Organic agriculture world-wide offers the promise of a future to produce and distribute food and other farm products in a healthy, ecologically sound, truly sustainable and fair way. The full benefits of organic agriculture are just now being realized—from ecosystem services to the provision of healthier food - yet, to reach its full potential organic farming needs to address many challenges. While organic agriculture has grown in strength and is in the most favorable position it has ever been in with respect to market conditions, government policies and international institutional support, it still does not have adequate resources to continue its expansion. The Technology Innovation Platform of IFOAM (TIPI) has developed a vision and an agenda to advance... |

A Guide to Successful Organic Marketing Initiatives provides practical application of the business and marketing ideas developed from the EU research project OMIaRD. Businesses based on the collaboration between organic farmers often have resources of enthusiasm and considerable skill in agricultural production but lack the means and expertise to develop successfully in the face of rapidly changing market structures and conditions. It provides useful advice on the market and policy issues to take into account, and on preparing to establish a new business with farmer participation, managing the start-up phase, and on into consolidation of a mature enterprise. It will be useful for organic farmers, enterprise managers, and practitioners in rural and regional... |

In this report, a group of European Commission (EC) appointed experts recommend orientations for food and nutrition security research and innovation in the years to come. The report calls for a Research, Innovation and Investment Strategy (RI&IS) in line with the EC FOOD2030 initiative to deliver on four priorities: nutrition for sustainable and healthy diets; climate smart and environmentally sustainable food systems; circularity and resource efficiency of food systems; innovation and empowerment of communities. Using food systems thinking, the experts have reworked and integrated these priorities to develop a mission-type approach. |

Within the EU funded project ORGAP a toolbox was developed for the evaluation of the European as well as national action plans fror Organics food and farming. Recommendations and a resource manual for policy makers and stakeholders were published, based on the analysis of national Organic Action Plans as well as stakeholder and expert consultation. The analysis showed that several EU member states have emphasised the need to balance supply-push policies with more market-focused demand-pull policies. An integrated approach is required through the formulation of multi-functional Organic Action Plans (OAPs), which also adress the dual roles of organic farming to provide public goods and satisfy consumer demand. Eight analysed Organic Action Plans... |

In the EU funded research project EconWelfare (www.econwelfare.eu) the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) has compiled a database of animal welfare initiatives in Europe. Altogether 84 initiatives from DE, ES, IT, NL, SE, PL, UK and Macedonia were clustered and analysed with regard to their main goals, instruments used, major actors and success factors , taking account of national differences. The assessment of these initiatives showed that some actor networks (often organic farming standards schemes) are successfully aiming at multiple goals (including labelling), using different policy instruments by involving broader networks, whereas a majority of initiatives are focussing on single goals using smaller networks. The role and limitation of... |

Differences between the EU Regulation (EEC) 2092/91 and selected private as well as governmental organic standards were analysed as part of an EU-funded research project on the revision of this regulation. Most of the differences were found in the following areas: conversion, fertilising, animal feeding, veterinary treatment and animal husbandry. Many differences have specific justifications, influenced by specific national or regional circumstances or policy framework. The variations between the EU Regulation, governmental and private-sector standards do not concern basic requirements; i.e. there is a general agreement on the main general principles of organic agriculture within the EU. A certain regional flexibility can be justified. |

This Deliverable 3.2 report presents an analysis of differences between EEC Regulation 2092/91 and other organic standards and their implementation, using a specially developed database (www.organicrules.org). It further reports on database development. The work was carried out as part of the “EEC 2092/91 (Organic) Revision” STREP project (No. SSPE-CT- 2004-502397) within the EU 6th Framework Programme. The main objective was to identify differences in organic standards in relation to Regulation (EEC) 2092/91 and to analyse selected national governmental and private organic standards with the aim of identifying specific areas in the (EEC) 2092/91 where revision in terms of harmonisation, regionalisation or simplification may be possible. |

In the last years the market for organically produced wine has developed significantly. But until now only few data are available about the actual organic wine market and market needs as well as future market trends. Therefore, the conduction of a trans-national study was seen as necessary within the ORWINE project. The aim of this market study was to get a clear picture about the national structure as well as the development and the potential of the domestic and international organic wine market. This report gives the results and main trends concerning organic wines markets of the first step of this study: status quo analysis from experts’ survey and literature analysis and operators’ market survey with qualitative and quantitative data. The second step... |

Because wines (of grapes) were excluded from the scope of EC Regulation 2092/91 (annex 6, concerning processing organic food, does not apply to wine) concerning organic farming, up till now there is no legal definition for organic wines at European level, but only rules for organic grapes production. This project: ORWINE, is aiming to help the UE commission to develop a legislative framework for the transformation of organic grapes into organic wine. This would allow replacing the current definition “wine made from organically grown grapes” by “organic wines”. One of the first tasks of this project is a description of the regulatory framework applied to EU organic wine-making. Legal public and private standards for wine processing are taken in... |

The overall objective of the subproject on processing, where the Delphi expert survey was an important task, is “to develop of a framework for the design of “minimum” and “low input” processing strategies, which guarantee food quality and safety.” It should support the overall aim of the integrated QLIF Project (Quality of Low-Input Food) in improving quality, ensuring safety and reducing costs along the European organic and “low input” food supply chains through research, dissemination and training activities. The method chosen was the Delphi method. The work was carried out in the form of a two step Delphi survey. In the first round 250 experts in 13 countries in Europe were involved, and were asked to respond to a standardised questionnaire in October... |

In the European funded research project FOODLINKS an analysis of 19 cases of Short Food Supply Chains (SFSCs) was carried out. A special focus was on their contribution to health and sustainability, also with a focus on organic supply chains. These potential contributions were identified (based on case analysis and literature): Health & wellbeing: increased consumer knowledge, possibly leading to healthier diets, but not always fully reached. Environmental: minimised use of resources such as fossil fuel or packaging, and/or use of less polluting methods of production (e.g. organic farming); significant variation between SFSCs. Social: better ensuring fairness and trust in many SFSCs; more social inclusion of people; potential to revitalise local... |
