A co-viability model of grazing and bird community management in farmland Inra

In European grasslands, livestock grazing is a key driver of habitat quality. However, the specific grazing regimes that favour habitat quality and ensure biodiversity conservation remain largely unknown. This paper develops a dynamic model to predict how livestock grazing may be used to sustain a bird community without penalizing cattle feeding. The model focuses on a grassland grazed by cattle which is also the breeding habitat of three wader species. It integrates the dynamics of a sward, controlled through grazing, and that of three bird populations. Finding ways of increasing the efficiency of production systems is a key issue of sustainability. System efficiency is based on long-termindividual efficiency, which is highly variable and management driven. To study the effects of management on herd and individualefficiency, we developed the model simulation of goat herd management (SIGHMA). Concilier à long terme performance productive et écologique: un modèle de co-viabilité pâturage - oiseaux prairiaux en marais Inra

Les modes de gestion des prairies sont reconnus comme les moteurs essentiels de la qualité des habitats et donc du devenir d’un grand nombre d’espèces animales et végétales des agroécosystèmes prairiaux européens. A ce jour,les recherches ont surtout abordé les impacts à court terme de ces modes de gestion.L’UMR SADAPT propose un modèle dynamique prédisant les stratégies de pâturage qui concilient à long terme production fourragère et conservation de l’avifaune dans les prairies de marais. Ce modèle est appliqué à deux petits échassiers limicoles, le Vanneau Huppé et le Chevalier Gambette, dont les cycles de vie sont liés aux modes de gestion des prairies.

Field occupancy by breeding lapwings Vanellus vanellus and redshanks Tringa totanus in agricultural wet grasslands Inra

This study is based on a comparative approach to explore how two breeding waders, the lapwing Vanellus vanellus and the redshank Tringa tetanus, respond to cattle grazing in terms of timing and intensity of grazing in the Marais Poitevin (French Atlantic coast). Generalised linear mixed models (GLMM) showed that the two main predictors determining suitable grasslands were sward structure (i.e. mean sward height and tussock frequency) and water surface. A grazing index (LU.days/ha) was then monitored to tackle the extent to which the occupancy of fields by waders depended upon the grazing management involved in previous autumn, as well as in spring (early and mid-spring grazing). Management of agricultural wet grasslands for breeding waders: integrating ecological and livestock system perspectives. A review Inra

Although agriculture is pointed to as being one of the major causes of biodiversity loss, it is now recognised that some farming practices, grazing in particular, represent central issues in the on-running debate on wildlife conservation. This paper analyses the relationship between agricultural pasture management and bird preservation, by focusing on the illustrative case study of breeding waders in wet grasslands. In arid regions, agropastoralists must anticipate losses caused by drought. Herd-management practices, crop diversification, and the relative importance given to both types of production are the most important strategies. In Andean agriculture, risks exist not only for agriculture but for food availability and commerce. In European grasslands, grazing and mowing regimes are major drivers of the maintenance of many wild species, either through direct or indirect effects. To date, both types of effects were studied separately, mainly at the field scale and with no quantification of performance. Objective of this study was to model the trade-offs between ecological and productive performance of a grassland agro-ecosystem at two nested scales i.e. field and farm scales.
