Anticipating future changes in marine social‐ecological systems (MSES) several decades into the future is essential in the context of accelerating global change. This is challenging in situations where actors do not share common understandings, practices, or visions about the future. We introduce a dedicated scenario method for the development of MSES scenarios in a participatory context. The objective is to allow different actors to jointly develop scenarios which contain their multiple visions of the future. The method starts from four perspectives: “fisheries management,” “ecosystem,” “ocean climate,” and “global context and governance” for which current status and recent trends are summarized. Calanus and environment in the eastern North Atlantic. 1. Spatial and temporal patterns of C. finmarchicus and C. helgolandicus 5

Spatial and temporal patterns of Calanusfinmarchicus and C. helgolandicus (Copepoda, Calanoida) were investigated in the northeast Atlantic and the North Sea from 1962 to 1992. The seasonal cycle of C.finmarchicus is characterised by a single peak of abundance in spring, whereas the seasonal cycle of C. helgolandicus shows 2 abundance maxima, one in spring and one in autumn. The former species mainly occurs in northern regions (limited by the 55*N parallel in the North Sea and by the 50*N parallel in the open ocean). The latter species shows 2 types of spatial patterns, occurring in the Celtic Sea during spring and in the Celtic Sea plus the North Sea in autumn. The influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on 2 major zooplankton species ofthe eastern North Atlantic and the North Sea, Calanus finmarchicus and C. helgolandicus (Copepoda, Calanoida), was investigated. Our results confirm that from December to April, west wind stress (WWS) intensity and temperature are strongly related to the NAO. If these results were expected, more striking were the close relationships between NAO and Calanus species abundance. Characterising the temporal variability of the spatial distribution of animals: an application to seabirds at sea 5

Understanding the patterns of spatial and temporal variations in animal abundance is a fundamental question in ecology. Here, we propose a method to quantify temporal variations in animal spatial patterns and to determine the spatial scale at which such temporal variability is expressed. The methodology extends from the approach proposed by Taylor (Taylor, L. R. 1961. Aggregation, variance and the mean. Disentangling the relative effects of these factors has been a major goal of fisheries science for both conceptual and management reasons. Detecting hydrological landscapes over the Bay of Biscay continental shelf in spring 5

A complex set of hydrodynamical structures co-exist over the Bay of Biscay continental shelf. These structures, which can spread over a limited spatial range (10s of km) and last for periods ranging from days to months, influence the rates and nature of biological production. They need to be accurately described before the mechanisms linking hydrodynamics to production can be unraveled. Such description generally requires not only 3D observations of hydrological fields (temperature, salinity, density), but also a description of how these fields vary with time. Direct assessment of anchovy by the Pelgas06 acoustic survey 5

An acoustic survey was carried out in the bay of Biscay from May 1st to May 30th on board the French research vessel Thalassa. The objective of PELGAS06 survey was to study the abundance and distribution of pelagic fish in the Bay of Biscay. The target species were mainly anchovy and sardine and were considered in a multi-specific context. The results have to be used during ICES working groups in charge of the assessment of sardine, anchovy, mackerel and horse mackerel and in the frame of the Ifremer fisheries ecology program "resources variability"

The spatial extent of small pelagic fish spawning habitat is influenced by environmental factors and by the state of the adult population. In return, the configuration of spawning habitat affects recruitment and therefore the future structure of the adult population. Interannual changes in spatial patterns of spawning reflect variations in adult population structures and their environment. Potential spawning habitat is defined as the area where environmental conditions are suitable for spawning to occur. Spawning adult data from the first quarter (January-March) of the International Bottom Trawl Survey have been used to study the inter-annual variability of the potential spawning habitat of North Sea plaice from 1980 to 2007. Long-term time series in Calanus finmarchicus abundance - A question of space? 5

Year-to-year changes in abundance of the copepod Calanus finmarchicus in the North Atlantic are studied by means of the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR). Using data collected during the years 1962 to 1974, the spatial heterogeneity of long-term trends is studied by numerical analysis: Mantel test, Mantel correlogram, and spatio-temporal clustering. Results reveal that (1) interannual changes of C. finmarchicus abundance are spatially autocorrelated; (2) the spatial structures have a radius varying between 400 and 1100 km; and (3) there is a high variability in the annual changes observed between the different zones detected by clustering. Modelling chance and necessity in natural systems 5

Nearly 30 years ago, emerged the concept of deterministic chaos. With it came sensitivity to initial conditions, nonlinearities, and strange attractors. This constituted a paradigm shift that profoundly altered how numerical modellers approached dynamic systems. It also provided an opportunity to resolve a situation of mutual misunderstanding between scientists and non-scientists about uncertainties and predictability in natural systems. Our proposition is that this issue can be addressed in an original way which involves modelling based on the principles of chance and necessity (CaN). The spatial distributions of spawning population of North Sea plaice and whiting were studied using geostatistical analyses. Variograms were computed each year since 1980 on abundance data of spawning adults using the first quarter data from the International Bottom Trawl Survey. Maps of spatial distribution of spawning adults were produced using kriging interpolation. For both species, distributions of spawning adults were in agreement with historical spawning grounds previously described from location of their eggs.
