Hepatic granulomas in canine visceral leishmaniasis and clinical status Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Sant’Ana,J.A.P.; Lima,W.G.; Oliveira,M.R.; Simões,L.A.; Michalick,M.S.M.; Melo,M.N.; Tafuri,W.L.; Tafuri,Wg.L..
The histopathological description of intralobular hepatic granulomas in animals with a defined clinical status (asymptomatic, oligosymptomatic and symptomatic animals) was reported. Seventy-one mongrel dogs naturally infected with Leishmania chagasi were obtained from two Brazilian endemic areas: João Pessoa, PB and Belo Horizonte, MG. The hepatic parasite load was determined and compared to granuloma formation. Liver fragments from all infected animals showed remarkable leishmaniotic granulomatous inflammatory reaction. Granulomas with variable size were constituted by macrophages (parasitized or not with amastigotes of L. chagasi), some epithelioid cells, small numbers of lymphocytes, plasma cells, and rare neutrophils. Asymptomatic dogs had higher...

Histopathological and immunohistochemical study of the gastrointestinal tract from a dog naturally infected with Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi: a case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,F.L.; Tafuri,W.L.; Oliveira,M.R.; Tafuri,Wg. L..
Samples of stomach, duodenum, jejunun, ileum, cecum and colon were collected for Giemsa-smears ("imprints") from one asymptomatic mongrel dog, naturally infected with Leishmania (L) chagasi. Other fragments were obtained and fixed in formalin (10% and buffered) for histopathological and immunohistochemical studies. The immunohistochemistry was carried out by a streptavidin-peroxidase technique and it allowed to detect amastigote forms of Leishmania chagasi in the different paraffin gut sections. The principal lesion observed was a discrete to moderate chronic inflammatory reaction in the mucosa and submucosa in all fragments of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). A chronic cellular exsudate was observed in all GIT tissues and it was composed by mononuclear...

Parasitic infections in germfree animals BJMBR
Vieira,L.Q.; Oliveira,M.R.; Neumann,E.; Nicoli,J.R..
The association of vertebrate hosts with the indigenous microbiota and its effect on the response to infections has long been a subject of scientific curiosity. From the first theory supported by Louis Pasteur that life would be impossible in the absence of associated microorganisms to the development of germfree mammals for research, a lot was learned about how the normal microbiota influences the environment in which pathogens may find themselves. In the present review, we attempt to summarize the more recent results from our group and others on the influence of the normal microbiota on the outcome of parasitic infections. Our results and those of others point to a complex relationship between the mammalian system and its indigenous microbiota, leading...

Serum evaluation of leptin, IL-6, IGF-1 and estrogen in obese bitches with early stages of mammary carcinoma Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Teixeira,S.V.; Silva,I.L.D.; Nunes,F.C.; Campos,C.B.; Oliveira,M.R.; Lavalle,G.E.; Cassali,G.D..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to relate the serum concentration IL-6, IGF-1, leptin and estrogen in non-castrated bitches with or without overweight and early stage mammary carcinomas. Forty-three bitches were divided into four groups, two groups without mammary carcinomas with and without overweight, and two groups with mammary carcinomas with and without overweight. Overweight bitches, with or without mammary carcinomas, were statistically different from bitches by ideal weight, in relation to ECC, IMCC and body fat percentages (P< 0.0001). There was a positive correlation between ECC and IMCC (P< 0.0001), ECC and % GC (P< 0.0001), and IMCC and % GC (P< 0.0001). A positive correlation was found between serum leptin and IL-6 (P= 0.0451)...

Weight evaluation of Tabapuã cattle raised in northeastern Brazil using random-regression models Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,M.R.; Azevêdo,D.M.; Malhado,C.; Pires,L.; Martins Filho,R.; Sousa Júnior,S..
ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to compare random-regression models used to describe changes in evaluation parameters for growth in Tabapuã bovine raised in the Northeast of Brazilian. The M4532-5 random-regression model was found to be best for estimating the variation and heritability of growth characteristics in the animals evaluated. Estimates of direct additive genetic variance increased with age, while the maternal additive genetic variance demonstrated growth from birth to up to nearly 420 days of age. The genetic correlations between the first four characteristics were positive with moderate to large ranges. The greatest genetic correlation was observed between birth weight and at 240 days of age (0.82). The phenotypic correlation between...
