Aquaculture is a source of food, critical and essential to feed humanity and to ensure the world’s food security, and, also is a business that generates economic interest. This is clearly specified in the analysis document of the State of Fisheries and Aquaculture FAO 2016, which exposes that “aquaculture will become the main driver of change in the fisheries and aquaculture sector“. Aquaculture is the productive industrial activity that will play a crucial role in providing solutions to the millennium challenges. Globally this is the main idea that exists under the MedAID EU Horizon 2020 project. Production and productivity of Mediterranean marine fish aquaculture, mainly seabass and seabream, are stagnating or growing slowly as a result of multiple and... |

With the adoption of the Maritime Spatial Planning, European countries have recognized the need to move towards multi-sectoral management of marine resources and space. The present study discusses the problems and opportunities associated with an integrated aquaculture development along the coast of Andalusia through an in-depth analysis of legislative documents and face-to-face interviews. The findings suggest that the management of the aquaculture sector has been characterized by a sectoral approach with little integration into the existing economic activities and socio-cultural context leading to conflicts among fisheries and lack of acceptance from local communities. During the last decade, the regional competent authority and the aquaculture sector... |

Over the last twenty years, extensive shrimp aquaculture has dramatically expanded in the coastal fringe of the Mekong Delta. This occurred primarily at the expense of the mangrove, already severely affected by the Vietnam war. More recently, paddy land has been reclaimed for shrimp aquaculture, a higher currency earner. However, production collapses have frequently occurred and the overall yield has remained far below the expectations for traditional farming. A number of parameters enter into play in the success of this activity, summarized in two questions: i) is the Mekong deltaïc environment - under high continental pressure - suitable to shrimp farming, ii) if not, is it possible to adapt the low technicity of rural poor farmers to reach economic... |
