This work aims to analyze the dynamics of land use change by evaluating the spatio-temporal changes of sugarcane, verified in the period between 2000 and 2015, in the western portion of the São Paulo state. The study area includes parts of the municipalities of Andradina, Muritinga do Sul, Guaraçaí and Pereira Barreto, totaling an area of 1,115 km2. From a multitemporal series of Landsat satellite images of 30 m spatial resolution, the land use information was obtained for the sixteen years, using the Spring software. Land use and land cover maps were analyzed for each date, and the expansion of sugarcane activity in the region was verified, annually, for the period analyzed. As results, it was observed that sugarcane had an expansion in area between the... |

Abstract: The potential of optical remote sensing data to identify, map and monitor croplands is well recognized. However, clouds strongly limit the usefulness of optical imagery for these applications. This paper aims at assessing cloud cover conditions over four states in the tropical and sub-tropical Center-South region of Brazil to guide the development of an appropriate agricultural monitoring system based on Landsat-like imagery. Cloudiness was assessed during overlapping four months periods to match the typical length of crop cycles in the study area. The percentage of clear sky occurrence was computed from the 1 km resolution MODIS Cloud Mask product (MOD35) considering 14 years of data between July 2000 and June 2014. Results showed high... |

Abstract: Nowadays the challenge in agricultural estimates using remote sensing is to produce the estimates and data across the crop season, in near real-time. The aim of this paper is to build an approach capable to produce the crop maps of soybean+maize in near real-time, for Rio Grande do Sul state, using MODIS images. To generate the near real-time crop maps we used the MODIS 16 days composites vegetation index (VI) images of NDVI and EVI. This new approach was called Near Real-Time Crop Fields Detection (DATQuaR). The MODIS VIs images were aggregated in bimonthly periods using different ways: average, maximum, minimum and median of registered values. After that, the image of the previous period was subtracted from the image of the monitored period,... |

The low altitude aerial images are becoming more common every day due to low cost and ease of use of platforms such as remotely piloted aircraft. The potential application of this type of data is very high. One example is the precision agriculture, a farming management concept based on observing, measuring and responding to inter and intra-field variability in crops, an activity than can greatly benefit from this technology. The low altitude of image acquisition allows very high level of scene details but aggravates problems such as lighting variation and image deformation. In addition, often common cameras are used in different situations altitude, inclination, lighting and camera setup. These specific characteristics in relation to the orbital data... |

Abstract: The monitoring of agricultural activities at a regular basis is crucial to assure that the food production meets the world population demands, which is increasing yearly. Such information can be derived from remote sensing data. In spite of topic?s relevance, not enough efforts have been invested to exploit modern pattern recognition and machine learning methods for agricultural land-cover mapping from multi-temporal, multi-sensor earth observation data. Furthermore, only a small proportion of the works published on this topic relates to tropical/subtropical regions, where crop dynamics is more complicated and difficult to model than in temperate regions. A major hindrance has been the lack of accurate public databases for the comparison of... |

In this work, we used data on area harvested and quantity produced from the three major Brazilian crops in the area: soybean, sugarcane and corn, provided by the IBGE Municipal Agricultural Research (PAM), for the period between 1990 and 2014, to evaluate the dynamics of agriculture in Brazil. The analysis focused on the increase in time and the change in the space occupied by the production. We used images of the sensors OLI and TM on board the Landsat-8 and Landsat-5 satellites, respectively, to exemplify changes in land use and land cover in selected areas. In 25 years, the combination of increased Brazilian agricultural productivity with the large-scale adoption of the safrinha or second crop season (intensification of agriculture) resulted in a 197%... |

Abstract: The agricultural activity can greatly benefit from remote sensing technology (RS). Optical passive RS has been vastly explored for agricultural mapping and monitoring, in despite of cloud cover issue. This is observed even in the tropics, where frequency of clouds is very high. However, more studies are needed to better understand the high dynamism of tropical agriculture and its impact on the use of passive RS. In tropical countries, such as in Brazil, the use of current agricultural technologies, associated with favourable climate, allow the planting period to be wide and to have plants of varying phenological cycles. In this context, the main objective of the current study is to better understand the dynamics of a selected area in Southeast of... |

The spatial variability of soil and plant properties has been a concern of researchers, since the variation of any phenomenon in space or time, whether caused by natural processes or by man-imposed actions, has always existed and need considered. The objective was relate spatial variability of chemical attributes, including carbon and nitrogen, to pasture and sugarcane areas in the west of the state of São Paulo. A total of 36 points were sampled in the west of the state of São Paulo in areas of pasture and sugar cane. For each point were collected soil chemical data at depth of 0 cm to 30 cm in March 2015. For identification of spatial dependence, data interpolation and for the elaboration of the maps, the geostatistical analysis was used including... |
