In forage systems, soil C and N are affected by many factors including above- and belowground biomass, root exudation, defoliation management, and tissue turnover dynamics. There is need to understand the main drivers of soil C and N accumulation under perennial forages, especially those factors associated with differences in growth and canopy characteristics. The objective was to determine soil C and N status and their relationship with above- and belowground characteristics of six rhizoma peanut (RP, Arachis glabrata) entries. Treatments were Apalachee, Chico, Ecoturf, Ona33, Peace, and Tito RP arranged in four replicates of a randomized complete block design. Stands were planted in 2010 and harvested twice per year after establishment. The area was... |

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.) could play an important role as a feed source for ruminants in arid and semi-arid zones of the world owing to its high yield and drought tolerance. The current paper assessed the agronomic characteristics, ensilability, intake and digestibility of five Brazilian pearl millet cultivars (IPA Bulk1BF, BRS 1501, CMS-03, CMS-01 and BN-2) in a typical Brazilian northeastern semi-arid climate. Forage was harvested at the dough stage of grain maturity (growth stage 86 according to the BBCH scale) and ensiled under laboratory and farm conditions. Apparent digestibility of the silages was determined using 25 Santa Inês male lambs. The cultivars CMS-01, CMS-03 and BN-2 out-performed the others in terms of dry matter (DM) and... |

Recommended planting season for rhizoma peanut (RP; Arachis glabrata Benth.) is January through March. Land area planted to RP annually has increased, requiring custom planters to extend planting beyond that period, and variation in rhizome quality and establishment success have been reported. The objectives of this study were to determine how shoot and root-rhizome characteristics of four RP entries (?Florigraze?, ?Ecoturf?, ?UF Peace?, and ?UF Tito?) vary during a February through August planting period and relate these changes to subsequent establishment performance in the field near Citra, FL. Herbage mass (HM), leaf area index (LAI), and root-rhizome mass (RM) were quantified biweekly in RP nursery plots of all four entries. Rhizomes were planted at... |

In the last two decades breeders have focused on hybridization within the grass genus Brachiaria in order to integrate the most outstanding characteristics of several species to enhance animal performance in forage-livestock system, especially when addressing edaphoclimatic conditions and pest susceptibility. The objective of this study was to compare herbage accumulation, nutritive value, and animal performance of ?Ipyporã? [B. ruziziensis Germ. & Evrard × B. brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) Stapf] and ?Mulato II? (B. ruziziensis × B. brizantha× B. decumbens Stapf) brachiariagrasses in the Brazilian Amazon biome. All experimental units were continuously stocked using a variable stocking rate from May 2016 to May 2018. Herbage accumulation (HA) was... |

Supplements or conserved forage are often used to overcome forage quantity deficits for beef cattle, but stockpiled forage can be more economical. Limpograss [Hemarthria altissima (Poir.) Stapf & C.E. Hubb.] is the best available species for stockpiling in Florida because it is productive in autumn and maintains greater digestibility than other grasses at advanced stages of maturity. New limpograss hybrid breeding lines have been developed, but they have not been tested under stockpiling. Three limpograss breeding lines (1, 4F, and 10) and the most-used cultivar, Floralta, received 50 or 100 kg N ha?1 at initiation of stockpiling and herbage accumulated for 8, 12, or 16 wk. Entry 4F had greater herbage accumulation (7.3 Mg ha?1) than Entries 10, 1, and... |

Although Brachiaria spp. grasses are important components of sustainable forage?livestock systems in the Amazon biome, cultivar diversification is needed to reduce risk from pests and diseases. Brachiaria hybrid ?BRS RB331 Ipyporã? [B. ruziziensis Germ. & Evrard ´ B. brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) Stapf] was released in 2017 as an alternative for intensively managed forage?livestock systems. Our objective was to compare herbage accumulation (HA), nutritive value, and organic reserves of Ipyporã and standard hybrid ?Mulato II? (B. ruziziensis ´ B. brizantha ´ B. decumbens Stapf) under continuous stocking during 2 yr in the Amazon biome. Treatments were the two cultivars replicated four times in a randomized complete block design, and each experimental... |

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.) is an important crop for rainfed production systems and can play a significant role as a feed source for ruminants owing to its high yield and drought tolerance. It is well-established that the maturity stage can influence the chemical composition as well as the nutritional value of crops traditionally used for silage production, although quantitative evidence that this occurs with pearl millet under rainfed conditions is lacking. The current research assessed the agronomic characteristics, ensilability, intake and digestibility of a Brazilian pearl millet cultivar (IPA BULK1-BF) harvested at four different growth stages. Forage was harvested at 35, 50, 65 and 80 days after sowing and ensiled under laboratory and... |

A genetically diverse population of Setaria sphacelata was developed at Gainesville, Florida by intercrossing the cultivars ?Narok?, ?Kazungula? and ?Solander? and a local persistent population. To determine heritability of traits that may improve setaria as a forage plant in Florida, progeny of the intercrossed population underwent two cycles of selection for inflorescence number and one cycle for leaf width. The selected populations, together with cultivars and introductions, were evaluated for morphological characters, yield and forage quality in field experiments with close- and wide-spaced plants. Increase of inflorescence number was not obtained by selection but resulted in decreased plant height, inflorescence length, yield, leaf width, and... |

The increase in global demand for animal protein will likely require changes in the agricultural sector, including greater diversification and efficiency. To meet this demand, sustainable intensification of existing animal production systems may be possible, especially through integration of livestock with crops or forestry. Thus, our objective was to compare forage production and animal performance in monoculture and integrated systems in the Brazilian Amazon Biome. The three systems were 1) livestock (L) with palisadegrass (B. brizanthacv. Marandu) in monoculture; 2) silvopastoral systems (SP) with palisadegrass pastures integrated with eucalyptus trees (E. urograndis) arranged in three-row groves with groves spaced 30-m apart; and 3) crop-livestock (CL)... |

Forage production is primarily limited by weather conditions under dryland production systems in Brazilian semi-arid regions, therefore sowing at the appropriate time is critical. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the CSM-CERES-Pearl Millet model from the DSSAT software suite for its ability to simulate growth, development, and forage accumulation of pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.] at three Brazilian semi-arid locations, and to use the model to study the impact of different sowing dates on pearl millet performance for forage. Four pearl millet cultivars were grown during the 2011 rainy season in field experiments conducted at three Brazilian semi-arid locations, under rainfed conditions. The genetic coefficients of the four pearl... |
