A review of capture and post-release mortality of elasmobranchs ArchiMer
Ellis, J. R.; Phillips, S. R. Mccully; Poisson, Francois.
There is a need to better understand the survivorship of discarded fishes, both for commercial stocks and species of conservation concern. Within European waters, the landing obligations that are currently being phased in as part of the European Union's reformed common fisheries policy means that an increasing number of fish stocks, with certain exceptions, should not be discarded unless it can be demonstrated that there is a high probability of survival. This study reviews the various approaches that have been used to examine the discard survival of elasmobranchs, both in terms of at-vessel mortality (AVM) and post-release mortality (PRM), with relevant findings summarized for both the main types of fishing gear used and by taxonomic group. Discard...

Aerial surveys of bluefin tuna in the Western Mediterranean sea: retrospective, prospective, perspective ArchiMer
Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Farrugio, Henri; Poisson, Francois; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
While the current stock status of bluefin tuna (BFT) has been considered as declining, there remain considerable data limitations for its stock assessment in the Mediterranean Sea. The collection of fishery-independent data reveals to be crucial to compensate for the lack of Mediterranean purse seine CPUE indices as well as to overcome a potential halt in the bluefin tuna fishery that would impede the monitoring of the stock and the comparison to reference points. Here we present a retrospective of aerial surveys that have been carried out since 2000. It includes the protocol as well as a retrospective of temporal and spatial distribution of detected schools. We then propose several perspectives that could improve the data collection method itself and the...

Biophysical and biochemical properties of an unusual birnavirus pathogenic for rotifers ArchiMer
Comps, Michel; Mari, Jocelyne; Poisson, Francois; Bonami, Jean-robert.
A cytoplasmic dsRNA virus, rotifer birnavirus (RBV), has recently been isolated from the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and is associated with a high mortality rate. Histologically, the viral lesions consist of characteristic inclusions, particularly amorphous dense bodies containing occluded particles. Purified virions are about 59 nm in diameter, single-shelled and display four capsomers per edge. The purified virions have a buoyant density of 1.290 (full particles) and 1.250 (empty particles) in CsCI gradients. Four major structural polypeptides of Mrs 60K, 52K, 33K and 27K were detected by SDS-PAGE. The genome is composed of two linear segments of dsRNA with Mrs of 2.45 x 106 and 2.31 × 106; additionally, small circular ssRNA molecules were detected by...

Collaborative research: Development of a manual on elasmobranch handling and release best practices in tropical tuna purse-seine fisheries ArchiMer
Poisson, Francois; Seret, Bernard; Vernet, Anne-lise; Goujon, Michel; Dagorn, Laurent.
The reduction of by-catch mortality is an objective of the ecosystem approach to fisheries and a request made by consumers. Elasmobranchs, an important component of the French tropical tuna purse seine fishery by-catch, are currently thrown back into the sea. Fishers interact with various types of elasmobranchs that range widely in size, weight and shape, and could pose various degrees of danger to the crew. A diversity of discarding practices within the fleet were reported, some practices were considered suitable, others needed to be adapted and improved and others simply had to be banned. The majority of the crews were likely to improve their handling practices if they were presented with practical suggestions that were quick and easy. Combining...

Effect of pelagic longline bait type on species selectivity: a global synthesis of evidence ArchiMer
Gilman, Eric; Chaloupka, Milani; Bach, Pascal; Fennell, Hannah; Hall, Martin; Musyl, Michael; Piovano, Susanna; Poisson, Francois; Song, Liming.
Fisheries can profoundly affect bycatch species with ‘slow’ life history traits. Managing bait type offers one tool to control species selectivity. Different species and sizes of marine predators have different prey, and hence bait, preferences. This preference is a function of a bait’s chemical, visual, acoustic and textural characteristics and size, and for seabirds the effect on hook sink rate is also important. We conducted a global meta-analysis of existing estimates of the relative risk of capture on different pelagic longline baits. We applied a Bayesian random effects meta-analytic regression modelling approach to estimate overall expected bait-specific catch rates. For blue shark and marine turtles, there were 34% (95% HDI: 4–59%) and 60% (95%...

Effects of lunar cycle and fishing operations on longline-caught pelagic fish: fishing performance, capture time, and survival of fish ArchiMer
Poisson, Francois; Gaertner, Jean-claude; Taquet, Marc; Durbec, Jean-pierre; Bigelow, Keith.
Commercial longline fishing data were analyzed and experiments were conducted with gear equipped with hook timers and time-depth recorders in the Reunion Island fishery (21 degrees 5'S lat., 53 degrees 28'E long.) to elucidate direct and indirect effects of the lunar cycle and other operational factors that affect catch rates, catch composition, fish behavior, capture time, and fish survival. Logbook data from 1998 through 2000, comprising 2009 sets, indicated that swordfish (Xiphias gladius) catch-per unit of effort (CPUE) increased during the first and last quarter of the lunar phase, whereas albacore (Thunnus alalunga) CPUE was highest during the full moon. Swordfish were caught rapidly after the longline was set and, like bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus),...

EU project for the Provision of Scientific Advice for the Purpose of the implementation of the EUPOA sharks: a brief overview of the results for Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Murua, Hilario; Santos, M. N.; Chavance, Pierre; Amande, J; Abascal, Francisco J.; Ariz, Javier; Bach, Pascal; Korta, M; Poisson, Francois; Coelho, R; Seret, Bernard.
The objective of this project was to obtain scientific advice for the purpose of implementing the EUPOA on sharks as regards the facilitation of monitoring fisheries and shark stock assessment on a species-specific level in the high seas. The study was focused on major elasmobranch species caught by both artisanal and industrial large pelagic fisheries on the High Seas of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific area, which are currently monitored and potentially managed by respective Tuna RFMOs. Estimated “potential” shark species catch in the Indian Ocean is around 160,000 t for 22,000 t. presently declared (7 times higher than declared). Considering all sharks that are not reported at species level, the total amount of shark declared was around 100,000 tons...

Genome scans discriminate independent populations of the blue shark Prionace glauca ArchiMer

The blue shark Prionace glauca is a cosmopolitan species that inhabits all oceans worldwide except the poles. Several IUCN regional assessments have classified   it as Near Threatened, mostly due to overfishing. Previous genetic studies that have used classical genetic markers failed to reject the hypothesis that the species is a single worldwide population (panmixia). As such, the blue shark was proposed to be an archetype of the ‘grey zone of population differentiation’, named to signify those cases common in the marine realm, where the split among population is too recent or too faint to be detected using classical genetic markers. Here, samples collected across the majority of the global range of blue shark were sequenced (using a specific genome scan...
