A suitable metocean hindcast database for the design of Marine energy converters ArchiMer
Boudiere, Edwige; Maisondieu, Christophe; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Accensi, Mickael; Pineau-guillou, Lucia; Lepesqueur, Jeremy.
Resource assessment as well as characterisation of site climatologies for the design of Marine Energy Converters requires data bases allowing an accurate description of the environmental forcing, especially waves and sea-states, on a high resolution grid. As a support to its research activities related to the development of marine renewable energies, Ifremer is building a specific hindcast data set for the assessment of sea-states climatologies. The main features of this database, built running an up-to-date configuration of the WaveWatch III® wave model on an unstructured grid extending from the South of the North Sea to the Bay of Biscay are presented here. Attention is given to the parameterization and forcing as well as the specific output data sets...

Atmospheric storm surge modeling methodology along the French (Atlantic and English Channel) coast ArchiMer
Muller, Heloise; Pineau-guillou, Lucia; Idier, Deborah; Ardhuin, Fabrice.
Storm surge modeling and forecast are the key issues for coastal risk early warning systems. As a general objective, this study aims at improving high-frequency storm surge variations modeling within the PREVIMER system (www.previmer.org), along the French Atlantic and English Channel coasts. The paper focuses on (1) sea surface drag parameterization and (2) uncertainties induced by the meteorological data quality. The modeling is based on the shallow-water version of the model for applications at regional scale (MARS), with a 2-km spatial resolution. The model computes together tide and surge, allowing properly taking into account tide-surge interactions. To select the most appropriate parameterization for the study area, a sensitivity analysis on sea...

Development and validation of a sediment dynamics model within a coastal operational oceanographic system ArchiMer
Cayocca, Florence; Verney, Romaric; Petton, Sebastien; Caillaud, Matthieu; Dussauze, Morgan; Dumas, Franck; Le Roux, Jean-francois; Pineau-guillou, Lucia; Le Hir, Pierre.
The rising interest in environmental and ecosystem dynamics have lead coastal oceanographers to not only investigate the “traditional” physical parameters describing the ocean state and its dynamics (e.g. temperature, salinity, currents, water levels in coastal areas), but to also account for the dynamics of parameters describing its biogeochemical components. To that end, MARS3D regional and coastal modelling system has been coupled to ecosystem modules (ECO-MARS3D, ECO3M) as well as sediment dynamics modules (MARS3D-SEDIM): sediment, nutrient and primary production contents can be considered as the lower level environment and ecosystem descriptors of the “biogeochemical” ocean. Early investments into physical and biological analysis at the regional scale...

Génération de bases de données océano-météorologiques pour l'élaboration de climatologies adaptées au dimensionnement des structures en mer ArchiMer
Boudiere, Edwige; Maisondieu, Christophe; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Accensi, Mickael; Pineau-guillou, Lucia; Lepesqueur, Jeremy.
The number of Marine Renewable Energy projects has rapidly raised over the last decades. Those require a refined description of environmental conditions, such as sea states, for resource assessments as well as for the conception of the Marine Energy Converters. Engineering studies require long-term data sets so as to assess temporal variability and extreme events of sea states at the scale of the implantation sites.,As a support to its research studies on Marine Renewable Energy, Ifremer is building a specific hindcast database, running the wave model WAVEWATCH III® on an unstructured grid. The wave model extends over the area from the South of the North Sea to the Bay of Biscay with a high spatial resolution and covers a 16 years period from 1996 to 2012....

Large-scale changes of the semidiurnal tide along North Atlantic coasts from 1846 to 2018 ArchiMer
Pineau-guillou, Lucia; Lazure, Pascal; Woppelmann, Guy.
We investigated the long-term changes of the principal tidal component M2 over the North Atlantic coasts, from 1846 to 2018. We analysed 9 tide gauges with time series starting no later than 1920. The longest is Brest with 165 years of observations. We carefully processed the data, particularly to remove the 18.6-year nodal modulation. We found that M2 variations are consistent at all the stations in the North East Atlantic (Newlyn, Brest, Cuxhaven), whereas some discrepancies appear in the North West Atlantic. The changes started long before the XXth century, and are not linear. The trends vary from a station to another; they are overall positive, up to 0.7 mm/yr. Since 1990, the trends switch from positive to negative values. Concerning the possible...

Surface currents are poorly known over most of the world's oceans. Satellite-borne Doppler wave and current scatterometers (DWaCSs) are among the proposed techniques to fill this observation gap. The Sea surface KInematics Multiscale (SKIM) proposal is the first satellite concept built on a DWaCS design at near-nadir angles and was demonstrated to be technically feasible as part of the European Space Agency Earth Explorer program. This article describes preliminary results from a field experiment performed in November 2018 off the French Atlantic coast, with sea states representative of the open ocean and a well-known tide-dominated current regime, as part of the detailed design and feasibility studies for SKIM. This experiment comprised airborne...

Lecornu, Fabrice; Pineau-guillou, Lucia; Dumas, Franck; Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Gohin, Francis; Menesguen, Alain.
Our coastal zones are subject to increasing anthropogenic pressure. Monitoring systems are required to protect them, prevent or mitigate risks and to ensure a sustainable management of their resources. PREVIMER is a partnership between Ifremer (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea), SHOM (French Hydrographic Office) and several major French institutions (www.previmer.org). It provides coastal observations, analyses and 4 days forecasts for the French coasts of the English Channel, Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea: currents, water levels, waves, temperature, salinity, turbidity, nutrients and plankton concentrations. The service includes information based on in situ, satellite observations and numerical simulations. PREVIMER products...

PREVIMER: Improvement of surge, sea level and currents modelling ArchiMer
Pineau-guillou, Lucia; Dumas, Franck; Theetten, Sebastien; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Lecornu, Fabrice; Le Roux, Jean-francois; Idier, Deborah; Muller, Heloise; Pedreros, Rodrigo.
The pre-operational system PREVIMER provides coastal observations and forecasts along French coasts. It provides, among other variables, currents, sea levels, surges and waves. This paper describes the development and validation of a high temporal (15 minutes) and spatial (250 m) resolution modeling system, based on MARS hydrodynamic model (Lazure and Dumas 2008), along the Atlantic and English Channel coasts. Models benefi t from experiments developed during the PREVIMER project by: (1) taking better into account wind and wave actions (improving surface drag coeffi cient parameterization), (2) taking into account a better meteorological forcing (improving spatial and temporal meteorological resolution). These high resolution models have been integrated in...

Prévision opérationnelle des niveaux de la mer, surcotes et décotes sur les côtes de la Manche et de l’Atlantique ArchiMer
Pineau-guillou, Lucia; Theetten, Sebastien; Dumas, Franck; Lecornu, Fabrice; Idier, Deborah.

Strong winds in a coupled wave-atmosphere model during a North Atlantic storm event: evaluation against observations ArchiMer
Pineau-guillou, Lucia; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Bouin, Marie-noelle; Redelsperger, Jean-luc; Chapron, Bertrand; Bidlot, Jean-raymond; Quilfen, Yves.
Strong winds may be biased in atmospheric models. Here the ECMWF coupled wave-atmosphere model is used (1) to evaluate strong winds against observations, (2) to test how alternative wind stress parameterizations could lead to a more accurate model. For the period of storms Kaat and Lilli (23 to 27 January 2014), we compared simulated winds with in-situ – moored buoys and platforms - and satellite observations available from the North Atlantic. Five wind stress parameterizations were evaluated. The first result is that moderate simulated winds (5-20 m s-1) match with all observations. However, for strong winds (above 20 m s-1), mean differences appear, as much as -7 m s-1 at 30 m s-1. Significant differences also exist between observations, with buoys and...
