The BMGTools, created by IFREMER, are a set of pre-processing tools that help you create, check and modify bathymetric grids. CheckBMG is a part of the BMGTools. Its purpose is to help you to visualise grids created with the MARS code or with other applications and to allow you to check the relevance of the interpolation. If necessary, you can modify the grid to manually correct algorithm errors. The present document is the user manual of CheckBMG. |

The BMGTools, created by IFREMER, are a set of pre-processing tools that help you to create, check and modify bathymetric grids. CreateBMG is a part of the BMGTools. Its purpose is to help you create a hierarchy of grids on a map, resize them and interpolate bathymetry data on them, either from sounding measurements or numerically computed ground models. A software called BathyMeshGridTools is proposed to facilitate the construction of gridded bathymetry data for hydrodynamic ocean models from global to coastal scales. These tools consist of a graphical interface written in Java and a computational core written in FORTRAN, which are freely distributed under LGPL and GPL licenses (http://www.ifremer.fr/bmgtools). The process of gridded bathymetry creation relies on three successive tasks : (1) creation of structured grid using graphic user interface for positioning, resizing and creating a hierarchy of nested model grids on map ; (2) data interpolation using a grid-to-grid interpolation algorithm for interpolation of Digital Terrain Model and kriging algorithm for bathymetric sounding data interpolation ;... |

Aims - To detect and characterise extreme events in a coastal ecosystem by combining in situ high-frequency observations and high-resolution numerical simulations -To describe the interannual variability of extreme events in a context of climate change -To quantify the links between extreme low salinity episodes and both large and local scale processes, using weather regimes, precipitations and river runoffs as proxies of hydro-climate forcing |

Recent studies have shown that the use of an enstrophy-and-energy-conserving momentum advection scheme substantially reduces widespread biases of mean currents in the global 1/4 degrees DRAKKAR model. This paper investigates the origin of these improvements. A series of sensitivity simulations with different momentum advection schemes is performed with the North Atlantic 1/4 degrees DRAKKAR model. Three second order momentum advection schemes conserving, respectively, enstrophy (ens), energy (efx) and both quantities (een) are tested and their impact on the model solution are compared. The mean kinetic energy vertical profile is found to change up to 10% depending on the chosen scheme. This sensitivity is maximum in bottom layers. The analysis of the... |

Series of sensitivity tests were performed with a z-coordinate, global eddy-permitting (1/4 degrees) ocean/sea-ice model (the ORCA-R025 model configuration developed for the DRAKKAR project) to carefully evaluate the impact of recent state-of-the-art numerical schemes on model solutions. The combination of an energy-enstrophy conserving (EEN) scheme for momentum advection with a partial step (PS) representation of the bottom topography yields significant improvements in the mean circulation. Well known biases in the representation of western boundary currents, such as in the Atlantic the detachment of the Gulf Stream, the path of the North Atlantic Current, the location of the Confluence, and the strength of the Zapiola Eddy in the south Atlantic, are... |

In the north-east Atlantic Ocean, the Bay of Biscay is an intersection between a coastal constrained dynamics (wide continental shelf and shelf break regions) and an eastern boundary circulation system. In this framework, the eddy kinetic energy is 1 order of magnitude lower than in western boundary systems. To explore this coastal complex system, a high-resolution (1 km, 100 vertical sigma layers) model experiment including tidal dynamics over a period of 10 years (2001–2010) has been implemented. The ability of the numerical environment to reproduce main patterns over interannual scales is demonstrated. Based on this experiment, the features of the (sub)mesoscale processes are described in the deep part of the region (i.e. abyssal plain and continental... |

The aim of this study is to better understand the different overriding mechanisms that control the evolution of the temperature in the Bay of Biscay, through realistic simulations over a period of 50 years. Based on the work of Michel et al. (2009) on the variability of temperature in the Bay of Biscay (Fig1). We will extend the understanding of the interannual variability to the haline contents and the circulation at regional scale. Here we compare two global simulations, ORCA-G70 and ORCA-GRD100 (¼°resolution), that differs mainly in the vertical resolution and we show their variability. |

The pre-operational system PREVIMER provides coastal observations and forecasts along French coasts. It provides, among other variables, currents, sea levels, surges and waves. This paper describes the development and validation of a high temporal (15 minutes) and spatial (250 m) resolution modeling system, based on MARS hydrodynamic model (Lazure and Dumas 2008), along the Atlantic and English Channel coasts. Models benefi t from experiments developed during the PREVIMER project by: (1) taking better into account wind and wave actions (improving surface drag coeffi cient parameterization), (2) taking into account a better meteorological forcing (improving spatial and temporal meteorological resolution). These high resolution models have been integrated in... |

Model drift in the Labrador Sea in eddy permitting model simulations is examined using a series of configurations based on the NEMO numerical framework. There are two phases of the drift that we can identify, beginning with an initial rapid 3-year period, associated with the adjustment of the model from its initial conditions followed by an extended model drift/adjustment that continued for at least another decade. The drift controlled the model salinity in the Labrador Sea, over-riding the variability. Thus, during this initial period, similar behavior was observed between the inter-annually forced experiments as with perpetual year forcing. The results also did not depend on whether the configuration was global, or regional North Atlantic Ocean. The... |

VACUMM is an open-source Python library for processing data from observations and numerical models. The library is now used for several years in research and operational contexts, for instance for producing fi gures and reports, validating models, converting data, or making simple or advanced diagnostics. In this paper, we introduce how the library is built, and we present two applications of its use: one in an operational context and one in a research context. |
