A monograph of the genus Evolvulus Naturalis
Ooststroom, S.J. van.
The great difficulties arising in the identification of a number of plants belonging to the genus Evolvulus, which plants were found in several recent collections of Convolvulaceae and were kindly entrusted to me for study, induced me to submit this genus to a further examination. It soon proved how great the prevailing confusion was, both in literature and in the herbaria. Various species were again and again wrongly interpreted and this especially concerns those which had been described by the older authors. Thanks to the invaluable help of a great number of herbaria I was in a position to bring about some order in the genus. Still numerous questions remain unsolved. A close study of living material, preferably on the habitat itself, will often be of...

Aellen found in the Netherlands. The first species, A. tamariscinus Nutt. was found in 1953 as a wool-alien. In October 1961 both dioecious species were collected growing together along a roadside near Wageningen, introduced with corn. Differential characters between the two species are given and also a figure of a bract (fig. 1, a), an outer (fig. 1, b) and an inner tepal (fig. 1, c) of a female flower of A. palmeri. A. palmeri occurs in the southwestern United States and in Mexico. 2. Polygonum capitatum Hamilt. ex Don (fig. 1, d) was found in 1960 in a beet field between Wylre...

Ooststroom, S.J. van; Reichgelt, Th.J..
1. Navarretia squarrosa (Eschsch.) Hook. & Arn. is mentioned here in addition to our last paper on the Netherlands adventitious flora, published in Gorteria 1, no. 10, 1963, p. 113—117. The species was found in 1962 near Joure, prov. Friesland, and was most probably introduced with bird-seed. 2. All Dutch specimens formerly named Erodium chium (Burm. f.) Willd. and E. cygnorum Nees appear to belong to the Australian E. crinitum Carolin. This species was found as an alien near the wool-mills at Tilburg, prov. N. Brabant and along the river Meuse near Meers, Grevenbicht, and Itteren, prov. Limburg. In the last named localities it was most probably introduced from the wool-factories along the Vesdre in Belgium. Differences between E. cygnorum and E....

Two acquisitions to the Netherlands adventitious flora from the year 1963. 1. Kochia scoparia subsp. densiflora (Turcz. ex Moq.) Aellen, distinguished from the typical subspecies by the long hairs at the base of the flowers, was found near Amsterdam as a grain introduction. 2. Tetragonolobus maritimus (L.) Roth. This species was found on the grassy slope of the Kunderberg near Voerendaal (prov. Limburg). It is supposed to be adventitious there, what is also said of the specimens from the nearest locality in Germany, the Schneeberg near Vaals, W. of Aachen. Polygonum compactum Hook. f. and Dicentra eximia (Ker) Torr., escaped from cultivation.

Schulz was most likely introduced with blocks of granite for the “Delta-works”, near Hellevoetsluis, prov. of South Holland. It is indigenous in parts of Southern and Central Europe. Differences between this species and the native E. gallicum (Willd.) O. E. Schulz are given. 2. Euphorbia dentata Michx., a native of the Central United States and Mexico, was found along a highway near Bodegraven, prov. of South Holland. As far as known to us this is the first record of introduction of the species into Europe. 3. Trientalis borealis Raf., a North American species, was found in a wood near Apeldoorn, prov....

Aanwinsten voor de Nederlandse flora, hoofdzakelijk uit 1967-1974 Naturalis
Ooststroom, S.J. van; Mennema, J.; Adema, F..
In 1966 the decease of Th. J. Reichgelt caused a stagnation in the regular publication of acquisitions to the adventitious flora of the Netherlands. Only VAN OOSTSTROOM (1970a and b), ADEMA (1974), and VAN DER MEIJDEN (1975) incidentally continued this series. From 1975 onward the acquisitions to the adventitious flora of the Netherlands — and the new escapes from cultivation — are published in the annual lists with records of rare species. The present publication has the purpose of filling up the gap between 1967 and 1974 and includes: A. Native taxa — a few infraspecific taxa new for the Netherlands; B. Adventitious species; C. Species escaped from cultivation. In the lists B and C the original area of the species has been added.

An old collection of plants from Surinam in the Rijksherbarium at Leiden Naturalis
Ooststroom, S.J. van.
Some time ago I described in Blumea (5) a plant collection in book-form, collected by Hermann in Ceylon. This collection consists of two large volumes, each containing a number of dried specimens. Besides these two volumes, the Rijksherbarium is in the possession of a third one of the same size and with a similar binding, bearing on its back the title in golden characters on a darker ground: Herb: Viv: Promont. Bonae Spei Vol: I. When I saw the specimens of this volume for the first time, it struck me that they did not show the peculiar type of plants from the Cape region. A somewhat closer examination lead me to the supposition, that I had to do with plants from South America. I was strengthened in that opinion by the fact that many of the vernacular...

Argyreia lamii, a new species from the Malay Peninsula Naturalis
Ooststroom, S.J. van.
Among a number of specimens of Convolvulaceae from the Malay Peninsula sent to me for identification by Mr. J. Sinclair, Singapore, I found a species of Argyreia, which appeared to be new to botanical science. I named it A. lamii in honour of Prof. Dr. H.J. Lam, Director of the Rijksherbarium and Professor of Systematic Botany at the University of Leiden, to whom the present Jubilee-volume of Blumea is dedicated.
