Animal Health and Welfare during transition to organic dairy production: problems, priorities and perspectives Organic Eprints
Vaarst, M.; Alban, L.; Mogensen, L; Thamsborg, S.M.; Kristensen, E.S..
During the past few years, organic dairy farming has grown dramatically in Denmark. Consequently, an increasing number of people are encountering this method of production for the first time. Amongst these, many veterinarians have suddenly had to deal with organic herds in their home district, and, meeting examples of poor animal welfare, they have recently started to express some concerns. Against this background, a so-called “Synthesis of Knowledge” project was initiated to examine the health and welfare of dairy cattle and the use of medication in the transition to organic production. The aim of the project was to investigate associated problems from the point of view of the dairy herd. Based on qualitative research interviews with vets and...

Coccidiose hos kvæg: En oversigt over coccidiearter, patogenese, epidemiologi og forebyggelse specielt i økologiske besætninger Organic Eprints
Vaarst, M.; Ingvartsen, K.L.; Vestergaard, E.M.; Maddox-Hyttel, C..

Combining Ethological Thinking and Epidemiological Knowledge to Enhance the Naturalness of Organic Livestock Systems Organic Eprints
Vaarst, M.; Roderick, S.; Lund, V.; Lockeretz, W..
Organic livestock farming places strong emphasis on conditions that allow animals to exhibit behavioural needs. This involves the provision of a natural environment and, in particular, outdoor conditions and a reliance on natural forages. Such environments also allow animals to be effectively integrated into crop production. However, there are potential disease risks associated with these conditions, with control options being partly limited by restrictions on chemoprophylactic measures. Examples from dairy and poultry production demonstrate how a basic understanding of ethology and a knowledge of disease epidemiology can enhance the welfare of animals whilst satisfying the ecological objectives of organic farming. Existing epidemiological models and...

Contributions to variability of Clinical Measures for use as Indicators of Udder Health Status in a Clinical Protocol Organic Eprints
Fossing, C.; Vaarst, M.; Houe, H.; Enevoldsen, C..
A cross-sectional observational study with repeated observations was conducted on 16 Danish dairy farms to quantify the influence of observer, parity, time (stage in lactation) and farm on variables routinely selected for inclusion in clinical protocols, thereby to enable a more valid comparison of udder health between different herds. During 12 months, participating herds were visited 5 times by project technicians, who examined 20 cows and scored the selected clinical variables. The estimates of effect on variables were derived from a random regression model procedure. Statistical analyses revealed that, although estimates for occurrence of several the variables, e.g. degree of oedema, varied significantly between observers, the effects on many of these...

Danish Stable Schools for Experiential Common Learning in Groups of Organic Dairy Farmers Organic Eprints
Vaarst, M.; Nissen, T.B.; Østergaard, S.; Klaas, I.C.; Bennedsgaard, T.W.; Christensen, J..
The farmer field school (FFS) is a concept for farmers’ learning, knowledge exchange, and empowerment that has been developed and used in developing countries. In Denmark, a research project focusing on explicit nonantibiotic strategies involves farmers who have actively expressed an interest in phasing out antibiotics from their herds through promotion of animal health. One way of reaching this goal was to form participatory focused farmer groups in an FFS approach, which was adapted to Danish conditions and named “stable schools.” Four stable schools were established and went through a 1-yr cycle with 2 visits at each of the 5 or 6 farms connected to each group. A facilitator was connected to each group whose role was to write the meeting agenda together...

Development and Daily Management of an Explicit Strategy of Nonuse of Antimicrobial Drugs in Twelve Danish Organic Dairy Herds Organic Eprints
Vaarst, M.; Bennedsgaard, T.W.; Klaas, I.C.; Nissen, T.B.; Thamsborg, S.M.; Østergaard, S..
Promotion of animal health and well-being at the individual animal and herd level is an important goal in organic farming. At the same time, chemical products affecting the natural balance among living organisms are prohibited in all areas of the organic farm. From an animal welfare point of view, however, no animal must suffer. Therefore, veterinary drugs are allowed under the European Union’s regulations for organic farming, despite the fact that they are powerful cell toxins affecting both pathogenic and necessary bacteria, and as such in organic terminology, are regarded as “chemical” or “artificial” products. In this article, we present and discuss interviews with 12 Danish organic dairy producers who claim that minimized use or nonuse of...

Development of animal health and welfare planning in organic dairy farming in Europe Organic Eprints
Vaarst, M.; Leeb, C.; Nicholas, P.; Roderick, S.; Smoulders, G.; Walkenhorst, M.; Brinkman, J.; March, S.; Ströger, E.; Gratzer, E.; Winckler, C.; Lund, V.; Henriksen, B.I.F.; Hansen, B.; Neale, M.; Whistance, L.K..
Good animal health and welfare is an explicit goal of organic livestock farming, and will need continuous development and adjustment on the farms. Furthermore, the very different conditions in different regions of Europe calls for models that can be integrated into local practice and be relevant for each type of farming context. A European project with participants from seven countries have been established with the aim of developing principles for animal health and welfare planning in organic dairy farming, based on a process where knowledge about the status within a given herd will be included as background for taking decisions and planning future improvements. An important part of the planning process is communication with other farmers as well as...

Dilemma og synergi i økologisk husdyrhold: Dyrevelfærd, naturlighed og fødevaresikkerhed Organic Eprints
Vaarst, M..

Effects of health and welfare planning on the use of antibiotics and udder health in European dairy farms Organic Eprints
Ivemeyer, S.; Smolders, G.; Brinkmann, J.; Gratzer, E.; Hansen, B.; Henriksen, B.I.F.; Huber, J.; Leeb, C.; March, S.; Mejdell, C.M.; Roderick, S.; Stöger, E.; Vaarst, M.; Whitstance, L.K.; Winckler, C.; Walkenhorst, M..
To improve the sustainability of dairy production it is essential to establish practices that reduce medicine use whilst safeguarding or improving herd health and productivity. Aiming at minimising medicine use through animal health and welfare planning (AHWP), 111farms in 6 countries were monitored as part of the wide CORE Organic lic ANIPLAN project. For this purpose, the number of udder treatments with antibiotics was recorded. Somatic cell score (SCS) served as an indicator of udder health, and milk yield and average Iactation number were calculated at the farm Ievel from milk recording data. Treatment and milk recording data were collected for a one year period before and after a first farm visit. AHWP was carried out either in stable schools or...

Impact of animal health and welfare planning on medicine use, herd health and production in European organic dairy farms Organic Eprints
Ivemeyer, Silvia; Smolders, G.; Brinkmann, J.; Gratzer, E.; Hansen, B.; Henriksen, Britt I. F.; Huber, J.; Leeb, C.; March, S.; Mejdell, C.; Nicholas, P; Roderick, S; Stöger, E.; Vaarst, M.; Whistance, L.K.; Winckler, C.; Walkenhorst, Dr. Michael.
A reduction of medicine use (udder treatments, metabolic treatments and total number of treatments) in organic dairy herds was achieved within a time period of one year under different conditions across seven European countries. At the same time an improvement of udder health (SCS) and a stable situation in other health areas (metabolic disorders, fertility) was found, however regardless of the focus area in the AHWP. The AHWP process which was implemented on the farms may therefore be regarded a feasible approach to minimise medicine use without impairment of health, longevity and productivity under most European organic dairy farming conditions. However, further long-term studies are necessary to investigate effects of specific advice included in herd...

Indian farmers' experience and perceptions of organic farming Organic Eprints
Panneerselvam, P.; Halberg, N.; Vaarst, M.; Hermansen, J.E..
In India, the number of farmers converting to organic farming has increased in the recent past despite the lack of government support in providing knowledge and extension to the farmers. The aim of this article is to investigate the perceived relevance, benefits and barriers to a conversion to organic agriculture in three different Indian contexts - in Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand states. In each state, 40 farmers from both organic and conventional systems were interviewed. The findings indicated that conventional producers identified production and marketing barriers as the main constraints to adopting organic farming, while the age and education of the farmer were not deemed a problem. Lack of knowledge and lack of institutional support...

Lavt forbrug af antibiotika i økologiske malkekvægsbesætninger Organic Eprints
Vaarst, M.; Bennedsgaard, T.W..

Minimising medicine use in organic dairy herds through animal health and welfare planning Organic Eprints
Vaarst, M.; Brinkmann, J.; Gratzer, E.; Jansen, B.; Henriksen, B.I.F.; Huber, J.; Ivemeyer, S.; Leeb, C.; March, S.; Mejdell, C.; Neale, M.; Nicholas, P.; Roderik, S.; Rogerson, I.; Smolders, G.; Stöger, E.; Walkenhorst, M.; Whistance, L.K.; Winckler, C..
Livestock is important in many organic farming systems, and it is an explicit goal to ensure high levels of animal health and welfare (AHW) through good management. This will lead to reduced medicine use and better quality of animal products. In two EU network projects NAHWOA & SAFO it was concluded that this is not guaranteed merely by following organic standards. Both networks recommended implementation of individual animal health plans to stimulate organic farmers to improve AHW. These plans should include a systematic evaluation of AHW and be implemented through dialogue with each farmer in order to identify goals and plan improvements. 15 research institutions in 8 European countries are involved in the proposed project with the main objective to...

Monitoring recovery after clinical mastitis in dairy cows after 2 different types of treatment Organic Eprints
Fossing, C.; Vaarst, M.; Ersbøll, A.K.; Thamsborg, S..
A prospective observational study, split over two periods, was set up to describe initial symptom patterns and convalescence progression of treated clinical cases of mastitis on 29 Danish dairy farms. In the first study period all cows were treated with antibiotics (group A); in the second study period cows were treated with classical homeopathy (group B1) or antibiotics (group B2). Initial symptom and treatment patterns were examined by factor analyses. The 1st analysis included all clinical observations made on treatment day. The difference between the 3 groups in mean scores for revealed factors was tested by Students t-test. The 2nd and 3rd analyses were performed separately for groups A and B1 and included all variables measured. Differences between...

Reducing use of antimicrobials — Experiences from an intervention study in organic dairy herds in Denmark Organic Eprints
Bennedsgaard, Torben Werner; Klaas, I.C.; Vaarst, M..
With the aim of phasing out the use of antimicrobials 23 Danish organic dairy producers from the same organic dairy company participated in Stable School farmer groups from February 2004 to March 2005 in order to go through a common learning and development process towards their common goal. Data on production and herd health were evaluated from two years before to three years after the start of the Stable Schools. For comparison, data was collected from the remaining 35 herds delivering to the same dairy company, 118 organic dairy herds delivering to other dairies and 115 conventional herds. On average, the project herds were smaller with lower production and had half the incidence rate of mastitis treatment than the organic herds from other dairies...

Sundhed og velfærd i kalveholdet Organic Eprints
Vaarst, M.; Maddox-Hyttel, C.; Thamsborg, S. M.; Bennedsgaard, T.W.; Vestergaard, E.M.; Fossing, C.; Ingvartsen, K.L..
