Agriculture Biologique en Martinique, expertise collégiale Organic Eprints
Sylvander, Bertil; Moreau, M..

Sylvander, Bertil; François, Martine; Persillet, V.; Syrieix, L..

Consumer competence and loyalty in a highly uncertain market: a novel learning mechanism in relation to organic farming Organic Eprints
Sylvander, Bertil; François, Martine; Persillet, Vanessa; Sirieix, Lucie.
This study presents a novel learning process for consumers in relation to organic farming. The conditions for the development of consumer loyalty were studied against a background of great uncertainty about this market in relation to changes in consumer behaviour. Consumer competence with regard to organic farming was evaluated through cognitive and experiential experiments (labelled ‘myth’ or ‘management’). Group effects and learning effects (‘complete’ or ‘incomplete’ learning) were variously observed in the different tests. Indeed, both the cognitive phase, directed at ‘management’, and the experiential phase contributed to an improvement in consumer competence. However, improvement was not lasting in all respects. The study provides some insight into...

Schieb-Bienfait, Nathalie; Sylvander, Bertil.

Sylvander, Bertil; Schieb-Bienfait, Nathalie; Roque, Olivier; Neyrat, S.; David, C..

ORGANIC AND LOW INPUT FOOD CONSUMERS: CONCERNS AND PERSPECTIVES FOR DEVELOPING THE ORGANIC MARKET IN THE FUTURE Organic Eprints
Sylvander, Bertil; François, Martine.
This contribution deals with occasional consumers attitudes to organic/low input food in relation to quality and safety issues; and presents the results of studies conducted as part of the EU Framework 6 QLIF research project. The main result shows that a lack of knowledge among con-sumers about the production and processing tech-niques leaves room for a learning process on how to give pragmatic content to the demand from “caring people” and how to allow consumers to learn more about farming and processing.

Organic Marketing Initiatives in Europe Organic Eprints
Sylvander, Bertil; Kristensen, Niels Heine.
In the second half of the 20th century, agriculture in Europe has undergone profound technological change, associated with and to an extent supporting the long post-war economic boom. This process has not gone unchallenged, however; some resistance to the process has come from a growing perception of environmental (and to an extent social) degradation, and some farms and businesses, particularly in Less Favoured Areas, have been simply unable to keep up. For both groups, organic farming has much to offer, and as problems of the CAP have become more apparent such alternatives have been legitimised, and this has been bolstered by growing commitment of consumers who buy organic products to safeguard their health, or make an effective contribution to...

The National Research Programmes on Organic Farming 2000–2006: French Country Report Organic Eprints
Diolez, Annick; Sylvander, Bertil.
In France, the research programmes have always been fairly decentralized. They are being carried out at several research institutions1 and universities. Government funding and sources of financing are available at national, regional and district level. Even at the national level, it is not easy to identify a real unified research policy. The main way to analyse the funding systems is to follow up the topics mentioned in the calls for proposals, which are often very much influenced by various policy networks. During the last decades, farmers’ organisations have influenced the main themes of the research programmes, both at the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) as well as at other institutions. However, since the beginning of the 1990s,...

The strategic turn of Organic Farming in Europe : from a resource based to an entrepreneurial approach of Organic Marketing Initiatives Organic Eprints
Sylvander, Bertil; Schieb-Bienfait, Nathalie.
This chapter explores the Organic farming’s development potential in Europe by analysing the enterprises capacities to reach a workable structure of the supply chains, in order to market good products at reasonable prices. This study has been carried out in the framework of an European project (OMIaRD), which aimed to assess the impact of the Organic Marketing Initiatives on Rural Development. The results show that, after a growing phase, most of the Organic Marketing Initiatives meet a strategic turn point, linked to their ability to face logistic problems, linked to an increasing of collected, processed and marketed volumes. This strategic turn point leads them to take decisions together with their stakeholders, so as the economic and ethical...
