The gold swift Phymatopus hecta in acidified forests in the southern part of the Netherlands (Lepidoptera: Hepialidae) The gold swift Phymatopus hecta (Linnaeus, 1758) is a small moth which occurs in woods on peaty and sandy soils. The moth belongs to the family of the Hepialidae of which the young caterpillars feed on the roots of herbaceous plants. It was assumed that the species is declining in the Netherlands. During a research undertaken in 2004 and 2005 the species appears to be common in woods in a large area in the south of the Netherlands. Based on observations from other researchers the species seems to be fairly common on the sandy and peaty soils in the middle, east en north of the Netherlands. The most important host plant is the broad... |

The emperor moth Saturnia pavonia in the southern part of the Netherlands: distribution, phenology and food (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) Saturnia pavonia is a large and beautiful moth. It was thought that the species was becoming rare in the Netherlands. In the period 1986-2006 the species was surveyed in the province of Noord-Brabant and the northern and middle part of the province of Limburg. It was shown that the emperor moth was present in 40% of the 250 investigated 5 km squares, especially on heath land and in forests. It became clear that the species, however conspicuous in appearance, has a largely hidden lifestyle. Although the males can be seen flying over heath land, most are hidden in the vegetation. Furthermore the males fly only in the... |

A discovery in De Peel: the noctuid moth Xestia stigmatica new for the Netherlands (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Xestia stigmatica is present all over Europe, but was not recorded in the Netherlands. In 2001 a single female was caught at light, in the commune of Deurne (province of Noord-Brabant). The site is located in De Peel, a large peat area, which has been largely exploited in the past. Thanks to huge efforts to find more specimens, a second female was caught at syrup in 2007, close to the first site. We tentatively consider the two females vagrants, although it cannot be excluded that a small population exists near Deurne. |
