A REVIEW AND EVALUATION OF WEATHER-CROP YIELD MODELS AgEcon
Geigel, Joanne M.; Sundquist, W. Burt.
The purpose of this paper is the relatively limited one of reviewing the literature for models which develop specific relationships between climatic variables and crop yields. Following a review of recent weather-crop yield modeling efforts we evaluate these models and suggest some conceptual models and data base improvements if we are to adequately project the impacts on crop production of expected future climatic change. Our review and evaluation centers on weather-crop yield models applicable to the central grain belt of the U.S., mainly the Corn Belt and Great Plains production regions.

AGRICULTURE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT - THE MINNESOTA CASE AgEcon
Sundquist, W. Burt.
The comments which follow relating to the role of agriculture in Minnesota's economic development are organized into four sections. First a brief look is taken at historical changes in production agriculture in Minnesota. Second some crude comparisons are made of growth over time in agriculture and in other major economic sectors. Third a brief assessment is made of current employment and income in Minnesota's agriculture and related industries. Finally, a list is presented of several future issues which appear important for Minnesota's agriculture with particular reference to its natural resource base.

CONGRUENCE OF THE HATCH FUNDED REGIONAL RESEARCH PORTFOLIO WITH NATIONAL AND REGIONAL RESEARCH PRIORITIES AgEcon
Sundquist, W. Burt; Halbach, Daniel Walter.
The major focus of this report is on evaluation of the extent to which the allocation of regional research funding support, particularly the allocation of Hatch Regional Research Funds (RRF), is congruent with national and regional research priorities. Other objectives are to evaluate the appropriate duration of regional research projects and to recommend a process for the selection and development of National Research Projects (NRPs) and National Research Support Projects (NRSPs).

Cost Structures, Productivities and the Distribution of Technology Benefits Among Producers for Major U.S. Field Crops AgEcon
Cooke, Stephen C.; Sundquist, W. Burt.
The purpose of this paper is to estimate the cost structures and resource productivities involved in production of four major U.S. field crops and to estimate the distribution among producers of benefits from production related technology. These field crops include corn, soybeans, wheat and cotton grown in selected homogeneous soil and rainfall areas of the U.S. The cost structure of each commodity is estimated relative to a Cobb-Douglas cost function. Productivity is assessed across time, regions and size of enterprise. The distribution of technology benefits is determined by region and enterprise size for each commodity.

ECONOMICS OF THE FOOD ANIMAL INDUSTRY IN THE U.S. AgEcon
Sundquist, W. Burt.
This paper has the objective of describing briefly the food animal industry in the U.S. from an economic perspective so as to aid in the subsequent identification of critical research needs relating to production, marketing and distribution. It focuses on beef, pork, lamb-mutton and poultry meats produced from human consumption. In addition it considers two other major animal product food sources, dairy products and eggs.

ESTIMATING MARGINAL IMPLICIT PRICES FOR SELECTED QUALITY ATTRIBUTES OF HYBRID SEED CORN AgEcon
Ekanem, Enefiok P.; Sundquist, W. Burt.
The central objective of this study was to estimate the implicit marginal prices for the following attributes of hybrid seed corn: yield, moisture content, root lodging, stalk lodging, stand survival and ear drop. This study fills an existent gap in the application of a hedonic price technique to agricultural commodities. A hedonic price equation was constructed and estimated using characteristics data on hybrid corn varieties obtained from the Iowa State University Extension Service. Seed price data were solicited from seed companies for the same set of hybrids. In total, fifty-nine seed companies were asked for suggested retail prices for their hybrids. Forty companies responded with 1991 price information which was used in estimating the parameters...

MEASURING AND EXPLAINING THE DECLINE IN U.S. COTTON PRODUCTIVITY GROWTH AgEcon
Cooke, Stephen C.; Sundquist, W. Burt.
Tornquist input quantity indices were used to derive total and partial factor productivity measures for U.S. cotton across time, region, and scale. Total factor productivity for U.S. cotton increased .2 percent per year between 1974 and 1982. Partial productivity measures revealed that yield growth was about .6 percent and input use grew about .4 percent per year. Cotton enterprises in Alabama and Mississippi gained and those in the Texas High Plains lost competitive advantage relative to California. In 1982, very large (1750-5900 acres) and large (950-1749 acres) cotton enterprises were 2 percent more productive than medium-size enterprises (570-949 acres).

Measuring Returns to Research Expenditures for Corn, Wheat and Soybeans AgEcon
Sundquist, W. Burt; Cheng, Cheng-Ge; Norton, George W..
A wealth of information exists on ex post returns to research investments for agriculture in the aggregate and for several agricultural commodity groups of commercial importance in the United States. Many of the investments made in agricultural research and, consequently, many of the allocative decisions on research funding, are, however, commodity-specific. Probably the main reason for the limited empirical literature on returns to commodity-specific research is that of the limited production input data available for individual commodities. Data from the U.S. Census of Agriculture, for example, do not permit commodity disaggregation beyond that employed by Bredahl and Peterson. Their analysis which utilizes commodity groups including cash crops, dairy,...
