Mapping and monitoring of pressure from fishery on the marine benthic environment is necessary to support an ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM). In many cases this need is not reflected in official fisheries statistics and logbooks, where focus typically is on catch rather than effort. Consequently, most logbook information is not well suited for quantitative estimation of seafloor impact (swept area and impact severity) of the different gears and trips. We developed a method to overcome this information deficiency of official statistics and produced European wide high-resolution fishing intensity maps (total yearly swept area within grid cells of 1*1 minutes longitude and latitude) for 2010, 2011 and 2012. The annual distribution and...

BENTHIS developed the scientific basis to quantify the impact of bottom trawling on the seafloor and the benthic ecosystem. Based on insight in how fishing gear affects the seafloor, an assessment framework was developed that provide indicators of impact and seafloor status on a continuous scale that can be applied in the context of the MSFD. The mechanistic approach allows us to set reference values of impact (status) to estimate the proportion of a region or habitat where the impact is below (status is above) the threshold. The methodology combines estimates of trawling intensity with the depth to which the fishing gear penetrates into the sea bed (penetration profile) and the sensitivity of the habitat. Habitat sensitivity is estimated from the...

Efficiency of the bottom trawl used for the Mediterranean international trawl survey (MEDITS) ArchiMer
Fiorentini, Loris; Dremiere, Pierre-yves; Leonori, Iole; Sala, Antonello; Palumbo, Vito.
The aim of the work presented in this paper was to assess the relative efficiency of the GOC 73 sampling trawl used for the Mediterranean international trawl survey programme (MEDITS) compared with that of a typical Italian commercial trawl. The latter was chosen because it is commonly used by fishermen in the central Adriatic, where the experiment was conducted, and therefore appeared as the best possible sampler of the commercial species present in those areas. Moreover, this trawl is similar to the various trawls used for the Italian national survey programme (GRUND). Four fishing trips were conducted between 1996 and 1997 in different areas and seasons to sample different species. Each trip was conducted in the same fishing area. A codend cover mounted...

Escapement from the main body of the bottom trawl used for the Mediterranean international trawl survey (MEDITS) ArchiMer
Dremiere, Pierre-yves; Fiorentini, Loris; Cosimi, Giulio; Leonori, Iole; Sala, Antonello; Spagnolo, Alessandra.
Escapement through the body or under the footrope of the sampling trawl used for the Mediterranean international trawl survey programme (MEDITS) was assessed i) by means of visual observations performed with a towed operating vehicle equipped with a high-sensitivity video camera, and ii) by attaching small bags to the outside of the trawl body and under the footrope. Due to the small size of most of the individuals present in the study area and to the towing speed, fish behaviour in front of the trawl could not be frequently observed. In contrast, their behaviour was easily observed inside the net, especially upstream and inside the codend. Some species, such as horse mackerel (trachurus sp.), showed greater swimming endurance compared with others such as...

Experimental and theoretical study of red mullet (Mullus barbatus) selectivity in codends of Mediterranean bottom trawls ArchiMer
Sala, Antonello; Priour, Daniel; Herrmann, Bent.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect on Mullus barbatus (red mullet) codend selectivity by increasing the codend mesh size or reducing the number of meshes in the codend circumference. This was performed through experimental sea trials and computer simulations. The sea trials were carried out in the Adriatic Sea using a polyamide codend in order to assess its selectivity, to record morphological (height, width and length) and population size structure parameters of red mullet (Mullus barbatus). The selectivity process in the codend was also simulated with an individual-based model (PRESEMO) and a finite element model (FEMNET) to calculate the codend shapes. By adjusting the behavioural description of red mullet in the simulation, the...

Fishing Sea-bed Habitat Risk Assessment (A framework towards the quantitative assessment of trawling impact on the sea-bed and benthic ecosystem) ArchiMer
Rijnsdorp, A.d.; Bastardie, Francois; Bolam, S.g.; Buhl-mortensen, Lene; Eigaard, O.r.; Hamon, Katell G.; Hiddink, Jan Geert; Hintzen, N.t.; Ivanovic, Ana; Kenny, Andrew; Laffargue, Pascal; Nielsen, R.n.; O’neill, F.g.; Piet, G.j.; Polet, Hans; Sala, Antonello; Smith, Chris; Van Denderen, P.d.; Van Kooten, Tobias; Zengin, Mustafa.
A framework to assess the impact of mobile fishing gear on the seabed and benthic ecosystem is presented. The framework that can be used at regional and local scales considers the physical effects of trawl gears on the seabed, on marine taxa and the functioning of the benthic ecosystem. A reductionist approach is applied that breaks down a fishing gear in its components and distinguishes a number of biological traits that are chosen to determine the vulnerability of benthos for the impact of a gear component or to provide a proxy for their ecological role. The approach considers a wide variety of gear elements, such as otter boards, twin trawl clump and ground-rope, and, sweeps that herd the fish. The physical impact of these elements on the seabed,...

Piet, Gerjan; Soma, Katrine; Bonanomi, Sara; Laffargue, Pascal; Nielsen, J. Rasmus; Notti, Emilio; Polet, Hans; Sala, Antonello; Zengin, Mustafa; Rijnsdorp, Adriaan.
The mobile demersal gears currently applied in the fishery sectors across Europe are known to have a large impact both directly and indirectly on the benthic habitats and communities. There is increasing concern about these impacts and the aim is to reduce these impacts on the wider ecosystem without compromising the ability of the fishery to provide food or maintain a socio-economically viable fishery. This is reflected in the main policy framework, i.e. the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), which encourages an ecosystem based approach, in which benefits from living aquatic resources are ensured ‘while the direct and indirect impacts of fishing operations on marine ecosystems are low and not detrimental to the future functioning, diversity and integrity of...

Baltic Sea Benthic ecosystem impacts from demersal fishery in the western Baltic is assumed to come mainly from Nephrops trawling in the central and southern Kattegat, mussel dredging in the Belt Sea, and mixed cod trawling in the western Baltic Sea.These fisheries both impact the seabed, as well as produce substantial amounts of discards. The western Baltic Sea offer a unique opportunity to analyse the benthic effects of fishingthanks to the closure of Øresund to towed gears since the 1920s, and the introduction of the Kattegat MPA in2009 (including cod closure) and the western Baltic Sea Natura-2000 areas. Furthermore an extensive benthic nationalmonitoring and data collection effort has taken place in the area over a number of years, which can be usedto...

In this deliverable we investigated the drivers of investment in fisheries and how those can be activated to stimulate investment in alternative technologies to protect the benthos. To capture a wider range of factors than quantitative factors only we modified the work plan and included interviews with fishing industries in all regions. As a result we identified a wide range of reasons why fishers have (or have not) invested in alternative gears. As expected, the profitability of alternative technology is an important factor to invest but we also found many others. Those drivers were classified as economic, technical, regulatory, social, governance and environmental drivers. As advice to managers we also identified where and how interventions could improve...

Report on technological innovations and management scenario’s to mitigate fishing impacts on the benthic ecosystem and their socio-economic consequences in regional seas ArchiMer
Sala, Antonello; Nielsen, Rasmus; Polet, Hans; Laffargue, Pascal; Smith, Chris; Zengin, Mustafa; Rijnsdorp, Adriaan.
This report provides a detailed account of the field and modelling studies carried out in the BENTHIS project in the Baltic Sea, North Sea, Western Waters, Mediterranean and Black Sea on the mitigation of bottom trawling impacts on the seafloor and benthic ecosystem. The studies were conducted in close collaboration with fishers and gear manufacterers and focused on the major bottom trawl fisheries in European waters: otter trawl fisheries for demersal fish, otter trawl fisheries for Nephrops, beam trawl fisheries for flatfish, beam trawl fisheries for brown shrimps, beam trawl fisheries for whelks, dredge fisheries for bivalves (mussel, scallops). Both technological innovations and alternative management scenarios were explored. Technological innovations...
