Sommer, Tabea; Neumann, Helge.
In a one-year study in Northern Germany, we analyzed the effects of unsown fallow strips and landscape heterogeneity on the segetal flora of organically managed sandy fields. Diversity of plants was higher in two/three-year-old fallow strips compared to reference sites tilled with winter rye. Concerning endangered species, this effect was more pronounced in fields that were in a small-scale than in a homogenous landscape, as the latter possibly featured less colonization potential.

Winkler, Christian; Neumann, Helge.
The population dynamics of the Common Tree Frog (Hyla arborea) during conversion to organic farming was surveyed on an arable farm in northern Germany. The conver-sion had no notable effects on the number of calling males and on the number of breeding sites of this species. We concluded that further management measures (e. g. restauration of existing ponds, digging of suitable new breeding waters) are necessary to improve the situation of H. arborea on the farm.

Organic Eprints
Neumann, Helge; Loges, Ralf; Taube, F..

Neumann, Helge; Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm.
A two-year comparative study on the abundance of breeding birds on conventional and organic arable fields was carried out in Northern Germany (federal state of Schleswig-Holstein). Birds were surveyed on 40 pairs of fields (conventional/organic), which were selected with regard to similar field sizes and comparable boundary struc-tures (hedges, shrubs). Averaged over two experimental years, skylarks (Alauda arvensis) as well as pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) occurred more often on organic fields, while yellow wagtails (Motacilla flava) reached higher abundances on conven-tional fields. Diversity of farmland birds was not affected by type of management. Concerning the regional threat of farmland bird species, organic farming might make a contribution to...

Comparative analysis of conventional and organic farming systems: Diversity and abundance of farmland birds Organic Eprints
Neumann, Helge; Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm.
A comparative study on the abundance of breeding birds and wintering birds was carried out over the period 2005-2007 in conventionally and organically managed arable fields in Northern Germany. Birds were surveyed on 40 (breeding season) and 35 (non-breeding season) pairs of fields (conventional/organic), which were selected with regard to similar field sizes, comparable boundary structures (hedges, shrubs) and representative crop rotations. Averaged over three years of investigation, skylarks (Alauda arvensis) and, less distinct, pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) occurred more often on organic fields. In contrast, yellow wagtails (Motacilla flava) showed higher abundances on conventional fields in one year. The diversity of farmland bird species was not...

Neumann, Helge; Geweke, Oliver; Mauscherning, Inken; Schütz, Wolfgang; Loges, Ralf; Roweck, Hartmut; Taube, Friedhelm.
On two farms in Northern Germany the number of weed species in arable fields was about twice as large three to five years after conversion to organic agriculture compared with the last year of conventional cropping. Results indicate positive effects of organic farming on the weed flora although rare species are still lacking to date.

Koop, Bernd; Neumann, Helge.
The development of breeding bird populations during conversion to organic farming was surveyed on an arable farm in northern Germany. The change of farming prac-tices tended to result in a higher abundance of skylarks (Alauda arvenis). The popula-tions of other farmland bird species as well as the diversity of species showed no apparent trend during conversion.

Neumann, Helge; Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm.
Direct drilling of winter wheat in living mulches of white clover resulted in dry matter yields and forage quality of whole crop silage similar to wheat sown after ploughing. Grain yields, however, were lower in the intercropping system than in the sole wheat system. As wheat/clover “bicropping” caused very high grain yields of succeeding crops (oats, rye), it was concluded that the system allows to grow both cash crop and green manure crop in the same year and, therefore, might be a profitable alternative to otherwise common green manures in organic crop rotations.

Ermittlung des „Biodiversitätswerts“ landwirtschaftlicher Betriebe im Rahmen einzelbetrieblicher Naturschutzberatungen Organic Eprints
Neumann, Helge; Carstens, Jan-Marcus; Dierking, Uwe.
The feasibility of a new accelerated procedure to determine the “value of biodiversity” of agricultural holdings was tested on 80 farms in in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. The results of the practical application show, that the indicator system is a suitable method to be applied in the context of consultations on nature conservation on farms. Farm advisory also implied grants for conservation schemes. Implementation of measures on organic as well as on conventional farms was notably high.

Interviewgestützte Evaluation von Umweltbildungsveranstaltungen für Biolandwirte Organic Eprints
Pfannenberg, Anna; Neumann, Helge; Schertler, Katharina.
This paper discusses the effects of environmental education for organic farmers on the implementation of conservation measurements in farm management. By means of a telephone survey, a sample of 62 farmers was interviewed to evaluate the success of an education program, which consisted of theoretical lectures in winter as well as excursions in summer. The results of the interviews prove a positive feedback of farmers on the environmental education. However, concerning implementation of more comprehensive nature conservation measures appropriate (agricultural) political and financial frame conditions are essential.

Kleinteiligkeit im Ackerbau ein neues Vertragsnaturschutzprogramm für den Ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Neumann, Helge; Dierking, Uwe.
A proposal for a new contract nature protection scheme was tested on selected arable fields of organic farms in northern Germany. Management specifications included small scale division of large fields combined with specifications for crop distribution as well as for proportion of flower strips. Results of collateral bird registrations proved positive effects of the scheme on diversity and abundance of (threatened) breeding and roosting bird species. Due to the results, the scheme was included in the current (regional) rural development program Schleswig-Holstein.

Optimierungsstrategien des "Weite Reihe"-Verfahrens im ökologischen Winterweizenanbau: Variation von Reihenweite, Weizensorte, Aussaatstärke, Hackintensität und Untersaat Organic Eprints
Neumann, Helge; Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm.

Neumann, Helge.
Within the pilot scheme “KOLK” in Northern Germany it was proved how to integrate species conservation measures in organic arable farming. Management specifications included small scale division of large fields, limitation of mechanical weed control and creation of flower strips. Recordings of butterflies showed higher species diversity and total abundance in wildlife-friendly managed fields compared to reference sites. Registration of breeding birds resulted in no distinct differences between cultivation systems.

Werden Vogelschutzbelange im Ökologischen Landbau hinreichend berücksichtigt? Fallbeispiel Feldlerche (Alauda arvensis) Organic Eprints
Neumann, Helge.
