Effect of faecal soiling on skatole and androstenone occurence in organic entire male pigs Organic Eprints
Thomsen, Rikke; Edward, Sandra E.; Jensen, Bent Borg; Rousing, Tine; Sørensen, Jan Tind.
Production of entire male pigs could be a future strategy for organic pig production. However, production of entire males leads to increased risk of carcasses with elevated boar taint levels. It is hypothesized that skatole levels in pig meat are affected by soiling with manure and that organic housing facilities can increase the risk of pigs being heavily soiled. Therefore the overall aim of this study was to investigate if increased pig and pen soiling increases skatole concentration in entire male pigs. In 5 herds, 1174 organic entire male pigs were reared in four batches across two seasons, summer and winter. Measurements of pig and pen soiling, as well as fat skatole and androstenone concentration and human sensory tests of fat odour, were performed....

Herd health surveillance and management in an integrated HACCP based system Organic Eprints
Sørensen, Jan Tind; Bonde, Marianne; Rousing, Tine; Møller, Steen Henrik.
Future herd health management systems need to focus on precaution and documentation of how product and process failures are prevented. HACCP-based herd health surveillance schemes have been developed for dairy cattle herds, organic pig and egg production systems and for mink production in Denmark. The generic part of such systems, including definition of hazards and risk factors, can be developed through expert opinion panels. The development of sets of control points, alarm values and corrective actions need typically to be farm specific. On-farm systems focusing on broad topics such as animal welfare and food safety tend to grow too big to be operational. It is suggested that a part of the system is controlled through ‘good management practice’ leaving...

Herd-level associations between human–animal relationship, management, fecal cortisol metabolites, and udder health of organic dairy cows Organic Eprints
Ivemeyer, Silvia; Simantke, Christel; Ebinghaus, Asja; Poulsen, Piah; Sorensen, J.T.; Rousing, Tine; Palme, Rupert; Knierim, Ute.
Impact patterns of human–animal relationship HAR) and herd stress level on udder health were investigated in a cross-sectional study on 30 German and Danish organic dairy herds also taking into account influencing factors regarding housing and management. Cow behavior (avoidance distance, tolerance to tactile interaction, release behavior) was assessed in tests, milkers’ behavior recorded during milking, and information about contacts with animals during routine work gathered by interview. Additionally, stockpersons’ attitudes were recorded via questionnaires. Fecal cortisol metabolites were measured in approximately 30 focal cows on each farm and used as a proxy to determine the level of distress within the herd. Management and housing were assessed...

Influence of grouping strategy on welfare measurements of organic entire male pigs Organic Eprints
Thomsen, Rikke; Rousing, Tine; Edwards, Sandra A; Labouriau, R.; Sørensen, Jan Tind.
Alternatives to surgical castration in organic pig production are needed, due to stress and pain caused by castration of male pigs. One alternative, which is in accordance with the values in organic farming, is production of entire male pigs. However, changed behaviour of entires compared to castrates might affect the welfare of the animals. Therefore, in order to produce entire male pigs, without compromised animal welfare, changes in the production system, possible offered by the organic farming system, with e.g. more available space and access to rooting material and roughage, might be a necessity. The aim of this article is to investigate the effect of grouping strategy and group size on levels of mounting behaviour and skin lesions, hypothesising that...

This report reviews the available information on the welfare of pigs when maintained according to organic standards in Europe. It begins by overviewing the populations of organic pigs in different countries at the time of writing (2007), the organic standards which govern their management and the systems in which they are typically kept. It then reviews for each stage in the production cycle (sows, suckling piglets, weaned pigs and fattening pigs) the available literature on health and welfare problems which might be experienced by the animals and the hazards which might give rise to these problems. Finally the report reviews the methods current available for the measurement of pig health and welfare and the extent to which monitoring systems currently...

Økologisk hangriseproduktion: Er dyrevelfærden i orden? Organic Eprints
Thomsen, Rikke; Kongsted, Anne Grete; Rousing, Tine; Bonde, Marianne.

Leeb, Christine; Bochicchio, Davide; Butler, Gillian; Edwards, Sandra; Früh, Barbara; Illmann, Gudrun; Prunier, Armelle; Rousing, Tine; Rudolph, Gwendolyn; Dippel, Sabine.
The CoreOrganic2 research project ProPIG is carried out in 75 organic pig farms in 8 European countries (AT; CH; CZ; DE; DK; FR; IT; UK) to improve animal health, welfare and nutrition using farm customised strategies. For future on-farm application (e.g. advisory/certification activities, which are mostly carried out during one day visits), a practical, automatic recording and feedback tool was developed. This should allow on-farm data collection, import of data into a database and the possibility for benchmarking, including a printed output for the farmer to facilitate immediate discussion of results and improvement strategies. To document not only animal health and welfare, but also integrate diet composition and productivity data, it was important to...
