Feet lesions and lameness prevalence in dairy cows kept in permanent confinement (free-stall and tie-stall) MV&Z
Nicoletti, José Luiz de Mello; Souza, Francisco Armando de Azevedo; Thomassian, Armen; Hussni, Carlos Alberto; Alves, Ana Liz Garcia.
Feet lesions and lameness prevalence were studied in Holstein dairy cows housed in free-stall and tie-stall systems in São Paulo state farms. In the free-stall system, digital dermatitis, flat sole and axial erosion were the prevailing lesions. However, in the tie-stall system the following lesions predominated: sole bleeding, white line disease, heel erosion, double sole, interdigital dermatitis, hoof cracks and long toellow heel. In both management systems a positive correlation was found between feet lesions and the number of parturitions. The cows' age and the number of parturitions in addition to the management system influenced feet lesions in dairy cows..

Laminitis pathophysiology and treatment in horses MV&Z
Thomassian, Armen; Nicoletti, José Luiz de Mello; Hussni, Carlos Alberto; Alves, Ana Liz Garcia.
A severe affection of the locomotor system in horses, laminitis has several aspects discussed in this article, as anatomy, pathophysiology, clinical signs of acute and chronic stages, as well as major procedures used in treatment. Modem surgical procedures for management of the more severe clinical cases or refractory to conservative procedures are also presented.

Milling of the distal phalanx as treatment for osteitis in a water buffalo: case report MV&Z
Hussni, Carlos Alberto; Veronesi, Regina de Cássia; Alves, Ana Liz Garcia; Nicoletti, José Luiz de Mello; Thomassian, Armen; Vulcano, Luiz Carlos.
This report describes the surgical treatment of distal phalanx septic osteitis in a seven-month old buffalo. The animal was presented with severe support lameness of the left forelimb, a suppurate fistula on the heel of the lateral claw, increased volume and temperature in the affected area which was painful at manipulation. The radiographic examination revealed osteolysis in the distal lateral phalanx of the limbo Surgery became necessary as treatment with penicillin and sulfa did not bring satisfactory results. Milling of the affected phalanx was performed after the animal received a tranquilizer and regional anesthesia, and was placed in lateral decubitus. A boring miller and an angle cutter were used to drill the sole and remove the affected bone...

Reestablishment of equine intestinal transit. Part II: Treatment MV&Z
Thomassian, Armen.
Reestablishment of the normal intestinal transit in horses with sharp abdominal discomfort has been a major challenge even for the most experienced professionals in equine practice and surgery. Major procedures to control and repair gastrointestinal motility demand periodic observation of physiological parameters, intravenous administration of fluids to control hypoperfusion and electrolyte balance and digestive decompression by nasogastric intubation and cecum puncture. These emergency procedures are adopted whatever the etiopathogeny of the colic. Besides the traditional procedures, the veterinarian can also use acupuncture or even surgical intervention in situations where no responses were obtained by using the conservative therapy or when the case...

Repair of experimentally induced perforating bone lesions in the distal phalanx of normal horses MV&Z
Ribeiro, Max Gimenez; Nicoletti, José Luiz de Mello; Thomassian, Armen; Hussni, Carlos Alberto; Alves, Ana Liz Garcia.
The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical, radiological and anatomopathological evolution of experimentally induced bone perforating lesions in the distal phalanx of normal horses. Eight adult horses of both sexes totally free of feet disorders were used in the trial. Lesions were produced through the sole of the distal phalanx, using a miller and an electric drill. Results demonstrated that the technique used allowed a complete and precise approach to the pedal bone; lesions were repaired without any impairment to locomotion. This technique may be an alternative for the usual bone curettage of septic pedal osteitis, keratoma, distal phalangeal fracture and sequestration and draining of foot abscess.
