Characteristics of co-infections by HCV and HBV among Brazilian patients infected by HIV-1 and/or HTLV-1 BJID
Moreira,Marcia; Ramos,André; Netto,Eduardo M.; Brites,Carlos.
BACKGROUND: The human retroviruses HIV-1 and HTLV-1 share the routes of infection with hepatitis viruses B and C. Co-infection by these agents are a common event, but we have scarce knowledge on co-infection by two or more of these agents. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the characteristics and risk factors for co-infections by HBV and HCV in patients infected by HIV-1 or/and HTLV-1, in Salvador, Brazil. METHODS: In a case-control study we evaluated patients followed in the AIDS and HTLV clinics of Federal University of Bahia Hospital. Clinical and epidemiological characteristics were reviewed, and patients were tested for the presence of serological markers of HBV and HCV infections. HCV-infected patients were tested by PCR to evaluate the presence of viremia....

Efficacy and safety of Efavirenz in HIV patients on Rifampin for tuberculosis BJID
Pedral-Sampaio,Diana B.; Alves,Carmosina R.; Netto,Eduardo M.; Brites,Carlos; Oliveira,Adriano S.; Badaro,Roberto.
Forty-nine AIDS patients, most of who were antiretroviral therapy (ARV) naïve, with active tuberculosis, were treated with Rifampin 600mg, Isoniazid 400mg and Pirazinamide 2g daily. They also received ARV, consisting of Efavirenz (600mg/day) plus 2 NRTIs. All patients were prospectively followed for at least 24 months. Baselines were: male/female ratio 2:1, mean age 34.7 ± 9.4 yrs; weight 51 ± 9.0 kg, viral load 5.6 ± 0.6 logs, CD4 cell count 101 ± 128 cells/ mm³. Follow up mean values of data logs of VL and CD4+ cell /mm³ counts were: VL 1.7 and CD4+ 265; VL 1.3 and CD4+ 251; VL 1.4 and CD4+ 326 at 6, 12 and 24 months, respectively. Weight gain changes were: 5 ± 9.9 ± 12 and 21 ± 16 kg respectively at 6, 12 and 24 months. A non-concomitant ARV regimen was...

Evaluation of blood stream infections by Candida in three tertiary hospitals in Salvador, Brazil: a case-control study BJID
Barberino,Maria Goreth; Silva,Nanci; Rebouças,Carla; Barreiro,Katarine; Alcântara,Ana Paula; Netto,Eduardo M.; Albuquerque,Lígia; Brites,Carlos.
Invasive infections caused by Candida spp. are an important problem in immunocompromised patients. There is scarce data on the epidemiology of blood stream candidiasis in Salvador, Brazil. This study evaluates the risk factors associated with candidemia, among patients admitted to three tertiary, private hospitals, in Salvador, Brazil. We conducted a case-control, retrospective study to compare patients with diagnosis of candidemia in three different tertiary hospitals in Salvador, Brazil. Patients were matched for nosocomial, acquired infections, according to the causal agent: cases were defined by positive blood cultures for Candida species. Controls were those patients who had a diagnosis of systemic bacterial infection, with a positive blood culture to...

Interferon-gamma release assay performance in northeastern Brazil: influence of the IFNG + 874 A>T polymorphism BJID
Carneiro,Valdirene Leão; Bendicho,Maria Teresita; Santos,Rosalina Guedes; Casela,Marilda; Netto,Eduardo M.; Mota,Scarlet Torres Moraes; Pina,Iza Cristina Araújo; Nascimento,Roberto Meyer; Freire,Songeli Menezes; Barbosa,Theolis.
ABSTRACT Introduction Latent tuberculosis infection diagnosis based on the release of interferon-gamma in cultures of peripheral blood cells stimulated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigens has replaced the tuberculin skin test in many countries with low tuberculosis prevalence. The IFN-γ production can be influenced by genetic polymorphisms, of which the IFNG + 874 (rs62559044) locus is the most studied. We investigated the possible influence of the IFNG + 874 A/T polymorphism on interferon-gamma test performance. Methods Patients diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis (75), volunteers with positive tuberculin skin test (70) and healthy volunteers with negative tuberculin skin test and no history of contact with tuberculosis (57) were evaluated...

Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections among HIV-infected women in Brazil BJID
Travassos,Ana Gabriela Álvares; Brites,Carlos; Netto,Eduardo M.; Fernandes,Sheyla de Almeida; Rutherford,George W.; Queiroz,Conceição Maria.
This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and associated risk factors in HIV-infected pregnant women followed for prenatal care in Salvador, Bahia. This was a cross-sectional study of 63 women seeking prenatal care at a reference center. Participants were interviewed regarding socio-epidemiological and clinical history, and were tested for HBsAg, anti-HCV, anti HTLV I/II, VDRL, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, CD4 count, and HIV plasma viral load. The main outcome variable was the presence of any STI. The mean age of patients was 28.2 years (16-40 years). 23 (36.5%) were diagnosed with at least one STI. The frequency of diagnoses was: HBV, 3.2%; HCV, 8.1%;...

Risk of tuberculosis among household contacts in Salvador, Bahia BJID
Lemos,Antonio Carlos; Matos,Eliana D; Pedral-Sampaio,Diana B; Netto,Eduardo M..
Tuberculosis is one of the most important infectious diseases in the world. Only 68% of the estimated new tuberculosis (TB) cases in Brazil are diagnosed. Our aim was to determine the risk of infection among household contacts. Study design. Cohort of tuberculin-negative household contacts followed for 12 Months. Methods. Household contacts of randomly selected index acid-fast bacilli (AFB)-positive TB cases were evaluated through clinical examination, thorax X-ray, tuberculin, AFB smear and culture. Contacts with a negative response to the tuberculin test (less than 10 mm diameter) were retested after 90 days. Tuberculin reversal (used as a parameter of infection risk) was defined as an increase of at least 10 mm from the last measurement. Results. 269...
