Young green turtles, Chelonia mydas, frequent the Syringodium isoetifolium seagrass beds on Reunion’s inner reef flats of fringing reefs, where they come to feed. Photographs of a green turtle looking for and eating the snake sea cucumber. Synapta maculata, were taken for the first time at Reunion Island. S. maculata is a sea cucumber species that was frequently observed on the inner reef flats and on the back-reef depression, but these abundances seem to be decreasing in recent years. Studies of S. maculata populations are needed to monitor changes in densities of this species, which has an important ecosystem role, as well as other observations to determine whether this case of green sea turtle predation is an isolated one or whether S. maculata may... |

An important eruption of Piton de La Fournaise on the Reunion Island started at April 2007. A large number of killed fishes were found floating on the sea infront of lava flows. More than 400 specimens were caught: 81 species for 42 families were identified. In the majority, these were deep species living between -100m and -1000m depth. 47 species are new for the ichthyologic fauna of the Reunion Island and about 12 species are probably new for the Science. This phenomenon, known from Hawaii and Galapagos, was not yet observed at the Reunion Island. |

For the first time ever at such a spatial scale, the EPICURE project is using the complementary exosystemic, functional and fisheries approaches to analyze and compare the partially exploited fish‐populating structure of the Geyser, Zélée, and Iris banks. This project focuses on three main points, which are 1) a habitat map of the three banks and an assessment of the live coral coverage as a proxy of the Geyser bank’s health, 2) a description of fish assemblages and a functional analysis relative to habitat type and time and 3) an estimate of the abundance index in structure size of the main exploited stocks. Overall, 42 habitats over 268 km² were mapped on the Geyser bank with 534 field verifications. On the Zélée bank, 24 habitats were mapped over 183... |
