| The inclusion of corn-dried distillers? grains (DDG) could be an alternative supplement to increase animal performance, nitrogen efficiency usage (NEU), and decrease enteric methane (CH4) emissions. Our goal was to determine whether DDG could replace a traditional supplement (cottonseed meal) without affecting animal performance, N balance, and CH4 emissions. The experiment was conducted during the forage growing season (December to April), with 15 d adaptation, and a 112 d experimental period. | Esse projeto contemplou avaliações de emissão de metano entérico de ovinos e de fluxo de gases do solo, buscando mensurar e conhecer a dinâmica dos fluxos de gases em sistemas de produção da espécie ovina, mais comumente utilizados por produtores, a fim de calcular, a médio prazo, o balanço de carbono e o potencial de aquecimento global líquido em sistemas de produção de ovinos. Referente a emissão de metano dos animais, objetivou-se avaliar os diferentes sistemas de terminação de cordeiros em pastagem, como e se interferem na emissão de metano por ovinos e produzir valores de emissão para diferentes categorias animais (cordeiros ? ao redor de 60 dias de idade e 25 kg de peso médio - ovelhas desmamadas, ovelhas em lactação e ovelhas gestantes). |

| Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) is a developing region characterized for its importance for global food security, producing 23 and 11% of the global beef and milk production, respectively. The region?s ruminant livestock sector however, is under scrutiny on environmental grounds due to its large contribution to enteric methane (CH4) emissions and influence on global climate change. | O experimento, teve por objetivo avaliar a viabilidade da utilização de cultivares de milheto e híbridos de sorgo-sudão para pastejo de ovinos, sob o efeito de diferentes alturas de resíduo durante o período seco do ano. O experimento foi conduzido no Setor de Forragicultura da FCA V-Unesp/ Jaboticabal, SP, em área de 3056 m2 dividida em 24 parcelas. | An experiment was conducted during the 2001-2002 winter-spring-summer to determine the nitrogen and carbohydrate fractions in Tifton-85 pastures exclusively or overseeded with oats, millet and sorghum-sudangrass hybrids. The treatments were Tifton-85 overseeded with millet + bristle oat; sorghum-sudangrass + bristle oat, on 06/19/2002 and 07/02/2002, respectively; and Tifton-85 (Control). The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with three replications. Nitrogen and carbohydrate fractions were affected by the nitrogen and total carbohydrate contents observed in the pasture overseeded at different seeding times, and by the different growth periods. | Although alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a leguminous herbage widely used in temperate regions as animal feed, there is not much research in tropical regions to develop cultivars adapted to these environmental conditions. The utilization of adapted cultivars with adequate management practices is important to improve productivity, quality and persistence of cultivated pastures. The objectives of this study were to verify the genetic variability among alfalfa cultivars and to rank them using mixed model methodology.
