Lamiaceae family has been described to be rich in essential oil. The aim of the present work was to identify the native species of Rio Grande do Sul with potential use as the aromatic plants. Seven species of the family were collected in the different localities of the state. The essential oils were obtained by 1h hydrodistillation in a Clevenger apparatus. The constituents were identified by comparing their GC Kovats retention indices (RI), determined with reference to a homologous series of n-alkanes and by comparing their mass spectral fragmentation patterns with literature data. Cunila incisa and Mentha aquatica resulted in the higher esssential oil yields (1.94% v/w and 0.93% v/w, respectively. The composition of M. aquatica was 80% methone, with...

Essential oils of camphor tree (cinnamomum camphora nees & eberm) cultivated in Southern Brazil BABT
Frizzo,Caren D.; Santos,Ana C.; Paroul,Natalia; Serafini,Luciana A.; Dellacassa,Eduardo; Lorenzo,Daniel; Moyna,Patrick.
The essential oils of two varieties of Camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora Nees & Eberm, Lauraceae), known as Hon-Sho and Ho-Sho cultivated in experimental stands in Southern Brazil were studied. The essential oils were obtained from the leaves and twigs of young plants by hydrodistillation. The identification of the components was performed using GC, GC/MS and retention indexes on methyl silicone and carbowax phases. The main components identified were linalool in the Ho-Sho and camphor in the Hon-Sho.

Extraction of essential oils from lime (Citrus latifolia Tanaka) by hydrodistillation and supercritical carbon dioxide BABT
Atti-Santos,Ana Cristina; Rossato,Marcelo; Serafini,Luciana Atti; Cassel,Eduardo; Moyna,Patrick.
In this work lime essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation and supercritical carbon dioxide. In the case of hydrodistillation, the parameters evaluated were extraction time and characteristics of the plant material. In supercritical extraction, the parameters evaluated were temperature, pressure, CO2 flow, extraction time and material characteristics. Considering citral content, the best results for hydrodistillation were obtained with a distillation time of 3 hours using whole peels. The best results for supercritical extraction were found using 60ºC, 90 bar, at a CO2 flow rate of 1 mL/ min for 30 minutes using milled peels. The best yields of lime oil were obtained by hydrodistillation (5.45% w/w) and supercritical extraction (7.93% w/w) for...

Morphological and chemical diversity in the Type IV glandular trichomes of Solananeae (S. sisymbrifolium and N. glauca) as germplasm resources for agricultural and food uses Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Cesio,Verónica; Dutra,Carmelo; Moyna,Patrick; Heinzen,Horacio.
Morphological variation in type IV trichomes in Ss and Ng was studied through SEM. The differences can be related to chemical differences in the excreted sugar esters. Ng trichomes exude two fractions, one of glucose tri-esters and the other one of sucrose tetra-esters, in a 3:7 ratio. The main acid found forming these esthers, is 3-methylvalerianic acid, in consonance to those secreted by other Solanaceae. Esters from Ss are novel structures, which can also be separated into three fractions, two of arabinoxylans, and the other one of arabinose, all glycosilated with β-hydroxipalmitic acid and sterified with the C12-C16 acids. All five fractions have antifungic activity at μg/cm² concentrations, both against common and mycotoxigenic...

Physico-chemical evaluation of Rosmarinus officinalis L. essential oils BABT
Atti-Santos,Ana Cristina; Rossato,Marcelo; Pauletti,Gabriel Fernandes; Rota,Luciana Duarte; Rech,Juarez Ciro; Pansera,Marcia Regina; Agostini,Fabiana; Serafini,Luciana Atti; Moyna,Patrick.
Nineteen samples of Rosmarinus officinalis were extracted by steam distillation in a pilot plant and evaluated in terms of chemical compositions and physico-chemical characteristics. The volatile oil yields ranged from 0.37% (1999 harvest) to 0.49% (1998 harvest). Twenty components were identified in the oils. The major components were alpha-pinene (40.55 to 45.10%), 1,8-cineole (17.40 to 19.35%), camphene (4.73 to 6.06%) and verbenone (2.32 to 3.86%). The physico-chemical parameters averaged 0.8887 g/cm³ for specific gravity, 1.4689 for refractive index, and +11.82° for optical rotation, and there were no significant variations in either the chemical or physico-chemical data in the different years.
