A cross-disciplinary approach to multicriteria assessment and communication of the effects of organic food systems Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon.
This paper describes a cross- and transdisciplinary approach to develop a multicriteria assessment framework that aims to help organic actors and stakeholders conduct, document and communicate balanced overall assessments of the effects of organic food systems on society and nature. The framework will be based on extensive analyses of existing methods for multicriteria assessment and communication, and the adaptation and development of selected methods to suit organic food systems and the principles organic agriculture. The validity and utility of the framework is secured through involvement of actors and participatory testing of prototypes in practice. The goal is to help sustain an integrated development of the organic production, contribute to open and...

A new tool to communicate multicriteria assessments in the organic value chain - an animated film Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon; Smith, Peter; Lykke-Olesen, Andreas; Fog, Erik.
Imagine there is a platform that makes it possible to discuss organics between all parties in the organic food chain based on their individual criteria. The MultiTrust project has endeavoured to find a tool to solve this challenge: How to make overall assessments of the effects of organic production in such a way that they actually can make a difference in practice. Organic products have to compete against conventional products, and often the organic have difficulties comparing when measured on single criteria. The hall mark of organics is the holistic approach, considering many issues at the same time, and therefore there is a need for overall assessments. Overall assessments can be very complex and therefore difficult to communicate. And it can be...

A polyocular framework for research on multifunctional farming and rural development Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo F.; Langvad, Anne Mette S..
The paradox of multifunctionality is that, on the one hand, the specialized functionalities of agriculture only arise because of the functional differentiation of social systems and scientific disciplines and, on the other hand, multifunctionality can only enter as a way to mediate between conflicts, interests and fragmented knowledge when different functions and observations of functions combine. The aim of this paper is to contribute to a theoretical and methodological platform for multidisciplinary research on multifunctional farming. With the notions of polyocular cognition and polyocular communication we introduce a second order, interdisciplinary communication process that can meet the challenge of creating a shared view on multifunctional farming....

A prototype tool for multicriteria assessments to develop organic food chains Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon.
The problem that we are faced with is that whereas research and experience suggest that stakeholder involvement is crucial to the successful development and implementation of methods of sustainability assessment, it is far from clear how to do this. In this paper we investigate how stakeholders may be involved in making and using overall assessments of organic food systems, and we propose a prototype for how this can be done.

A semiotic polyocular framework for multidisciplinary research in relation to multifunctional farming and rural development Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Langvad, Anne Mette Sørensen.
The concept of multifunctional farming rises out of a problematization of the role of agriculture in society and, in particular, in relation to rural development. Hitherto multifunctional farming has primarily been used as a notion on the relationship between agriculture and society concerning the range of commodity and non-commodity goods that farms provide for society. But the agro-economic achievements together with societal development have led to a point where praxis is questioned and discourse potentially reopened. In an indirect way, the notion of multifunctionality reflects, that aspects not captured by the distinction between commodity and non-commodity need to be reintroduced. This paper offers a new framework (theoretical and methodical)...

Agriculture and bio based economy a driver of rural transformation and livelihood? Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon.
The structures of rural communities are formed by the past development of agriculture. Industrialized agriculture does not need rural communities anymore, and are some cases even in conflict with the rural communities. The profits made by of agricultural activities have increasingly been mowed from rural to urban areas. Some sees rural development completely decoupled form agriculture; other sees bio economy as a potential revitalization of rural livelihood. This paper addresses the question under which condition agriculture and bio based economy can be a driver for revitalization for rural livelihood. This analysis is drawing on a range of different case studies of agricultural activities that have made a difference to the mainstream development. The main...

Agroecology and Social Sciences. In the perspectives of multidisiplinarity Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
In our presentation we will focus on agroecology and the problems of sustainable agroecosystems regulation, by including a multiperspectival approach (Alrøe and Noe 2011) and a social systems theoretical perspective, based primarily on theories of Niklas Luhmann, Bruno Latour, and Charles Peirce. We will address two main challenges raised by our view on agroecology, the epistemological challenge of how to observe agroecosystems as a whole, and the ontological challenge of how to understand the existence of agroecosystems independently of perspectives.

BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN FARMERS AND CONSUMERS: VALUE CREATION AND MEDIATION IN “PASTURE-RAISED BEEF” FOOD NETWORKS AgEcon
Bedoin, Florence; Kristensen, Troels; Noe, Egon.
The aim of this article is to explore how different quality dimensions (safety, aesthetics, ethics and rooted ness) are created in food networks; how these qualities are transferred until the consumers; and how this process is supported by the organisation of the food network. Our postulate is that combining the quality and organisation dimensions and exploring the link between them will provide an interesting perspective for improving the sharing of values in food networks. This framework is applied to five case studies of “pasture-raised beef” food networks in France, representing a diversity of organisations such as public label scheme, cooperate owned brand and direct sell from farmer to consumer. The results highlight the importance of the role of...

Combining Luhmann and Actor-Network Theory to see Farm Enterprises as Self-organizing Systems Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
From a rural, sociological point of view no social theories have so far been able to grasp the ontological complexity and special character of a farm enterprise as an entity in a really satisfying way. The contention of this paper is that a combination of Luhmann’s theory of social systems and the actor-network theory (ANT) of Latour, Callon, and Law offers a new and radical framework for understanding a farm as a self-organizing, heterogeneous system. Luhmann’s theory offers an approach to understand a farm as a self-organizing system (operating in meaning) that must produce and reproduce itself through demarcation from the surrounding world by selection of meaning. The meaning of the system is expressed through the goals, values, and logic of the...

Conventionalization or diversification? Development in the Danish organic production sector following market expansion Organic Eprints
Thorsøe, Martin H.; Noe, Egon.
The organic food market is constantly evolving and organic products are exchanged at multiple markets constituted by particular forms of interaction between producers and consumers. The aim of this paper is to explore how the market influences organic production by looking at the relation between the market and producers engagement towards trust and quality building as well as farm level production strategy. We distinguish between four different market agencements, an arrangement of actors with agency: 1) standardizing market agencement, 2) personalizing market agencement 3) virtualizing market agencement and 4) aesthetifying market agencement. Through qualitative interviews with organic producers, several different strategies are identified. The data...

Cultivating market relations - diversification in the Danish organic production sector following market expansion Organic Eprints
Thorsøe, Martin H.; Noe, Egon.
Developing a model to characterize the influence of the market on organic production has long been sought within agro-food studies. This paper explores how the market influences organic production by looking at the relationship between the market and producers’ engagement in trust and quality building as well as farm level production strategy in the Danish organic food market. Our perspective on the organic market is based on Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and, using qualitative interviews, we identify four market agencements, arrangements of actors endowed with agency: 1) standardizing market agencement, 2) personalizing market agencement 3) specializing market agencement and 4) aesthetifying market agencement. The market agencements enact multiple versions...

Danish case report: The Danish Food Communities Organic Eprints
Kjeldsen, Chris; Noe, Egon; Laursen, Klaus Brønd.
The Food Communities was chosen as a case for HealthyGrowth because they constitute a major novelty within the Danish foodscape. As indicated in section 3, the Food 2 Communities have emerged as the latest incarnation of a series of attempts to forge alternative food networks operating beyond the supermarket system. Denmark is distinguished by a large market share of organic food being sold via supermarkets, but The Food Communities are a novelty due to two factors, (1) they have experienced a rapid growth since the outset in 2010, and (2) they are organised in a decentralised manner, where they continue to split up the network in chapters, each operating within their distinct local area. The Food Communities are a predominantly urban phenomenon.

Disconnection of the ‘organic’ food production from the ‘organic network’? - A Danish actor network case study Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon.
The Danish case of organic agriculture is generally regarded as a success story. But the enrolment of new actors and the growing economic interest may lead to a change of the ideological foundation of organic agriculture. The scope of this paper is to explore what happens to organic agriculture through the process of dissemination of the organic mode of farming and enrolment of conventional farmers into organic farming from an Actor Network Theory (ANT) approach. This is explored through an in-depth case study of the local development and dissemination processes of organic farming. 11 organic farmers and two local advisors were interviewed. The narratives of the local organic network give the outlines to three phases in the network building. 1) The pioneer...

Does instrumentalization of “organic farming” lead to enhancement or dissolution? - A case study of the local dissemination processes of organic farming Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon.
The dissemination of “organic farming” is a topic of great attention as a measure to environmental regulation, high value food production, etc. and the Danish case of organic agriculture is generally regarded as a success story. The prevailing strategy of the Danish organic movement has been to mobilise non-organic actors in the dissemination of the ‘organic mode of farming’. A strategy that is embedded in a dogmatic belief that the ‘internal conversion’ in terms of values, ideas and thinking almost automatically will follow the ‘external conversion’ into the ‘organic mode’ of farming according to the rules. In this paper farmers’ network-strategy to disseminate organic farming is explored through a longitudinal case study within a local area with a high...
