Runner cultivars are widely demanded by peanut farmers because of their high oil and grain productions. As those are late cycles, the management is limited in environments with water restriction. For improvement of runner genotypes to these environments is necessary to identify genotypes adapted and the knowledge of genetic divergence is quite relevant to assist the breeding procedures. In this work, ten morphological and agronomic traits were measured on 13 runner peanut genotypes grown in sandy loam textured soils during the rainy season in three environments on Brazilian Northeast region. These measurements included harvest index (%), main stem height (cm), 100 seed weight, 100 pod weight, pod length (mm), number of pod/plant, blooming (days after... |

Germplasm collections are the main raw material for breeding programs. Peanut is an important oilseed that serves to oil and food markets. The identification of early-mature genotypes and earliness adds benefits to crop production as it minimizes the costs of management and the losses of pod production due to occurrence of dry periods. In this paper, we estimate the genetic divergence in 77 peanut accessions (subsp. fastigiata), using three clustering methods, in order to identify early-mature genotypes and earliness for food market. The accessions were grown in field and phenotyped for 19 qualitative and quantitative traits. The Tocher methodology was employed for discriminating Valencia accessions. Both UPGMA and Principal Components Analysis (PCA) were... |

Seed dormancy is a temporary replacement state observed in some higher plants, which prevents germination under unfavorable conditions. In several species, dormancy process is triggered by hormonal factors, initiated by ABA and precursor enzymes. In this work, we investigated the relationship between dormancy and the expression of ARP, DMR1, and NCED genes in upright and runner peanut seeds. Eight dormancy-contrasting genotypes were previously phenotyped based on germination traits, during three storage periods. Expression of ARP, DMR1 and NCED transcripts was analyzed by qRT-PCR, from endosperm and embryo tissues. Higher expression of NCED and ARP were found in embryo tissues from runner genotypes, IAC Caiapo and LGoPE-06, confirming findings in... |

The Agave genus is composed of about 200 species, but the cultivation of sisal for fiber production in Brazil is restricted to two species: Agave sisalana and Agave fourcroydes, both have several accessions with wide variability. The collection of Agave of Embrapa has 37 accessions maintained in situ and periodically evaluated agronomical traits. Most of these accessions have phenotypic similarities, although they differ in fiber quality, which are widely used for commercial purposes. The identification of promising accesses contributes to the advance in improvement works, focusing on commercial indication. In order to estimate the genetic divergence of this collection, a cluster analyses was performed based on Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) markers... |

ABSTRACT: Two multivariate methods were adopted to classify salt-tolerant cotton genotypes based on their growth and physiological traits. The genotypes were cultivated in a greenhouse and subjected to 45 days of irrigation with saline water from the V4 phase onwards. Irrigation was performed with saline water with electrical conductivity (ECw) of 6.0 dS m-1. A factorial-randomized block design was adopted with nine cultivars, two treatments of ECw (0.6 as the control, and 6.0 dS m-1), and four replicates. Plants were evaluated for growth, gas exchange, and photosynthesis. The data were statistically analyzed using univariate and multivariate methods. For the latter, non-hierarchical (principal component, PC) and hierarchical (UPGMA) models were used for... |

Peanut is an affordable legume known for its nutritional value and phenolic content. The kernel and skin of 14 peanut genotypes contrasting in drought tolerance had their phenolic profiles determined and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activity evaluated. Firstly, temperature and % EtOH to extract antioxidant phenolic compounds were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The optimized extraction conditions, 60 ºC and 35% EtOH for kernels and 40 ºC and 60% EtOH for skins, were further adopted, and phenolic compounds were identified and quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionizationquadrupole- time of flight-mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography with... |

Runner peanuts are known for their high pod yields, but are late to flowering and pod maturation, and the optimal combination of these traits with pod yield is widely desired for peanut improvement. Selection indexes are useful tools for crop breeding. In this study, seven selection indexes combined with economic weights were used in a peanut population to estimate the superior and balanced genetic gains. Eleven runner genotypes were grown in three environments in the Northeast region of Brazil under a randomized block design with five replicates. The following indices were used: Smith and Hazel, Pesek and Baker, Williams, Elston, Subandi, Cruz, and Mulamba & Mock, in combination with the following economic weights: weight 1 for all evaluated traits,... |

Peanut production is growing annually in Brazil, but with frequent droughts throughout the country, it is necessary to identify an earliness germplasm for the improved environmental adaptation of peanuts. Here, a mini-core collection of peanuts was studied to select germplasms for further use in breeding, with a focus on dry environments. Twelve agronomic traits were adopted and later used in multivariate methods based on hierarchical models (UPGMA) and graphical dispersion (canonical variables), which aimed to identify earliness accession clusters. Statistically significant differences were found for most traits, indicating that there was genetic variability among accessions. Multivariate analyses subsequently revealed coherence in the formation of three... |
