Com este trabalho se avaliaram o índice de preferência e o efeito inseticida do óleo de carqueja doce (Baccharis Articulata) sobre o caruncho do feijão (Acanthoscelides obtectus). Para a realização do experimento foram utilizados insetos não sexados, com idade entre 20 e 50 dias. O óleo essencial foi extraido da parte aérea da planta pelo método de hidrodestilação. O experimento foi conduzido conforme o delineamneto inteiramente casualizado, com 6 repetições, em esquema fatorial 6 x 3 e 6 x 7 (dose x tempo), respetivamente, para repelência e para atividade inseticida. ABSTRACT Due to the need to improve the quality and safety of foods, chemical methods used to control grain pests have been replaced by alternative methods. For example, modified atmosphere within the storage units has been used. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate maize grain quality and mortality of insects of the species Sitophilus zeamais and Tribolium castaneum in hermetic and non-hermetic environments for 50 days of storage. The hermetic units consisted of polyethylene "bags" with capacity for 60 kg. A cage with 20 adults of each species and 200 g of maize was placed inside each unit. ABSTRACT Rice (Oryza spp.), the most important cereal in the world, is grown and consumed in all continents. Brazil is among the top ten producing countries. Stored grains can be attacked by pests (rodents, insects, fungi and mites) that cause serious qualitative and quantitative losses. Because of these losses, one way to alleviate the problem caused by insects during rice storage is the use of resistant materials (grains). Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate grains from nine different genotypes of rice, in order to identify the existence of materials less susceptible to the attack of Sitophilus zeamais, during 180 days of storage.
