The combination of soil science, forestry, agronomy and biology allowed an analytical comparison of various experimental mixed culture systems. From these studies, a descriptor system was developed which allows to understand the contribution of each plant species to nutrient cycling, water distribution, litter formation, overall biomass production and crop production. This knowledge allows to combine plants so that their properties interact to form a system, which minimizes mineral losses and which regulates air humidity and water distribution and thus leads to stable crop production. The general conclusion which can be drawn after eight years of polyculture study is: a) stable productions systems for samllholder families have bee developed; b) the systems... |

Plants of six species from the Melastomataceae family (Miconia spp. and Bellucia spp.) taken from secondary forest stands of Terra Firme near Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, were studied with regard to growth form, biometric traits of the plants, morphological and anatomical characteristics of leaves and wood. In addition, plant biomass and the content of mineral nutrients of different parts of the plants were analysed, and xylem flux measurements were carried out to determine the specific water uptake of the plants. The aim of the studies was to detect causal links between the parameters measured and the ecological behaviour of the species as observed in the field, in order to provide an autecological description of the species. The results show that the plant... |

Near Manaus, Brasil, a recultivation experiment of a fallowing agricultural area is presently carried out. A polyculture system has been implanted to reach maximum economical and ecological stability. It includes twelve perennial and three annual or biannual useful plant species. Some of them are unknown in European countries. In four different combinations the plant species are grown together to give rise to the following products: latex production, pulpa for juice, icecream, desserts, seeds for chocolate; fruits, palmito, food colourings, weaving material, nuts, timber, oil, copra, fibre, etc. Additionally to these ecologically well adapted plant species the exotic useful plant species Citrus sinenses is planted. Several ecological and practical aspects... |

The main objective is to device a system whereby individual species of vascular plants and structural traits of vegetation can serve as indicators of site conditions, especially for the intensity and type of pre-use of sites (=disturbance) and hence with that for the actual suitability of the sites for agriculture. |

An evaluation of the effects of the experimental variants on the useful plants and the plantion systems calls for knlwledge of the extremely complex interaction between useful plants and spontaneous vegetation and of other environmental factors. A preliminary analysis of the spontaneous vegetation revealed that species compostion and structural traits of the vegetation were closely linked to the pre-use of the sites and recent management measure. In this study the data sets and some of the results of theira analysis to date are presented and discussed. |

The presentation of the conceptual basis for the vegetation science approach to the ENV 12/2. This project attempts to provide a comparative, functionala description of different types of anthropogenic vegetation in terra firme sites of the Central Amazon and of the plant types occurring in these sites. The main objective is to devise a system whereby individual species of vascular plants and structural traits of vegetation can server as indicators of site conditions. The classification of frequently occurring plant species on the basis of growth form types and characteristics of generative and vegetative propagation was a first step towards this goal. The approach require floristic, syn- and autecological studies at a broad range of sites. The data sets... |
