This annotated list of the mammals, lizards and mollusks of the Leeward Group, is based on author’s collection and therefore includes additional mainland-records of the island-species. As a rule a short commentary is given only as a guide to the adopted nomenclature and classification, in case of controversial data which are not yet settled, if important for our knowledge of regional distribution, mentioning vernacular names. Regarding the mammals, all known material-records are included. |

It was a nice and cool evening in October 1958, when we were sitting in all safety and comfort in the Resthouse at Ranau. The sky had cleared up and Mt Kinabalu dominated the scenery in all its rugged majesty. Mr D.I. Nicholson, the Ecologist of Sandakan, and I were to start next day to climb the mountain. The preparations had been made, and, lingering around, my eye fell on a booklet on the table. It was ”A Tragedy of Borneo 1941-1945”, and its subtitle was ”Kinabalu National Memorial Park Project”. While reading, I became deeply impressed. The Tragedy of Borneo began seriously in September 1944. Then the 2400 prisoners, 1800 Australians and 600 Englishmen, who had been kept in a P.O.W. camp at Sandakan, were driven by the Japs westward, into the... |

Botanic Garden at the University of Malaya. A plan was submitted by Professor W.R. Stanton, head of the Botany Division, University of Malaya, K.L., to establish a new botanic garden of some 100 acres as a teaching facility and for the benefit of biological education institutes and the general public. It was proposed that the facility is partly self-financing. The locality suggested is the valley behind the Faculty of Science on the campus having a common boundary with the field area of the Faculty of Agriculture to which its functions would be complementary. It will have a permanent establishment of 7 graduates (of whom two at least will have honours), c. 8 technical staff and 50 labourers, clerks, drivers, etc. It will conduct its own husbandry and... |

Ladies and gentlemen! To-day 133 years ago, as you all know, ” ’ s Lands Plantentuin ‘ was founded under the direction of Professor Reinwardt. To-day, however, is the first time that ” ’s Lands Plantentuin“ celebrates its anniversary as ‘Kebun Raya Indonesia’, under the changed circumstances following the transfer of Sovereignty on December 27, 1949. |

In the Spring issue of next year I would like to include a new list of institutes, herbaria, and people for the Malesian area. Please e-mail to me directly: veldkamp@rulrhb.leidenuniv.nl Do NOT use attachments! Half the time I cannot read them, and then I have to write to you, and you again to me, and we surely can use our time better, don’t you think? |
