Pinus pinaster is the main industrial conifer in South-western Europe, especially France. Advanced forestry and conventional genetic breeding for 50 years resulted in a 3-fold increase in wood productivity. Up to 15% increase in growth and straightness were effective with first-generation varieties but genetic redundancy is expected to lower forthcoming genetic gain. Maximizing genetic gain for historical and new selection criteria remains challenging owing to long generation time of Maritime pine and low ability for conventional clonal propagation. During 2002–2004, three laboratories inCanada and France collaborated to improve initiation of somatic embryogenesis (SE) in jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), eastern white pine (P. strobus L.), maritime pine (P. pinaster Ait.), and Scots pine (P. sylvestris L.), giving particular attention to theeffects of (1)-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N'-phenylurea(CPPU) versus various concentrations of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and benzyladenine (BA), (2) differences in basal nutrient media, i.e., macro- and microelements, and (3) gelling agentconcentration. Advances in conifer biotechnology offer new opportunities in the field of vegetative propagation and geneticengineering. Development of clonal propagation methods, especially somatic embryogenesis (SE), has numerous potentialapplications. Owing to its efficiency in plant regeneration, coupled with the ease of long-term storage in liquid nitrogen, SEbecame an indispensable tool for accelerating the development of tree varieties and deployment. Maritime pine contributes for a leading part in socio-economic development of the French Aquitania region. Sudden and drastic changes in market value and environmental constraints in recent years would need a significant paradigm shift in current breeding technology to deliver suitable varieties. Field comparison of vegetative propagules is a key towards individual selection and efficient capture of thebest genetic stocks.
