A DISCOURSE ANALYSIS APPROACH TO EXPLAIN THE PATH DEPENDENCY OF SEASONAL FARM LABOUR REGULATIONS IN GERMANY AgEcon
Hess, Sebastian; Kleinschmit, Daniela; Theuvsen, Ludwig; von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephan; Zschache, Ulrike.
This article introduces discourse analysis as a theoretical concept and an empirical methodology that may enable the endogenization of path creation and path breaking changes in conventional models of political path dependencies. Economic criteria such as rents created by a policy do not always provide a comprehensive explanation for path dependent political decisions. Discourse theory implies that specific interpretative schemata and narratives, such as storylines in the mass media, heavily influence the political discourse. Discourses themselves exercise a constitutive power that constrains decision-making processes and, thus, influence the ensuing policy creation path. Hence, discourses must be taken into account when political path creation is...

Agribusiness Firm Reactions to Regulations: The Case of Investments in Traceability Systems AgEcon
Heyder, Matthias; Hollmann-Hespos, Thorsten; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
The regulatory framework of food production has changed a lot in recent years. As a result, traceability of food products as become mandatory in the European Union, nonetheless leaving room for more advanced solutions. This study answers the question what exactly determines firms’ investments in traceability systems by first developing a theoretical framework—the so‐called Tracking and Tracing Systems Investment Model—and then analyzing empirical data from the German food industry that provide in‐depth insights into companies’ investment behaviour. Altogether, 234 companies representing more than fifteen different sub‐sectors of the food‐processing industry participated in an online survey. The results show that German food firms can be divided into four...

Agribusiness Firm Reactions to Regulations: The Case of Investments in Traceability Systems AgEcon
Heyder, Matthias; Hollmann-Hespos, Thorsten; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
Markets for agricultural and food products are characterized by high information asymmetries since producers, processors and retailers are in most cases much better informed about the quality of their products than consumers (Henson/Traill 1993). Often consumers are only at (prohibitively) high costs or not at all able to control important quality criterions such as food safety, nutritional value or region of origin. Such credence attributes can result in market failure due to a lack of credible information in the market (Akerlof 1970). As a result, attempts to protect consumers against food hazards, product adulteration and deception have gained much relevance in food supply chains (Deimel et al. 2008). Besides the more or less voluntary private...

Agrifood Certification Schemes in an Intercultural Context: Theoretical Reasoning and Empirical Findings AgEcon
Gawron, Jana-Christina; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
The need for adequate systems to guarantee the quality of food products has become more and more obvious in recent years. As a consequence, not only in Germany but throughout the world, the number of certification schemes has been increasing for nearly a decade. Due to the implementation of these standards in various countries, a considerable number of contingency factors exist that may influence the effectiveness and efficiency of such schemes. These factors include the diverse political, economic and social conditions in the different countries. Numerous studies attribute a decisive role in the successful implementation of management instruments to cultural influences. Cultural conditions may differ considerably from region to region around the world....

Akzeptanz von Informationssystemen durch Schweinemäster: Eine Kausalanalyse AgEcon
Arens, Ludwig; Plumeyer, Cord-Herwig; Theuvsen, Ludwig.

Corporate Social Responsibility in Agribusiness: Empirical Findings from Germany AgEcon
Heyder, Matthias; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
The social responsibility of businesses has developed into a highly debated issue in recent years. Especially in agribusiness, recent scandals as well as information asymmetries concerning food production have led to high external pressure on firms from the wider public. Being confronted with a variety of stakeholder goals and relationships, it could be particularly advantageous for enterprises in agribusiness to pursue a corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy. Based on a literature review, we introduce a conceptual framework that provides insights into the determinants of CSR and its effects, in particular, on the legitimacy and reputation, and finally, the performance of enterprises in agribusiness. This contingency-theoretic approach allows a...

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN THE AGRIBUSINESS: A RESEARCH FRAMEWORK AgEcon
Heyder, Matthias; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
In this paper we analyze the relevance of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy for enterprises in the agribusiness. Based on an overview about existing approaches to cope with conflicts in the agribusiness, we define CSR and introduce a conceptual framework that provides insights into the determinants of CSR and its effects. These are in particular, the legitimacy and reputation, and finally, the performance of enterprises in the agribusiness. Being mutually confronted with multiple stakeholder goals and relationships, it could be notably promising for enterprises in the agribusiness to pursue a CSR strategy.

Costs of Processing Genetically Modified Organisms: Analysis of the Rapeseed and Corn Industries AgEcon
Gawron, Jana-Christina; Theuvsen, Ludwig.

Recke, Guido; Theuvsen, Ludwig; Venhaus, Nadine; Voss, Anja.

Gawron, Jana-Christina; Theuvsen, Ludwig.

Battermann, Henning W.; Steinmann, Horst-Henning; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
Due to new legislation, contractual commitments and societal demands, the need to document production processes has been growing continuously for farmers. This is particularly so with regard to plant protection. In this study, we surveyed how 581 farmers from Lower Saxony meet the documentation requirements. Almost all farmers surveyed document their plant production including plant protection measures. The most striking differences can be observed with regard to documentation technologies and investments made. Factor and cluster analyses allowed the identification four groups of farmers with different motivations and attitudes towards existing documentation requirements.

Farmers' strategies in globalization markets: Empirical results from Germany AgEcon
Inderhees, Philipp; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
Today the European agrofood sector is increasingly confronted with the threats as well as the opportunities of liberalizing markets. Therefore, competitiveness on global markets is becoming of paramount importance for European farmers. The challenges of global markets are accompanied by a growing array of new developments in farmers' economic and political environments, such as accelerating structural changes in the farm and agribusiness sectors, a new EU agricultural policy (decoupling and cross- compliance) and new market opportunities due to the breakthrough of renewable energies. In this paper we deal with strategic decision- making by German farmers who are confronted with new threats and opportunities. We develop a theoretical framework of strategic...

Food Chain Actors’ Perceptions of and Adaptations to Volatile Markets: Results of a Media Analysis AgEcon
von Davier, Zazie; Heyder, Matthias; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
The volatility of agricultural markets has increased remarkably in recent years. In spite of this, the way in which supply chain actors perceive market volatility has only rarely been analyzed. This paper seeks to close this research gap by presenting empirical findings about how the volatility of agricultural markets is perceived, how increasing market volatilities are being explained, and what adaptations to the volatile external environments are being suggested. Based on a large‐scale media analysis, we have identified perceptions, which vary greatly over time, especially with regard to the perception of the threats and opportunities volatility creates for farms and firms and the most frequently identified reasons for volatile prices.

Heterogeneity in the Evaluation of Quality Assurance Systems: The International Food Standard (IFS) in European Agribusiness AgEcon
Schulze, Holger; Albersmeier, Friederike; Gawron, Jana-Christina; Spiller, Achim; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
Due to the growing demands of customers and several food crises, quality assurance schemes have become increasingly popular in agribusiness. With this trend in mind, it seems worthwhile to take a closer look at the satisfaction of participating European companies. The study focuses on the IFS, which has gained much relevance in the food industry. A questionnaire concerned with perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of the IFS was answered by 389 companies. The results indicate that the overall evaluation of the IFS is primarily affected by the perceived usefulness of the catalogue of requirements and its evaluation. Furthermore, a cluster analysis was conducted and three clusters were identified, representing heterogeneous evaluations of the IFS.

INNOVATIONSVERHALTEN IN DER DEUTSCHEN LANDWIRTSCHAFT – EMPIRISCHE ERGEBNISSE AM BEISPIEL DER BIOGASPRODUKTION AgEcon
Voss, Julian; Schaper, Christian; Spiller, Achim; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
