Feuerbrandbekämpfung im ökologischen Obstbau - Ergebnisse der Bekämpfungsversuche 2004 Organic Eprints
Kunz, S.; von Eitzen-Ritter, M.; Schmitt, A.; Haug, P..

Kunz, S.; von Eitzen-Ritter, M.; Schmitt, A.; Haug, P..

Field testing of strategies for fire blight control in organic fruit growing Organic Eprints
Kunz, S.; Schmitt, A.; Haug, P..
In organic fruit growing effective control strategies are needed to prevent blossom infections by the fire blight pathogen Erwinia amylovora. Many potential control agents are under discussion and have been tested in vitro and in vivo. 19 out of 27 tested preparations showed a high efficacy against E. amylovora in vitro. Nevertheless, on detached apple blossoms only 7 of them led to a symptom reduction by more than 50%. In six field trials conducted according to the EPPO guideline PP1/166(3) BlossomProtect (82%), Myco-sin (65%) and Funguran (58%) had the highest efficiency. In 2006 and 2007, strategies to integrate BlossomProtect in spray schedules of organic apple production have been tested. The use of sulphur or lime-sulphur before or after...

Methods for seed treatment in organic farming Organic Eprints
Koch, E.; Schmitt, A..
Abstract – Seed-borne diseases are increasingly becoming important in organic farming, therefore effective seed treatment methods are urgently needed. Physical methods have efficacy against a number of seed-borne pathogens, but may have adverse effects if applied at too high intensity. Thermal treatment in water has the widest application. To control the loose smuts of wheat and barley it is still the only available non-chemical sanitation method. Other physical treatment methods with practical relevance in cereals are hot humid air and electron treatment. Hot water treatment is also known to control different seed-borne pathogens of vegetables. Various preparations of microorganisms, plant extracts and other agents of natural origin have been and are...

Non- chemical methods of seed treatment for control of seed- borne pathogens on vegetables Organic Eprints
Amein, T.; Wright, S.A.I.; Wikström, M.; Schmitt, A.; Koch, E.; van der Wolf, J.; Groot, S.; Forsberg, G.; Werner, S.; Jahn, M..
Abstract – The aim of EU-project "Seed Treatments for Organic Vegetable Production" (STOVE) was to evaluate non-chemical methods for control of seed-borne pathogens in organic vegetable production. Physical (hot air, hot water and electron) and biologi-cal (microorganisms and different agents of natural origin) methods have been investigated. Trials have been carried out with different patho-systems such as cabbage / Alternaria spp and parsley / Septoria pet-roselini. Good control was generally obtained with the physical methods. In field trials, the yield of parsley naturally infested by S. petroselini was increased by 20 % when the seeds were treated with hot air. In trials performed under controlled conditions, also thyme oil treatment increased the...

Reef Carbonate Productivity During Quaternary Sea Level Oscillations ArchiMer
Husson, L.; Pastier, A. -m.; Pedoja, K.; Elliot, M.; Paillard, D.; Authemayou, C.; Sarr, A. -c.; Schmitt, A.; Cahyarini, S. Y..
Global variations in reef productivity during the Quaternary depend on external parameters that may alter the global chemical balance in the oceans and atmosphere. We designed a numerical model that simulates reef growth, erosion, and sedimentation on coastlines undergoing sea level oscillations, and uplift or subsidence. We further develop a probabilistic evaluation that accounts for variable vertical ground motion, erosion, and foundation morphologies. Absolute sea level change appears primordial, as productivity must have increased by an order of magnitude since the onset of the glacial cycles, approximate to 2.6 Ma. But most important is relative sea level change, i.e., eustasy modulated by uplift or subsidence, that rejuvenates the accommodation space...

Single foraminifera Mg/Ca analyses of past glacial-interglacial temperatures derived from G. ruber sensu stricto and sensu lato morphotypes ArchiMer
Schmitt, A.; Elliot, M.; Thirumalai, K.; La, C.; Bassinot, F.; Petersen, J.; Movellan, A.; Jorry, Stephan; Borgomano, J..
The ratio of magnesium to calcium (Mg/Ca) in foraminiferal shells is commonly used as a proxy for past ocean temperature. Recent advances in elemental analyses now enable single-specimen measurements of planktic foraminifera and thus, can provide information on past seasonal and interannual variability, owing to the near-monthly lifespan of foraminifera. In this study, we explore the temperature variance recorded by Mg/Ca in tests of foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber, a planktic species that occurs throughout the year in tropical waters. Using LA-ICP-MS, we characterize Mg/Ca variability in single specimens of two morphotypes of G. ruber picked from a sediment core retrieved offshore New Caledonia. We provide an estimate of the range of calcification...
