A new species of Talaromyces C. R. Benjamin, T. assiutensis, is described and illustrated. It was isolated from Egyptian soil amended with crushed buffalo hooves and incubated for five months at 35°C. T. assiutensis is characterized by white to pale yellow ascomata, small, smooth-walled to finely roughened ascospores and short biverticillate conidiophores. The taxa of Talaromyces published after 1972 are briefly discussed. |

The genus Torulomyces was characterised by species that typically have conidiophores consisting of solitary phialides that produce long chains of conidia connected by disjunctors. Based on the phylogenetic position of P. lagena (generic ex-neotype), the genus and its seven species were transferred to Penicillium and classified in sect. Torulomyces along with P. cryptum and P. lassenii. The aim of this study was to review the species currently classified in sect. Torulomyces using morphology and phylogenies of the ITS, BenA, CaM and RPB2 regions. Based on our results, we accept 16 species in sect. Taxa of the Talaromyces purpurogenus complex were studied using a polyphasic approach. ITS barcodes were used to show relationships between species of the T. purpurogenus complex and other Talaromyces species. RPB1, RPB2, β-tubulin and calmodulin sequences were used to delimit phylogenetic species in the complex. These data, combined with phenotypic characters, showed that the complex contains four species: T. purpurogenus, T. ruber comb. nov. and two new species T. amestolkiae sp. nov. and T. stollii sp. nov. The latter three species belong to the same clade and T. purpurogenus is located in a phylogenetic distant clade. Current literature accepts 17 species in Penicillium section Sclerotiora. Several produce colonies in bright yellow to orange colours and have monoverticillate conidiophores, apart from P. herquei, P. malachiteum and P. nodositatum, which are biverticillate. The focus of this paper is to refine the concepts of the species currently accepted in the section and introduce five new species, named after the Dutch Royal family as P. vanoranjei, P. maximae, P. amaliae, P. alexiae and P. arianeae. Species classified in Penicillium sect. Chrysogena are primary soil-borne and the most well-known members are P. chrysogenum and P. nalgiovense. Penicillium chrysogenum has received much attention because of its role in the production on penicillin and as a contaminant of indoor environments and various food and feedstuffs. Another biotechnologically important species is P. nalgiovense, which is used as a fungal starter culture for the production of fermented meat products. Byssochlamys and related Paecilomyces strains are often heat resistant and may produce mycotoxins in contaminated pasteurised foodstuffs. A comparative study of all Byssochlamys species was carried out using a polyphasic approach to find characters that differentiate species and to establish accurate data on potential mycotoxin production by each species. Phylogenetic analysis of the ITS region, parts of the â-tubulin and calmodulin genes, macro- and micromorphological examinations and analysis of extrolite profiles were applied. Fungi producing ornamented asexual structures and belonging to the Oomycetes (Trachysphaera) or Zygomycetes (Azygozygum, Mortierella) are described. They were studied by light and scanning electron microscopy while also mating experiments and carbohydrate analyses were performed. Azygozygum chlamydosporum is closely related to Mortierella indohii and therefore Azygozygum is considered to be a synonym of Mortierella. Mortierella echinosphaera spec. nov. is also closely related, but no zygotes are known, only ornamented chlamydospores have been observed. Absence of glucuronic acid and fucose and a low glucosamine content in Trachysphaera fructigena show that it belongs to the Oomycetes. |

The genus Talaromyces Benjamin, being a heterogeneous genus is divided into two genera: Talaromyces, based on T. vermiculatus, characterized by asci developing in chains and Hamigera gen. nov., based on T. avellaneus, characterized by asci formed singly from croziers. Talaromyces striatus is also included in Hamigera. Descriptions and drawings are presented of the two species of Hamigera and the three species of the closely related genus Byssochlamys. A new series of Penicillium, the P. avellaneum series, is erected to accomodate P. avellaneum and P. ingelheimense. |

The taxonomy of Talaromyces rugulosus, T. wortmannii and closely related species, classified in Talaromyces sect. Islandici, is reviewed in this paper. The species of Talaromyces sect. Islandici have restricted growth on MEA and CYA, generally have yellow mycelia and produce rugulosin and/or skyrin. Sporotrichum aranearum Cavara is redescribed from living cultures and found to have two kinds of conidiogenesis: phialidic and polyblastic. The latter type which is most conspicuous in this fungus, fits the genus Engyodontium de Hoog. This genus is considered to be a link between Verticillium and Aphanocladium and its generic diagnosis is extended to include both progressive and retrogressive formation of new conidiiferous pegs.
