An experimental/numerical study of the catch weight influence on trawl behavior ArchiMer

Measurements at sea during fishing trials on bottom trawl have revealed that the geometry of the trawl is affected by the catch. A series of 37 hauls of around 3 h were carried out during the French EFFICHALUT project. The aim of this project was to carry out improvements on the fishing gear in order to reduce energy consumption. For this project, numerous sensors were used: for bridle tension, door spread, vertical opening, and door attitude. The measurements show quite clearly that the door spread decreases and the bridle tension increases during most of the hauls. The door spread decreased by 1.35 m/h, with a standard deviation of 1.98 m/h while the top bridle tension increased by 47 kg/h, with a standard deviation of 59 kg/h. The mean catch per haul...

L’objectif de ces essais est une calibration de la houle du bassin de Brest et vérification du fonctionnement du batteur et de sa commande. Différentes houles régulières et irrégulières ont été réalisées afin de vérifier que les houles générées étaient en accord avec les houles que l'on souhaitait obtenir. Cela a également permis de vérifier le bon fonctionnement de la sonde Quasar 1 recettée peu de temps avant.

Bassin d’essais de Brest. Immersion d’un prototype Fluorimètre ArchiMer

Cable length optimization for trawl fuel consumption reduction ArchiMer

A numerical method for optimization of the cable lengths in trawls with respect to the ratio between the estimated trawl drag and the predicted catch efficiency is developed and applied. The trawl cables of interest are warps, bridles, headline and footrope. The optimization algorithm applies an ordered sequential process changing one cable length at the time. It is assumed in the predictions that the catch efficiency of the trawl is proportional with the trawl mouth area. In a case study optimizing a bottom trawl used on a research vessel by applying the new method it is predicted that it would be possible to reduce the ratio between trawl drag and catch efficiency by up to 46% by optimizing the cable lengths. The FIFB working group of ICES Fish Capture Committee was hosted in La Coruna, Galicia, Spain from 20th through 24 of April 1998. Prior to this session, a study group met on April 18 and 19 to discuss on the selective grids. Finally, a joint session of both FTFB and FAST groups was held on 25 April. The study group was attended by some 17 scientists of various institutes, the FTFB working group gathered 43 attendees and the joint session 20. Several trends and general remarks are to be noted. As regards the grid group, it is obvious that the selective grids tends to come into general use ; their use may even become imposed. Le comportement hydrodynamique des structures poreuses utilisées pour la pêche (chaluts, nasses, cages, seines) est aujourd’hui encore mal connu. Les chaluts étant responsables de la plus grosse part de la consommation de fuel en action de pêche, ce projet a pour objectif de développer un outil de conception de chalut permettant de réduire au maximum la traînée de l’engin.L’outil ainsi développé devrait permettre d’obtenir un gain de l’ordre de 20% sur la traînée d’un chalut, tout en conservant une efficacité en pêche comparable. Les développements réalisés pourront également être étendus pour étudier les différents types de structures poreuses utilisées pour la pêche et mieux appréhender le développement de dispositifs de sélectivité.

The quick evolution of fish farming in Europe, and its development towards the open sea needs suitable farming tools. These tools must withstand the difficult sea states, but they must be easy to use, well adapted to the fish farming and not too much expensive. This book helps the design of such tools. It defines the solicitations of the sea on all the structures, and presents rules and methods to control these solicitations. Since 1983, the research on the optimal conception of FADs in Martinique was particularly focused on the improvement of their resistance to different maritime or human aggressions. Following several experimentations made with different types of fads, the choice was brought on light devices anchored in 1 500 to 2 000 m depths and an experimental approach was conducted to identify the causes of loss of fads and to attempt to modelize their hydrodynamic behaviour with relation to the sea conditions. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect on Mullus barbatus (red mullet) codend selectivity by increasing the codend mesh size or reducing the number of meshes in the codend circumference. This was performed through experimental sea trials and computer simulations. The sea trials were carried out in the Adriatic Sea using a polyamide codend in order to assess its selectivity, to record morphological (height, width and length) and population size structure parameters of red mullet (Mullus barbatus). The evaluation of the mesh resistance to opening of fishing nets is an important issue in assessing the selectivity of trawls by numerical methods. Sala et al. (2007) proposed a method using a relatively expensive experimental device ensuring the 2D deformation of net sample. De la Prada and Gonzales (2015) proposed a simple uni-axial experimental set-up, which stretches a sample in the transverse direction of the meshes while leaving free its deformation in the normal direction. The evaluation of the mesh opening stiffness of fishing nets is an important issue in assessing the selectivity of trawls. It appeared that a larger bending rigidity of twines decreases the mesh opening and could reduce the escapement of fish. Nevertheless, netting structure is complex. A netting is made up of braided twines made of polyethylene or polyamide. These twines are tied with non-symmetrical knots. Thus, these assemblies develop contact-friction interactions. Mise à Disposition du bassin de Brest. Essais de Sondeur Simrad EK80 ArchiMer
