Abstract: The use of B-mode and color Doppler ultrasonography may replace the use of surgical methods (laparoscopy or laparotomy) in the evaluation of the superovulatory response in sheep, with an accuracy around 74% and 82%, respectively (Oliveira et al. 2018. The ultrasound determination of ovarian response in embryo donor goats still needs to be proven, especially because the non-invasive technique is mandatory when the embryo collection is done by transcervical route. Abstract: In goats, it has been demonstrated that cervical mucus evaluation is able to predict the time of ovulation after estrous hormonal synchronization, which is efficient in determining the ideal time of Artificial Insemination (Fonseca et al., 2017. Reprod Biol; 17:363-369). However, in sheep, this parameter is not established in the literature. The study was conducted in Coronel Pacheco (latitude 21?33 'S and longitude 43?16' W), MG, Brazil. These data are different from that reported in goats, i.e., the standardization of mucus score 3 or 4 at the time of ovulation. Correlations between biometrics parameteres and vascularization of corpora lutea and serum progesterone concentration in superovulated sheep. Repositório Alice

In vivo embryo production performs an important role in small ruminants, however the efficiency of this biotechnology has high variability. In this context, the occurrence of luteal dysfunction is exacerbated in superovulated females (Rodriguez et al., 2015) and it is an unwanted response wich may be related to low embryo production. Thus, it is possible to highlight the need to expand knowledge related to the corpora lutea functionality, as well as determinative tools for ultrasound diagnosis. The aim of this study was to test correlations between biometric variables, luteal vascularization and serum progesterone concentrations. In conclusion, luteal vascularization is an indicative of corpus luteum functionality in superovulated ewes.

The aim was evaluated the breed effect on superovulatory responses and embryo yields in Brazilian native ewes submitted to a mid-term progesterone-based protocol and gonadotrophic treatment with 133 mg of pFSH. The study was conducted in the northeast of Brazil in ewes of three breeds: Morada Nova (MN; n=10); Santa Inês (SI; n=10) and Somalis (SO; n=10).

Abstract: The compatibility between the embryo development stage and the estrous cycle moment of the embryo recipient is an important factor in the multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) program. This aspect contributes significantly to the pregnancy establishment. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of estrus synchronization and superovulation protocol on the distribution of ovine embryos at different stages of development. Abstract: The Doppler ultrasonography allows the characterization of blood flow and estimation of the functionality of reproductive organs. Therefore, it shows a great potential for use in multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) programs in ruminants. For the success of an embryo transfer program, it is necessary to achieve a great synchronization between the embryo donor and recipients. For this, hormonal protocols are commonly used, aiming at a greater number and quality of the viable products, in a shorter period of time. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the hormonal protocol of estrus synchronization and superovulation in goats on the quality and stage of embryos obtained. In conclusion, the hormonal protocol used for superovulation of goats was effective enough to guarantee embryos in adequate stages and quality for fresh embryo transfer and cryopreservation, avoiding both undesired very young and hatched embryos. This study was designed to assess the effects of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration 7.5 days after the end of synchronous estrus induction protocol in Morada Nova ewes in the non?breeding season on biometrics and vascularization of the luteal tissue, progesterone (P4) concentrations and reproductive performance. Morada Nova ewes (n=113) were submitted to synchronous estrus induction, during October and November, with 60 mg medroxyprogesterone intravaginal sponge for sex days plus 200 IU of eCG i.m. and 30 ?g of d?cloprostenol i.m. 36 h before sponge removal.

Abstract: The variability of superovulatory responses is still a limiting factor for the consolidation of commercial embryo transfer programs in small ruminants (Bartlewski et al. 2016. Theriogenology, 86: 130-143). Superovulation protocols are traditionally performed with prior use of progesterone devices for short- or long-term duration (Oliveira et al. 2014. Anim Reprod Sci, 144: 30-37) associated exogenous FSH administration. The use of color Doppler ultrasonography in multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) protocols for sheep allows the real?time monitoring of ovarian blood flow and potentially can be a tool to predict embryo production in sheep. Therefore, the present study tested the correlation of ovarian vascularization at 36 h after the end of the superovulation treatment and at 12h (Day 15) before the non?surgical embryo recovery (NSER) (Day 16) with estrus response (ER%), duration of estrus (DE), number of corpus luteum (CL), number of anovulatory follicles (AF), number of structures recovered (SR), number of viable embryos (VE; Grade 1-3).

Abstract: The in vivo production of embryos is used to accelerate the multiplication of the herds, but the efficiency of this biotechnology is widely variable in small ruminants. The variability of the superovulatory responses and the production of viable embryos has been related to several factors, including the dose of gonadotrophin used in the hormonal treatment of superovulation, and the occurrence of prematurely regressing corpora lutea. Abstract: Multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) is a reproductive biotechnique that allows accelerated genetic improvement of the species. In ruminants, the variability of the superovulatory response is a limiting factor for MOET programs. In addition, specifically in sheep, it is difficult to conduct embryo recovery by transcervical via, due to the anatomy of the cervical canal. The dose of 100 mg pFSH appeared to be not sufficient to reach a high superovulation response while 200 mg resulted in good superovulatory response. Abstract: Transcervical transposition in sheep cannot be achieved without any cervical relaxation drug (Gusmão et al., 2007, RevBrasSaúdeProdAn, 8:1-10). The first step testing the viability of cervical relaxation protocol for transcervical embryo transfer in sheep is to check the effect of these drugs on pregnancy. Although combination of estradiol benzoate and oxytocin did not compromise pregnancy establishment, no attempts of cervical transposition was reported in sheep (Lewis, 2010. SheepGoatResJ, 25:21-25). Abstract: Despite the importance of Morada Nova for Northeast sheep production systems, information about embryo production of this breed is scarce with only one report of multiple ovulation and surgical embryo recovery (Brasil et al., 2016. ArqBrasMedVetZootec, 68:1390-1394) and non-surgical uterine access (Fonseca et al., 2016. Theriogenology, 86:144-151). In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of different superovulation protocols in pluriparous Morada Nova using nonsurgical embryo recovery (NSER) to access embryo production. The study was performed to evaluate whether the use of hCG 7 days after synchronized oestrus in Morada Nova ewes would increase the number and size of corpora lutea. In conclusion, 300 IU of hCG injected 7 days after synchronized oestrus is effective to increase the number of corpora lutea and in the size of luteal tissue. Despite indications of a favourable effect on luteal dynamics, the effects on progesterone production and conception rate need to be examined.
