Behavioral modulation by mutilation pictures in women BJMBR
Pereira,M.G.; Volchan,E.; Oliveira,L.; Machado-Pinheiro,W.; Rodrigues,J.A.; Nepomuceno,F.V.P.; Pessoa,L..
Previous studies have shown that women are more emotionally expressive than men. It is unclear, however, if women are also more susceptible to the emotional modulation of behavior imposed by an affective stimulus. To investigate this issue, we devised a task in which female subjects performed six sequential trials of visual target detection following the presentation of emotional (mutilation and erotic) or neutral pictures (domestic utensils and objects) and compared the data obtained in the present study with those described in a previous study with male subjects. The experiment consisted of three blocks of 24 pictures and each block had an approximate duration of 4 min. Our sample consisted of 36 subjects (age range: 18 to 26 years) and each subject...

Decreased platelet responsiveness to clopidogrel correlates with CYP2C19 and PON1 polymorphisms in atherosclerotic patients BJMBR
Marchini,J.F.M.; Pinto,M.R.; Novaes,G.C.; Badran,A.V.; Pavão,R.B.; Figueiredo,G.L.; Lago,I.M.; Lima-Filho,M.O.; Lemos,D.C.; Tonani,M.; Antloga,C.M.; Oliveira,L.; Lorenzi,J.C.; Marin-Neto,J.A..
Clopidogrel and aspirin are the most commonly used medications worldwide for dual antiplatelet therapy after percutaneous coronary intervention. However, clopidogrel hyporesponsiveness related to gene polymorphisms is a concern. Populations with higher degrees of genetic admixture may have increased prevalence of clopidogrel hyporesponsiveness. To assess this, we genotyped CYP2C19, ABCB1, and PON1 in 187 patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention. Race was self-defined by patients. We also performed light transmission aggregometry with adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and arachidonic acid during dual antiplatelet therapy. We found a significant difference for presence of the CYP2C19*2 polymorphism between white and non-white patients. Although 7%...

Effects of age and physical activity on the autonomic control of heart rate in healthy men BJMBR
Melo,R.C.; Santos,M.D.B.; Silva,E.; Quitério,R.J.; Moreno,M.A.; Reis,M.S.; Verzola,I.A.; Oliveira,L.; Martins,L.E.B.; Gallo-Junior,L.; Catai,A.M..
The effects of the aging process and an active life-style on the autonomic control of heart rate (HR) were investigated in nine young sedentary (YS, 23 ± 2.4 years), 16 young active (YA, 22 ± 2.1 years), 8 older sedentary (OS, 63 ± 2.4 years) and 8 older active (OA, 61 ± 1.1 years) healthy men. Electrocardiogram was continuously recorded for 15 min at rest and for 4 min in the deep breathing test, with a breath rate of 5 to 6 cycles/min in the supine position. Resting HR and RR intervals were analyzed by time (RMSSD index) and frequency domain methods. The power spectral components are reported in normalized units (nu) at low (LF) and high (HF) frequency, and as the LF/HF ratio. The deep breathing test was analyzed by the respiratory sinus arrhythmia...

Effects of chronic heart disease on skeletal muscle fiber size BJMBR
Mattiello-Sverzut,A.C.; Chimelli,L.; Teixeira,S.; Pierre,M.; Oliveira,L..
Size changes in muscle fibers of subjects with chronic heart disease (CHD) have been reported, although a consensus has not been achieved. The aims of the present study were to investigate a possible association between CHD and fiber size changes in the brachial biceps compared to subjects without heart disease. Forty-six muscle samples were obtained in autopsies of individuals (13 to 84 years) without neuromuscular disorders, 19 (10 males and 9 females) with, and 27 (14 males and 13 females) without CHD. In all cases muscle sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and processed for the visualization of myofibrillar ATPase activity. The lesser diameter of type 1 and type 2 fibers was obtained tracing their outlines (at least 150 fibers of each type...

Evaluation of electromyographic activity and heart rate responses to isometric exercise. The role played by muscular mass and type BJMBR
Silva,E.; Oliveira,L.; Catai,A.M.; Ferreira-Filho,P.; Bérzin,F.; Gallo Jr.,L..
The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between the electromyographic (EMG) activity and heart rate (HR) responses induced by isometric exercise performed by knee extension (KE) and flexion (KF) in men. Fifteen healthy male subjects, 21 ± 1.3 years (mean ± SD), were submitted to KE and KF isometric exercise tests at 100% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The exercises were performed with one leg (right or left) and with two legs simultaneously, for 10 s in the sitting position with the hip and knee flexed at 90o. EMG activity (root mean square values) and HR (beats/min) were recorded simultaneously both at rest and throughout the sustained contraction. The HR responses to isometric exercise in KE and KF were similar when...

Evaluation of genotoxicity through micronuclei test in workers of car and battery repair garages Genet. Mol. Biol.
Martino-Roth,M.G.; Viégas,J.; Amaral,M.; Oliveira,L.; Ferreira,F.L.S.; Erdtmann,B..
In this study, the micronuclei test (MNT) was applied in exfoliated cells of buccal mucosa, in order to evaluate the genotoxic risk associated with occupational exposure of mechanics, storage battery renovation workers, and car painters. For each individual, 3000 exfoliated buccal cells were analyzed. There was a significantly higher frequency of micronucleated cells (MNC) in the exposed workers than in controls. Smoking and drinking habits, age, and working time did not represent significant factors in terms of increasing the production of micronuclei (MN), when the control and the exposed groups were compared. These results allowed to conclude that the studied individuals belong to a risk group and should periodically undergo biological monitoring and...

Heart rate variability under resting conditions in postmenopausal and young women BJMBR
Ribeiro,T.F.; Azevedo,G.D.; Crescêncio,J.C.; Marães,V.R.F.S.; Papa,V.; Catai,A.M.; Verzola,R.M.M.; Oliveira,L.; Silva de Sá,M.F.; Gallo Jr.,L.; Silva,E..
The aim of the present study was to compare the modulation of heart rate in a group of postmenopausal women to that of a group of young women under resting conditions on the basis of R-R interval variability. Ten healthy postmenopausal women (mean ± SD, 58.3 ± 6.8 years) and 10 healthy young women (mean ± SD, 21.6 ± 0.82 years) were submitted to a control resting electrocardiogram (ECG) in the supine and sitting positions over a period of 6 min. The ECG was obtained from a one-channel heart monitor at the CM5 lead and processed and stored using an analog to digital converter connected to a microcomputer. R-R intervals were calculated on a beat-to-beat basis from the ECG recording in real time using a signal-processing software. Heart rate variability (HRV)...

Highly sensitive C-reactive protein and male gender are independently related to the severity of coronary disease in patients with metabolic syndrome and an acute coronary event BJMBR
Monteiro,C.M.C.; Pinheiro,L.F.; Izar,M.C.; Barros,S.W.; Vasco,M.B.; Fischer,S.M.; Povoa,R.M.; Brandão,S.A.; Santos,A.O.; Oliveira,L.; Carvalho,A.C.; Fonseca,F.A.H..
Patients with metabolic syndrome are at high-risk for development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events. The objective of this study was to examine the major determinants of coronary disease severity, including those coronary risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome, during the early period after an acute coronary episode. We tested the hypothesis that inflammatory markers, especially highly sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), are related to coronary atherosclerosis, in addition to traditional coronary risk factors. Subjects of both genders aged 30 to 75 years (N = 116) were prospectively included if they had suffered a recent acute coronary syndrome (acute myocardial infarction or unstable angina pectoris requiring hospitalization) and if...

Identification of anaerobic threshold using heart rate response during dynamic exercise BJMBR
Marães,V.R.F.S.; Silva,E.; Catai,A.M.; Novais,L.D.; Moura,M.A.S.; Oliveira,L.; Gallo Jr.,L..
The objective of the present study was to characterize the heart rate (HR) patterns of healthy males using the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model over a power range assumed to correspond to the anaerobic threshold (AT) during discontinuous dynamic exercise tests (DDET). Nine young (22.3 ± 1.57 years) and 9 middle-aged (MA) volunteers (43.2 ± 3.53 years) performed three DDET on a cycle ergometer. Protocol I: DDET in steps with progressive power increases of 10 W; protocol II: DDET using the same power values as protocol 1, but applied randomly; protocol III: continuous dynamic exercise protocol with ventilatory and metabolic measurements (10 W/min ramp power), for the measurement of ventilatory AT. HR was recorded and stored beat-to-beat...
