In this short communication, we present a multidisciplinaty study of sedimentary records collected from a deep-sea interfluve proximal to the mouths of major northwestern Madagascan rivers. For the last 60 years, the seafloor has been repeatedly disturbed by the deposition of organic rich, tropical, terrestrial sediments causing marked reductions in benthic biodiversity. Increased soil erosion due to local land-use, deforestation and intensifying tropical cyclones are potential causes for this sedimentary budget and biodiversity shift. Our marine sedimentary records indicate that until now, these conditions have not occurred within the region for at least 20,000 years. |

Basically, a dredge is a bottom-towed gear and consists of a metal frame with a blade or teeth, to dig into the sediment and extract the shelled molluscs, and a mesh bag to collect the catch. Whereas hand dredging is observed on some intertidal beds (Donax trunculus in France), the use of dredge generally needs a fishing boat. There is a great diversity of dredge types, with specific designs used to target different species in particular beds: Manual dredges for Donax (Donax trunculus), Warty venus (Venus verrucosa) and clams (Venerupis pulastra, Ruditapes sp) Dredges for King scallops (Pecten maximus) Dredges for Warty venus (Venus verrucosa) Dredge for Queen scallops (black and white, Chlamys varia and Chlamys opercularia) Dredges for small... |

This project systematically examines the bivalve dredging process and its physiological and ecological consequences. The literature on ecology and population dynamics of the target species, dredge design and fisheries and the environmental effects of dredging and selectivity of dredging is reviewed. A programme of experimental work, both laboratory and field studies is described in scallop and clam dredge fisheries in European waters; scallop species (UK, France) Pecten maximus, Aequipecten opercularis, clam species (Italy; N. Adriatic) Chamelea gallina, clam species (Portugal) Spisula solida, Donax trunculus, Callista chione. Selectivity measures and dredge design are examined for their consequences in terms of environmental effects. Studies included... |

In the 1960s, with a drop in the king scallop stock, the clam became a substitution resource with productions of over 400 tonnes. The drop in the production until the disruption of the fishery in the 1980s is the combined consequence of the increase of the fishing capacities with an unfavourable populating demographic strategy. Large deposits are fairly rare. In 7 years, only one age group, born in 1971, withstood the fishery. Many age groups of satisfactory abundance, from the end of the 80s on, combined with a total disruption of the fishery for a few years, lead to a recovery of the stock with fishing levels equivalent (today) to those of the 1950s. The clam, though less iconic than the king scallop in the local context, has now been for a number of... |

A drop in the performance of banded carpet shell Paphia rhomboïdes fishing in the Saint Brieuc Bay has been witnessed by the Saint-Brieuc Bay banded carpet shell professional fishermen since 2002. The Ifremer has been asked to assess the state of the banded carpet shell deposit in this fishing area. This mission report presents the results of the banded carpet shell stock evaluation campaign carried out in collaboration with professional fishermen in May 2006 on board the "Narval Bretagne". The results of the direct local small bivalve evaluations of the "Bivalve 2002" campaign conducted in May 2002 on board the research vessel Thalia in the same area are provided as a benchmark. |

During the 1950s, the clam played only a bit part in the local maritime context. It was the focus of a different fleet than the king scallop fleet, with a lesser fishing capacity (fleet from the Relecq Kerhuon) and an average annual catch of around 150 tonnes. In the 1960s, with a drop in the king scallop stock, the clam became a substitution resource with productions of over 400 tonnes. The first stages of this evolution are detailed by Le Gall (1969) and Piboubès (1973). Slowly, the fleet developed (from the 70s on, with the progressive arrival of seaweed boats in the fishery) The drop of the production until the disruption of the fishery in the 1980s is the combined consequence of the increase of the fishing capacities with an unfavourable populating... |

The exploited stocks of wild bivalves (common cockles, dog cockles, clams, and spisules) in the Norman-Breton gulf vary according to the fishing activity and the environmental conditions. Different studies, carried out by the Ifremer in this region (between 1982 and 1998), enabled the evaluation of the stocks available for fishing as well as the collection of data on these species (demographic structure, growth...). For more information on the 1993-1994 studies and a presentation of the site and the fishery please refer to the reports by Berthou, 1987 and Noël et al, 1995. The bivalve expedition conducted in May 2002, enabled us to update the data on the populations of dog cockles and banded carpet shells, then of spisules and clams, using the same... |

Offshore archives retrieved from marine/lacustrine environments receiving sediment from large river systems are valuable Quaternary continental records. In the present study, we reconstruct the Danube River activity at the end of the last glacial period based on sedimentological, mineralogical and geochemical analyses performed on long-piston cores from the north-west Black Sea margin. Our data suggest that the Danube River produced hyperpycnal floods throughout the ca. 33-17 ka period. Four main periods of enhanced Danube flood frequency, each of 1.5-3 kyr duration, are recorded at ca. 32.5 30.5 ka (equivalent to the first part of Heinrich Stadial HS 3), at ca. 29-27.5 ka (equivalent to Greenland Stadial 4), at ca. 25.3-23.8 ka (equivalent to HS 2) and at... |

Inactive and mostly elongated pockmarks of 100–200 m in dimension were recently discovered on the South Aquitaine Margin continental slope. They are distributed at water depths greater than 350 m in both interfluve and sediment-wave areas, and are strongly controlled by the sedimentary morphology and architecture. Water column and seafloor backscatter and sub-bottom profiler data do not exhibit present-day or past gas evidence, e.g., massive and continuous gas releases at the seabed and fossil methane-derived authigenic carbonates. It is thus proposed that the pockmarks originated from a shallow source and result from relatively recent and short-duration gas or water expulsion events. Former near-bottom currents may have contributed to the elongation of... |
