Auswirkungen der Grünlandnachsaat in einer Kurzrasenweide bei Biologischer Bewirtschaftung Organic Eprints
Starz, Walter; Steinwidder, Andreas; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes; Schmied, Veronika.

Starz, Walter; Steinwidder, Andreas; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes.

Starz, Walter; Rohrer, Hannes; Pfister, Rupert.

Changing towards a seasonal low-input pastoral dairy production system in moutainous regions of Austria - results from pilot farms during reorganisation Organic Eprints
Steinwidder, Andreas; Starz, Walter; Podstatzky, Leopold; Kirner, Leopold; Pötsch, Erich M.; Pfister, Rupert; Gallnböck, Markus.
To get informations on pastoral milk production in mountainous regions a research project with six pilot dairy farms (5 organic, 1 low input) was carried out. The farms were supervised during the reorganisation period leading to a seasonal milk production system. Within an observation period of three years a strict annual cycle in milk production and reproduction was implemented on two farms only. Depending on the farm specific conditions and the implementation level of the low-input strategy on average a pasture proportion of 42 % (26 to 61 %) of the total DM intake y-1 could be determined. On four farms, which fed low amounts of supplemental feed during the grazing period, a pasture proportion of 50 % of the total DM intake y-1 was realized in the last...

Close relationship between pre- and post-calving reticuloruminal pH Levels in dairy cows Organic Eprints
Steinwidder, Andreas; Horn, Marco; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes; Gasteiner, Johann.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of prepartum reticuloruminal pH values on postpartum pH values of lactating cows at two concentrate supplementation levels. An indwelling pH measurement system with a wireless data transmitting unit was given to 9 heifers and 11 cows orally 2 weeks before expected calving. The pH was measured from week 2 prepartum to week 6 postpartum. Prepartum, all animals were fed hay and grass silage only. After parturition the animals were assigned to one of two concentrate supplementation levels (Con and Low). During the first 6 weeks postpartum, 5.6 kg and 2.9 kg dry matter per day of concentrates were fed to cows in groups Con and Low, respectively. Before parturition, no effect of the week on the mean pH...

Continuous grazing in comparison to cutting management on an organic meadow in the eastern Alps Organic Eprints
Starz, Walter; Steinwidder, Andreas; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes.
Continuous grazing is an appropriate pasture system for dairy cows in low input milk production systems like organic farming. Grazing increases for economic reasons and is also caused by regulations in organic farming. If a dairy farm converts a pasture-based system, cows will start grazing on a cutting-managed meadow. Due to the utilisation changing from cutting to grazing, a conversion of the botanical composition and the quantity and quality yield is expected. To document and assess such conversions, a three-year field trial was carried out on the organic grassland and dairy farm of the AREC Raumberg-Gumpenstein between 2007 and 2009. In this study, changes in the botanical composition were found. In contrast to botanical composition, no significant...

Do different cow types respond differently to a reduction of concentrate supplementation in an Alpine low-input dairy system? Organic Eprints
Horn, Marco; Steinwidder, Andreas; Pfister, Rupert; Gasteiner, Johann; Vestergaard, M.; Larsen, Torben; Zollitsch, Werner.
Forage based low-input dairy systems include a certain risk of a temporary undersupply with nutrients and energy. Therefore the aim of the present study was to investigate the productive, reproductive and metabolic response of two different dairy cow types to a reduction of concentrate supplementation in an Alpine low-input milk production system. The cow types compared were conventional Austrian Brown Swiss (BS) and a specific strain of Holstein Friesian (HFL). The latter was primarily selected for lifetime performance and Fitness under low-input conditions and is therefore considered by Farmers as being better suited for low-input production systems. Both genotypes were assigned to one of two concentrate supplementation levels, receiving 618 kg (Con) or...

Lehner, Daniel; Starz, Walter; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes.

Starz, Walter; Kiendler, Stefanie; Steinwidder, Andreas; Lehner, Daniel; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes.
In diesem Fall dürfte...

Einfluss der Umstellung von Stall- auf Weidefütterung auf den Vormagen pH-Wert von Milchkühen Organic Eprints
Steinwidder, Andreas; Horn, Marco; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes; Gasteiner, Johann.
To investigate the effect of feed transition from barn feeding to pasture on the course of ruminal pH a study with 8 lactating dairy cows was undertaken. Therefore, an indwelling pH-measurement and data transmitting system was used. The experiment started at 27th March 2012 and a gradual transition from barn feeding to pasture feeding was done (periods P1-P6). After 7 days of barn feeding (P1) animals were given pasture progressively with increasing grazing time from 2 to 7 h/d (P2, day 8-14). In P3 (day 15-21) the cows spent 7 hours/d on pasture. Beginning on day 22, animals had 20 h/d access to pasture (continuous grazing), only semi-daily interrupted for 2 hours for milking and additional feeding (P4-P6). During the barn feeding period (P1), average...

Einfluss der Wirtschaftsdüngerform auf die Entwicklung von Dauergrünlandbeständen im Berggebiet Organic Eprints
Starz, Walter; Steinwidder, Andreas; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes.
In this study slurry, manure and compost from dairy cattle were used on a newly sown meadow. The influence of these three fertilisers on botany and forage yield were tested in a randomized block design. The amount of farm fertilizers was calculated by 1.2 LU ha-1 considering quantity storage losses. No differences between used organic farm fertilisers in botanical composition were found. The highest LAI (4,7 ground level) and the highest dry matter yield of 11,045 kg DM ha-1 were measured in slurry fertilisation.

Starz, Walter; Ehrmann, S.; Rohrer, Hannes; Pfister, Rupert.
Slurry is known as a source of ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. NH3 emissions depend on the pH value of the slurry and previous studies show that emissions could be reduced by lowering the pH. In order to estimate the influence of stirring on the pH and the NH3 emission potential of cattle slurry, three treatments (A not stirred, B stirred for 1 x 60 min and C stirred for 6 x 10 min per day) were compared. The results show that no positive effects of stirring cattle slurry, neither in economic nor in ecological terms, can be expected.

Steinwidder, Andreas; Starz, Walter; Gotthardt, Agnes; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes.
In a three year on-going project 10 organic dairy farms are supervised by developing farm adopted strategies to reduce the concentrate input in dairy cow feeding. The researchers and advisors consult and accompany the pioneering group. They stimulate active learning and record the results and experiences. Different approaches are used in the project to achieve the project aim: (1) discussions about possible strategies and their results (2) on-farm documentations and observational research, monitoring and comparison, (3) evaluation and systematic inclusion of the experiences of farmers (stable schools), advisors and researchers in the project, (4) describing “systems that work”. Within the first two project years, farmers reduced the concentrate input from...

Starz, Walter; Kreuzer, Josef; Steinwidder, Andreas; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes.
Continuous (CG) and rotational grazing (RG) are important strategies for pasture based organic milk production systems. This study tests both grazing systems on their suitability for permanent grassland areas with drought tendency. The investigation was carried out on an organic dairy farm in Lower Austria on a permanent pasture sward in 2010. Simulated grazed swards were used at an average sward height of 8.5 cm (CG) and 14.8 cm (RG). CG variant was cut 9 times and RG variant 6 times in 2010. Low precipitation periods showed an effect on CG by reducing grass growth. RG reached significant higher yields in dry matter (10,561 kg ha-1), net energy lactation (68,359 MJ ha-1) and crude protein (1,916 kg ha-1) as CG (7,753 kg DM ha-1, 52,792 MJ NEL ha-1 and...

In this study, the impact of grazing in comparison to cutting on yield and forage feeding value at permanent grassland swards was investigated. A six-year trial (2007- 2012) was established at the Institute of Organic Farming of AREC Raumberg- Gumpenstein to test four types of permanent grassland uses (1: annual change between cutting and grazing; 2: four times cutting year-1; 3: cut of the first growth following grazing; 4: grazing). There were found no significant differences in the DM yield between the four variants. The significant highest crude protein yield (over 1,843 kg ha-1) was found in the grazing system. Energy concentration of grazed swards reached 7 MJ NEL kg-1 DM during spring and decreased to 6.2 MJ NEL kg-1 DM during summer. Crude...

Starz, Walter; Steinwidder, Andreas; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes.
Poa pratensis is one of the most important grass species in Alpine region with a high protection against weed infestation. The most difficulties for an establishment in permanent grassland are a steady juvenile growth and a low competitive strength during this time. In a four-year (2008-2011) field trial the establishment of P. pratensis using continuous grazing in permanent grassland was investigated at the organic grassland and dairy farm of the AREC Raumberg-Gumpenstein. Variant 1 was used under a three times cutting management. During two years of continuous grazing (2008-2009), variant 2 was treated without reseeding and variant 3 was reseeded with P. pratensis variety BALIN three times (each time with 10 kg ha-1) in 2008. In 2010 and 2011 all three...

Forage feeding value of continuous grazed sward on organic permanent grassland Organic Eprints
Starz, Walter; Steinwidder, Andreas; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes.
Continuous grazing provides low-cost forage with a high feeding value for milk and beef production and is a suitable pasture system in organic farming. To assess the forage feeding value of continuously grazed sward, a 3-field trial was carried out under harsh east Alpine conditions (680 m altitude, 7°C average temperature, 1000 mm annual precipitation). Forage contents of net energy (6.3-7.0 MJ NEL kg-1 DM) and crude protein (202-236 g kg-1 DM) varied on a high level during the vegetation period. Moreover, amounts of crude fibre (176-243 g kg-1 DM) and neutral detergent fibre (373-475 g kg-1 DM) were within the recommended range for ruminates. In conclusion, continuous grazing as a possible organic grassland use under harsh climate conditions can be...
