A new device to follow temporal variations of oxygen demand in deltaic sediments: the LSCE benthic station ArchiMer
Toussaint, Flora; Rabouille, Christophe; Cathalot, Cecile; Bombled, Bruno; Abchiche, Abdel; Aouji, Oualid; Buchholtz, Gilles; Clemencon, Aurelien; Geyskens, Nicolas; Repecaud, Michel; Pairaud, Ivane; Verney, Romaric; Tisnerat-laborde, Nadine.
A new benthic station equipped with oxygen microelectrodes and environmental sensors was developed by Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de L’Environnement (LSCE) and Division Technique of the Institut National des Sciences de L’Univers (DT-INSU) to perform in situ time series monitoring of sediment oxygen demand, linked to the mineralization of organic matter. The time series typically cover periods of 2-3 months, with a base frequency of 1 set of oxygen profiles per day. The profiling head assessed the lateral heterogeneity of the sediment oxygen demand at the beginning of the time series over a 0.8-m long rectangle to discriminate spatial and temporal variability. A continuous recalibration is performed using a moored oxygen optode anchored to the...

Air-Sea Turbulent Fluxes From a Wave-Following Platform During Six Experiments at Sea ArchiMer
Bourras, Denis; Cambra, Remi; Marié, Louis; Bouin, Marie-noëlle; Baggio, Lucio; Branger, Hubert; Beghoura, Houda; Reverdin, Gilles; Dewitte, Boris; Paulmier, Aurélien; Maes, Christophe; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Pairaud, Ivane; Fraunié, Philippe; Luneau, Christopher; Hauser, Danièle.
Turbulent fluxes at the air‐sea interface are estimated with data collected in 2011 to 2017 with a low‐profile platform during six experiments in four regions. The observations were carried out with moderate winds (2‐10 m s‐1) and averaged wave heights of 1.5 m. Most of the time, there was a swell, with an averaged wave age (the ratio between wave phase speed and wind speed) being equal to 2.8±1.6. Three flux calculation methods are used, namely the eddy‐covariance (EC), the inertial‐dissipation (ID), and the bulk methods. For the EC method, a spectral technique is proposed to correct wind data from platform motion. A mean bias affecting the friction velocity (u*) is then evaluated. The comparison between EC u* and ID u* estimates suggests that a constant...

The Mediterranean is considered a biodiversity hot‐spot. The Mediterranean represents less than 1% of global ocean surface, but it hosts about 20% of marine biodiversity with a high level of endemic species. The Mediterranean is also considered a hot‐spot for climate change with expected warming over the average along with a very likely increase in the occurrence of heat waves in climate change. In fact Mediterranean waters have been already significantly warming up during the last decades, and this trend is expected to increase during the rest of the 21st century. Mediterranean marine ecosystems are already displaying clear responses to warming such as pelagic productivity, shifts in species’ geographical distributions, modifications of migratory patterns...

Behaviour and fate of urban particles in coastal waters: Settling rate, size distribution and metals contamination characterization ArchiMer
Oursel, B.; Garnier, C.; Pairaud, Ivane; Omanovic, D.; Durrieu, G.; Syakti, A. D.; Le Poupon, C.; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Lucas, Y..
The evaluation of contaminant net fluxes from the coast to the open sea requires the study of terrigeneous particles behaviour and fate. We studied the particles issued from two small coastal rivers whose waters are mixed with treated wastewater (TWW) coming from the Marseille wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) just before discharge to the Mediterranean Sea. An experimental device was developed and used to investigate particles settling rates, size distribution and metallic contamination when mixing with seawater. The particles were sampled in flood deposits of rivers and outlets during rainy periods and in the outlet water during dry periods. The flood deposits were mainly composed of 50–200 μm-sized particles, higher metals content being observed in the...

Cold-water coral ecosystems in Cassidaigne Canyon: An assessment of their environmental living conditions ArchiMer
Fabri, Marie-claire; Bargain, Annaelle; Pairaud, Ivane; Pedel, Laura; Taupier-letage, I..
The Cassidaigne canyon is one of the two canyons (together with Lacaze-Duthiers) of the French Mediterranean coast in which cold-water corals have settled and formed large colonies, providing a structural habitat for other species. Nevertheless, the communities settled in the Cassidaigne canyon are physically impacted by discharges of bauxite residues. New information on the distribution of the species Madrepora oculata and the associated species diversity in Cassidaigne canyon was provided by videos and photos acquired in 2013. An area investigated at 515 m depth harbored a high density of small colonies of M. oculata. The water column structure of the area was described by using a CTD transect deployed along the axis of the canyon. High resolution (10 m...

Development of a 3D Coupled Physical-Biogeochemical Model for the Marseille Coastal Area (NW Mediterranean Sea): What Complexity Is Required in the Coastal Zone? ArchiMer
Fraysse, Marion; Pinazo, Christel; Faure, Vincent Martin; Fuchs, Rosalie; Lazzari, Paolo; Raimbault, Patrick; Pairaud, Ivane.
Terrestrial inputs (natural and anthropogenic) from rivers, the atmosphere and physical processes strongly impact the functioning of coastal pelagic ecosystems. The objective of this study was to develop a tool for the examination of these impacts on the Marseille coastal area, which experiences inputs from the Rhone River and high rates of atmospheric deposition. Therefore, a new 3D coupled physical/biogeochemical model was developed. Two versions of the biogeochemical model were tested, one model considering only the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles and a second model that also considers the phosphorus (P) cycle. Realistic simulations were performed for a period of 5 years (2007-2011). The model accuracy assessment showed that both versions of the...

Flood inputs in a Mediterranean coastal zone impacted by a large urban area: Dynamic and fate of trace metals ArchiMer
Oursel, B.; Garnier, C.; Zebracki, Mathilde; Durrieu, G.; Pairaud, Ivane; Omanović, D.; Cossa, Daniel; Lucas, Yves.
Trace elements and organic carbon inputs to the Mediterranean sea from an urbanized area (Marseille city) were studied and characterized during flood events. Inputs were brought to the sea by two small coastal rivers whose waters were mixed together and also with treated wastewaters (TWW) just before discharge. The monitoring of the rivers during flood events showed the high temporal dynamics of water flow, suspended particulate matter (SPM), organic carbon and trace metals concentrations, typical of small coastal Mediterranean rivers and requiring an appropriate sampling strategy. Dissolved/particulate partition coefficient (log Kd) in rivers during floods remained quasi-constant for a given trace element, but differed from one element to another...

Fusion of Sun-Synchronous and Geostationary Images for Coastal and Ocean Color Survey Application to OLCI (Sentinel-3) and FCI (MTG) ArchiMer
Peschoud, Cecile; Minghelli, Audrey; Mathieu, Sandrine; Lei, Manchun; Pairaud, Ivane; Pinazo, Christel.
Open ocean and coastal area monitoring requires multispectral satellite images with a middle spatial resolution ({\sim !300 {text{m}}}) and a high temporal repeatability ({\sim !1 {text{h}}}) . As no current satellite sensors have such features, the aim of this study is to propose a fusion method to merge images delivered by a low earth orbit (LEO) sensor with images delivered by a geostationary earth orbit (GEO) sensor. This fusion method, called spatial spectral temporal fusion (SSTF), is applied to the future sensors—Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) (on Sentinel-3) and Flexible Combined Imager (FCI) (on Meteosat Third Generation) whose images were simulated. The OLCI bands, acquired at t _{0} , are divided by the oversampled corresponding FCI band...

Generation of harmonics and sub-harmonics from an internal tide in a uniformly stratified fluid: numerical and laboratory experiments ArchiMer
Pairaud, Ivane; Staquet, Chantal; Sommeria, Joel; Mahdizadeh, Mahdi M..
This paper focuses on the internal tide emitted from a continental slope in a uniformly stratified fluid. Results from numerical simulations using the MITgcm and from laboratory experiments performed on the Coriolis platform in Grenoble are compared. Due to their peculiar dispersion relation, internal gravity waves organize into localized beams of energy. We show that the beam structure is well-predicted by the viscous theory of [10], assuming that the internal gravity wave field is emitted by a horizontally oscillating cylinder whose radius is the radius of curvature of the topography at the beam emission. The wave beam can bear a sub-harmonic parametric instability whose vertical scale is recovered from resonant interaction theory. Reflection of the wave...

Geostationary Image Simulation on Coastal Waters Using Hydrodynamic Biogeochemical and Sedimentary Coupled Models ArchiMer
Lei, Manchun; Minghelli, Audrey; Fraysse, Marion; Pairaud, Ivane; Verney, Romaric; Pinazo, Christel.
This study proposes a method to simulate the images of the future European geostationary sensor dedicated to ocean color sensor: the geostationary ocean color advanced permanent imager (GeoOCAPI), and it demonstrates the sensor capabilities to monitor the water composition throughout the day. The temporal variation of the coastal seascape is obtained from biogeochemical and hydrosedimentary models, the ocean-atmosphere radiance is obtained from the water and atmosphere radiative transfer model. The GeoOCAPI images are simulated with 400-m resolution, 18 spectral bands with associated signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and with 1-h acquisition frequency, on the Gulf of Lion (Marseille, France) during a pollution event caused by the urban outfall of Cortiou in...

Glider-Based Active Acoustic Monitoring of Currents and Turbidity in the Coastal Zone ArchiMer
Gentil, Mathieu; Many, Gaël; Durrieu De Madron, Xavier; Cauchy, Pierre; Pairaud, Ivane; Testor, Pierre; Verney, Romaric; Bourrin, François.
The recent integration of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) onto underwater gliders changes the way current and sediment dynamics in the coastal zone can be monitored. Their endurance and ability to measure in all weather conditions increases the probability of capturing sporadic meteorological events, such as storms and floods, which are key elements of sediment dynamics. We used a Slocum glider equipped with a CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth), an optical payload, and an RDI 600 kHz phased array ADCP. Two deployments were carried out during two contrasting periods of the year in the Rhone River region of freshwater influence (ROFI). Coastal absolute currents were reconstructed using the shear method and bottom tracking measurements, and...

Impact of an intrusion by the Northern Current on the biogeochemistry in the eastern Gulf of Lion, NW Mediterranean ArchiMer
Ross, Oliver N.; Fraysse, Marion; Pinazo, Christel; Pairaud, Ivane.
We present the results from the RHOMA2011-LEG2 campaign that took place in the eastern Gulf of Lion from 7 to 17 Oct 2011 and combine them with remote sensing observations and results from a 3D coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model to study an intrusion event of the Northern Current (NC) onto the continental shelf in the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean). Our analysis shows that during the intrusion, the previously upwelled nutrient-rich water present on the shelf is replaced by warmer and mostly oligotrophic NC water within a matter of 2–3 days. This has a marked impact on the local biogeochemistry in the Gulf with pre-intrusion Chl-a concentrations in the surface layer of over 0.5 mg m−3 dropping to near the detection limit within less than 72 h. The...

Impacts of climate change on coastal benthic ecosystems: assessing the current risk of mortality outbreaks associated with thermal stress in NW Mediterranean coastal areas ArchiMer
Pairaud, Ivane; Bensoussan, Nathaniel; Garreau, Pierre; Faure, Vincent; Garrabou, Joaquim.
In the framework of climate change, the increase in ocean heat wave frequency is expected to impact marine life. Large-scale positive temperature anomalies already occurred in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea in 1999, 2003 and 2006. These anomalies were associated with mass mortality events of macrobenthic species in coastal areas (0–40 m in depth). The anomalies were particularly severe in 1999 and 2003 when thousands of kilometres of coasts and about 30 species were affected. The aim of this study was to develop a methodology to assess the current risk of mass mortality associated with temperature increase along NW Mediterranean continental coasts. A 3D regional ocean model was used to obtain the temperature conditions for the period 2001–2010, for...

Intrusion of Rhone River diluted water into the Bay of Marseille: Generation processes and impacts on ecosystem functioning ArchiMer
Fraysse, Marion; Pairaud, Ivane; Ross, Oliver N.; Faure, Vincent M.; Pinazo, Christel.
The Rhone River provides the largest inputs of terrestrial freshwater and nutrients into the Mediterranean Sea. The Rhone River diluted water intrusions into the Bay of Marseille were investigated, examining their physical generation processes and associated biogeochemical impact by using in situ observations, remote sensing data, and a three-dimensional physical/biogeochemical coupled model. During our study period from 2007 to 2011, Rhone River intrusions occurred on average 7.6 times per year and affected more frequently the northern part of the bay. A classification of intrusion events in three categories is proposed (short lived, big, and small) as a function of their duration and spatial extent. The intrusions appeared to be driven by: (i) wind...

In the framework of sustainable development, the anthropogenic impact of large coastal cities on the marine ecosystem is a key issue. This project aimed to improve our knowledge in marine ecosystem response to the anthropogenic supplies (from rivers, sewage outflows and atmosphere) from large cities. In particular, the goal is to underline how the physical forcing decreases or increases the anthropogenic impact on the coastal ecosystem and the assessment of the chemical contaminant (PCB) inputs (from city to sea) and exports (from mid-sea to open sea).
