Are shoppers aware of Organic Certification logos? Organic Eprints

The article explores consumer awareness and perception of different certification schemes and corresponding logos in the UK, based on a survey with more than 400 consumers in three supermarkets and one organic shop. The work is part of the Certcost project*, funded by the European Seventh Framework Programme.

Are we mining the soil ? Organic Eprints

Seven organic farms took the opportunity to look at one or more of their fields. They gained insights into their rotations and NDICEA seems to be a useful tool for assessing nitrogen supply/losses throughout a rotation. The results on the farms indicate that there is a danger of losing nitrogen even in organic rotations. In the video, the researcher summarises the results and one of farmers taking part shares his thoughts. The common conclusions are that spring ley cultivation and strategic use of organic fertilisers are possible strategies for improving nutrient balances in organic farming. 'Flying livestock' and innovative strategies to keep the soil covered (e.g. living mulches, undersowing) may also help.

Assessing the public goods provided by organic agriculture: lessons learned from practice Organic Eprints

The role of farms as providers of public goods has long been recognised, and measuring performance in this area is of increasing interest to policy makers, in light of the approaching Common Agricultural Policy reform. The Organic Research Centre has been working on this topic in recent years, through the development of sustainability assessment tools. The latest outcome from this process is a ‘Public Goods’ assessment tool, developed through a Natural England funded project which aimed to evaluate the benefits accruing from organic management and entering into an Organic Entry Level Stewardship (OELS) agreement. This paper describes the development of the Public Goods (PG) tool, and what has been learned in the process.

Carbon footprints of organic dairying in six European countries—real farm data analysis Organic Eprints

Dairy farming is the largest agricultural contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. In this study, the carbon footprint of organic dairying was evaluated by means of a life cycle assessment, based on real farm data from six European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Italy and United Kingdom. A total of 34 farms were analysed. The assessment was carried out using an attributional approach with system boundaries from cradle to farm gate. In relation to dairy production, a functional unit of 1 kg of energy corrected milk was used. The results gave an average of 1.32 kg CO2 equivalents per kilogramme of energy-corrected milk with standard deviation of 0.22, which is consistent with recent studies. In recent years there has been a great deal of interest in assessing the sustainability of agriculture in terms of its social, environmental and economic impact and a number of indicators and tools are used. Measurements take place at the farm or product level and indicators can be outcome related e.g. number of butterfly species present, or management related e.g. percentage of fields with margins growing wildflowers to attract butterflies. OCIS Public Goods Tool Development Organic Eprints

There has recently been an increase in interest amongst policy-makers in the question of whether farming provides a “public good” beyond the simple production of food, which justifies support from, for instance, EU agricultural policy. Benefits such as an improved environment or better water quality can be perceived to be public goods. Public goods and farming Organic Eprints

There has recently been an increase in interest in the “public goods” that could be provided by a farm alongside its primary function of agricultural production. This paper reviews recent reports on the topic of public goods and, in particular, the public goods provided by agriculture and then goes on to discuss the development of a tool which can be used to assess the provision of public goods on a farm across a range of areas: soil management, biodiversity, landscape and heritage, water management, manure management and nutrients, energy and carbon, food security, agricultural systems diversity, social capital, farm business resilience, and animal health and welfare.

Reducing Global Warming: The Potential of Organic Agriculture Organic Eprints

Climate change mitigation is urgent, and adaptation to climate change is crucial, particularly in agriculture, where food security is at stake. Agriculture, currently responsible for 20-30% of global greenhouse gas emissions (counting direct and indirect agricultural emissions), can however contribute to both climate change mitigation and adaptation. The main mitigation potential lies in the capacity of agricultural soils to sequester CO2 through building organic matter. This potential can be realized by employing sustainable agricultural practices, such as those commonly found within organic farming systems. Use of local renewable resources in a low-input organic vegetable food supply system in UK is evaluated against the use of imported resources in the same system. Despite much focus by the farmer on low-input, the production and distribution system is only supported by 13% local renewable resources based on an emergy assessment. Purpose - This paper considers the question of whether UK consumers recognise and trust organic certification logos and whether the presence of these logos on a product increases consumer willingness to pay for that product. Methodology/approach - To ascertain the reaction of UK consumers to organic certification logos commonly used in the UK, this study makes use of three methods: focus groups, a consumer survey and a willingness to pay experiment (choice experiment). When trying to optimize the sustainability performance of farms and farming systems, a consideration of trade-offs and synergies between different themes and dimensions is required. The aim of this paper is to perform a systematic analysis of trade-offs and synergies across all dimensions and themes.
